WASHINGTON, (AFP) - White House hopefuls Barack Obama and John McCain are in a virtual tie in five battleground states, but nationally McCain's convention bounce has dissolved, giving Obama a 48 to 43 percent lead, according to polls released Wednesday. ADVERTISEMENT
Nationally, Obama has retaken the lead, according to a CBS News/New York Times poll that last week, in the wake of the Republican National Convention, saw McCain leading by two percentage points Source.

That an empty suit might have some perceived lead is hardly good news unless you're a Kool-Aid Drinker.

I watch this every day, Burns.... it swings a few points to either side and back again. New York times article today said they fear McCain/Palin won't be a real change from what we have now.

If Obama is not up by 5-6 points before the election he is a dead loser. Polls have underestimated Republican votes in the Presidential election by 6-7 points for years.
Combine that with the "racial" factor and I would say that Palin/McCain are clearly in the driver seat.

If Obama is not up by 5-6 points before the election he is a dead loser. Polls have underestimated Republican votes in the Presidential election by 6-7 points for years. Normally, I would agree with you on this, but Obama consistently did better in the primaries, than polling data would suggest. Many of his supporters are younger Americans, who only have cell phones. Polling calls are not made to cell phones, thus his numbers have tended to be somewhat under, rather than over stated.
Then again, the popular vote means nothing. What matters is the electoral college. Obama has to carry states, that Kerry lost. In the democratic primaries, Hillary tended to run much stronger in those states, than did Obama. As such, I think that while he may win the popular vote, he may well lose the election. Then again, Hillary won the popular vote in the Democratic primaries. Isn't that a bit ironic?

GH - are you serious? DO you think that they are Democrats too? You OK there?
say yes, the same was said for Kerry. Fact is that many of the youngsters do not show up.
Again, the race factor is worth 3-4 points in a nationwide election. Remember, it is not a factor in primaries.

Based on what I saw sitting on committee, and during caucus, I have to repectfully disagree.
The younger voters are pretty pumped HERE about the election...

They were pumped up for Kerry too. There was a war -remember??
Remember the rock concerts?
Young voters notoriously stay home. Time will tell.

it swings a few points to either side and back again.
Which is why I also believe..
It dont mean a thing till the votes are counted
Then again, the popular vote means nothing. What matters is the electoral college. While Obama is doing far better with the electorial vote than I thought he would, I am not confident he will win them out. If he does, it will be by the skin of his teeth.
I believe he will have the popular vote hands down. Lets just hope, with Bush supporting Mc Cain, that we don't have repeat of eight years ago and the "problem" with the polls.

It already started...
Ohio Sues Over Missing Electronic Votes August 09 06
"The Columbus Post Dispatch reports that the State of Ohio is suing Premier Election Systems (previously known as Diebold) over malfunctions in electronic voting machines. Election workers found that votes were 'dropped' in at least 11 counties when memory cards were uploaded to computer servers. The same voting machines are used nationwide. The company blames a conflict between their software and antivirus software for the problem and says that an advisory was issued on the subject. The Ohio lawsuit contends that the company made false representations and failed to live up to contractual obligations and seeks punitive damages."Read more of this story at Slashdot.

Obama gains a bigger lead cbs
I agree with Makya-this one is close, and it will likely change again and again. The Early Show crew stated that Palin got the shock value, is fresh and new, but now things will level off to watching both sides.

This is what I don't like, these polls. When all the votes are cast, then we will know.

Yes, hopefully this time, the ballots in florida won't be designed by a bunch of Democrats that could not be understood by their voters.
