Most Popular
The wipeout in the 2006 election left Republicans in such a state of dejection that they've overlooked the one shining victory in which a Republican star was born. The triumph came in Alaska where Sarah Palin, a politician of eye-popping integrity, was elected governor. She is now the most popular governor in America, with an approval rating in the 90s, and probably the most popular public official in any state.
Her rise is a great (and rare) story of how adherence to principle--especially to transparency and accountability in government--can produce political success. And by the way, Palin is a conservative who only last month vetoed 13 percent of the state's proposed budget for capital projects. The cuts, the Anchorage Daily News said, "may be the biggest single-year line-item veto total in state history."
As recently as last year, Palin (pronounced pale-in) was a political outcast. She resigned in January 2004 as head of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission after complaining to the office of Governor Frank Murkowski and to state Attorney General Gregg Renkes about ethical violations by another commissioner, Randy Ruedrich, who was also Republican state chairman.
State law barred Palin from speaking out publicly about ethical violations and corruption. But she was vindicated later in 2004 when Ruedrich, who'd been reconfirmed as state chairman, agreed to pay a $12,000 fine for breaking state ethics laws. She became a hero in the eyes of the public and the press, and the bane of Republican leaders.

Alaska's governor tops the approval rating charts (Palin is VERY popular)
Sarah Again!
JUNEAU -- With the latest poll showing her approval rating at 89 percent, Gov. Sarah Palin may now be the most popular governor in the nation.
A recent public opinion poll taken by Ivan Moore Research showed both Republicans and Democrats in favor of the state's first female governor. The poll comes just two weeks after a separate poll taken by Dittman Research gave Palin a 93 percent approval rating.
While political polling numbers can fluctuate week to week, Palin's numbers have consistently been extremely high, putting her near or at the top among the nation's governors, according to Jennifer Duffy, an analyst at the Cook Political Report, a Washington, D.C.-based research group that closely follows state politics.
"She is only the 14th person in the nation to take out an incumbent governor in a primary. That's about the hardest thing you can do in politics, so she was starting from a good point," Duffy said.
Palin beat then-Gov. Frank Murkowski in last August's Republican primary before winning the general election in November.
"In a lot of ways that was the race, so she started in a good position," Duffy said.
The Ivan Moore poll surveyed 500 people throughout the state on the governor's performance as well as her Alaska Gasline Inducement Act. Fifty percent of those asked said they thought Palin's gas line law would increase the chances of a North Slope pipeline getting built to transport natural gas to the Lower 48. Twenty-one percent of respondents said the gas line law was flawed.
Only 5 percent of those asked said they thought negatively about Palin's work in her six months as governor

Love this one, LOL.
Her job approval rating is astoundingly high with an 86% overall approval rating and 63% strongly approving of her job performance. Independents approve by a margin of 86% - 10% and there is absolutely no gender gap. 97% of Republicans approve of the job she is doing as do 75% of Democrats. She receives high job approval ratings across all regions of Alaska.
59% of Alaska voters say she is AS or MORE qualified as Barack Obama. 30% state she is more qualified than Obama, 31% that she is less qualified and 29% that she is just as qualified as the Democratic nominee. Article

While they may not have enjoyed an 80% approval rating, let's not forget Ted Kennedy and Ted Stevens obviously had greater than 50% approval ratings from their constituencies.
SurveyUSA reports Kennedy's job approval rating at 63% as of 2007-11-20. The average approval rating among senators in states surveyed is 53%. See their survey details for more information. http://http://www.govtrack.us/congress/person.xpd?id=300059
In mid-July 2007, Stevens' approval rating, according to a poll conducted by Ivan Moore, dropped to just under 45%, while 44% of respondents stated a favorable opinion of the Senator. Previous approval ratings, between September 2005 and April 2007, ranged from 58 percent to 63 percent, demonstrating a significant change since Stevens came under investigation. http://www.culturekitchen.com/mole333/blog/alaska_senator_ted_stevens_indicted So, is there actually a point to how well liked she is in Alaska? It's not like Stevens was less of a crook when he enjoyed a 63% approval rating. Hell, shrub's approval ratings were 90% in the days immediately following 9/11.Let's see if Palin hangs onto that 80% approval rating for 7 years, or if she drops into the 30% range too.

I don't have your crystal ball...I go by one's record and hard facts.
Wonder what the folks in Illinois would rate Obama at right about now for the tremendous job he's done in the senate. Remember, the Senate has the lowest approval rating EVER.

Remember, the Senate has the lowest approval rating EVER. And that's because everybody hates everybody else's senator. The average approval rating among senators in states surveyed is 53%. See their survey details for more information. In any given election cycle, roughly 90% of incumbents get reelected, no matter how crappy things are going, as everyone with their heads in the sand insist that it's not the candidate THEY (were smart enough) to support who is the problem.

Nancy Pelosi and Reid have a 14% approval rating. Rush Limbaugh has a higher approval rating in Nevada than Reid.
Both of these crooks owned tons of stock in Lehman and Fannie Mae. Of course they - the LEADERS of the Congress have done nothing and will adjourn next week in the midst of this mess -after the least effective Congress in 100 years.
Let me see - 85 subtract 14 = hmmmmmmm

Back to facts... the numbers don't mean squat. If you actually believe what you write, why did you find it necessary to provide the approval rating for Chappaquiddick Ted?

Back to facts... the numbers don't mean squat. If you actually believe what you write, why did you find it necessary to provide the approval rating for Chappaquiddick Ted? It's called an "example," capo. For instance, YOU obviously think Kennedy's 63% approval rating doesn't mean squat. By showing a similar example which I think you would agree with in concept (Ted Kennedy's or Ted Stevens' approval ratings are meaningless in terms of what kind of person each is or how qualified he is to lead), you will see the overall concept that approval ratings have little to do with what kind of person an official is or how qualified they are to lead. It's a measure of how popular they are. Nothing more.

YOU obviously think Kennedy's 63% approval rating doesn't mean squat It doesn't. Maybe if he were consistently 80-93% like Sarah's is...it would be worthy of mention however
Guess the folks up in Alaska think she's a pretty darned good Governor...the numbers bear that out. Teddy's numbers certainly make him about average

It's a measure of how popular they are. And that is what decides elections in a democratic republic, in case you were unaware of this phenomenon.

Truth-O-Meter
If the limit of your interest on this issue is whether it’s true that Palin is an extremely popular governor in Alaska, we’ll save you some time: the answer is an unqualified yes.
But we wanted to find out if she is the most popular, as the McCain campaign said. That’s a more complicated — and ultimately squishy — issue.
You won’t find a poll that on one day asked a large sample of residents in every state to rate their governor.
What you have is a hodgepodge of polls taken on different days in different states, often asking people different versions of whether they like their governor. For example, you might have one poll asking simply whether they have a favorable or unfavorable opinion of the governor; and another that asks you to rate the guv’s performance as excellent, good, fair or poor. It’d be unfair to compare those head-to-head.
And not to make your head hurt, but there’s a difference between personal approval ratings and job approval ratings. Bill Clinton, for example, had high job approval ratings but low personal approval ratings.
So what do we know about Palin’s approval ratings among Alaskans? They are remarkably high.
A May 2007 poll taken by Ivan Moore Research in Alaska put Palin’s positive rating at 89 percent. That’s off the charts high. But Moore’s survey wasn’t a traditional approval rating or job performance measure. Rather, respondents were asked to rate their feelings toward public figures as very or somewhat positive or very or somewhat negative. The verys and somewhats were then combined.
A poll two weeks before that one, from Dittman Research, gave Palin a 93 percent approval rating.
The Moore poll numbers hit a low of 76 percent in mid July — in the midst of “Troopergate” coverage — but bounced back to 80 percent in mid August. That mirrored a Hays Research Group poll on July 24 and 25 in which 80 percent rated Palin’s performance as somewhat or very favorable.
Moore hasn’t polled similar questions in other states, so he wouldn’t say categorically that Palin’s are the highest in the country. “But it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know 89 percent is going to be at the top of the list,” Moore said.
On Sept. 3, the McCain campaign released results of an American Viewpoint poll on Sept. 2 — after the announcement of Palin as McCain’s running mate — that found Palin had an 86 percent overall job approval rating. That was a poll commissioned by the McCain campaign, so take that for what it’s worth.
Again, these are extraordinarily high numbers by any measure. But according to Rasmussen polls, Palin gave up her crown as “most popular” in July, overtaken by North Dakota’s Gov. John Hoeven.
A Rasmussen poll on July 30 found 64% of voters rate Palin’s job performance as excellent or good versus 14% who view it as poor. On July 8, Hoeven clocked 72 percent at excellent or good against just 6 percent who rated his performance as poor.
Scott Rasmussen, founder and CEO of Rasmussen Reports, said people shouldn’t get hung up on whether someone ranked No. 1 or 2. Those numbers change with the political winds of the day.
“In a broader sense, she (Palin) is one of the very top,” Rasmussen said.
The polling firm SurveyUSA has in the past conducted governor’s approval ratings in all 50 states, but not since Palin took office.
In 2006, the highest ratings were around 80 percent.
The ratings being reported in Alaska for Palin are “extraordinarily high,” said Jay Leve, editor of SurveyUSA. “Those kinds of numbers are unprecedented.”
And based on the previous highs for approval ratings, he said, it’s highly likely Palin is now top dog.
Jennifer Duffy, a senior editor for The Cook Political Report, and John McIntyre, managing editor at Real Clear Politics — two groups that pay close attention to such things — also believe Palin’s numbers rank her as the most popular.
“It’s difficult to make a categorical statement like that,” McIntyre said. “But generally, they are on pretty solid ground. If I was a betting person, I bet that’s an accurate statement. Once your approval rating is over 80 percent, it’s a little silly.”
Bottom line, most experts say the McCain campaign is probably right. We rate it True.

I agree... she has a high approval rating in alaska...
the population of which is mostly men..( do they all think she is too?? )
and...even so.... my only question is.... what does it matter here... she is not running for the governorship of the USA.. but she is running for VPOTUSA...( and if McCain should become incapacitated... she will become POTUSA...
I read wiki
~ here ~
and know i know everything there is to know about alaska...
it is a republican stronghold... it is rich.. and it wants to keep things the way they have been.. these are all the things that Sarah says that she wants to protect..
so.. my conclusion is... if you were living in alaska... why wouldn't you giver her a positive approval rating?
but...just what is the worst crisis that she has had to deal with while governor?
( thinking it was only- what shade of lipstick to use on the pig....... )

GH if you were living in alaska... why wouldn't you giver her a positive approval rating? Cause maybe there are other republicans to vote for?
As for worst crisis, to me, a crisis is a Texas sized meteorite headed towards the earth. A looming recession is an inconvenience requiring adjustments in my life so I suppose, anybody that has their shit together and doesn't screw things all to hell is a plus.
