Democrats strike again. They create a problem then blame the victims of the mess for the problem and then tell us the Government has to take over now to fix it. Maybe with the FBI investigations they will be able to trace the money trail back to the people who caused this whole mess.

This is a bunch of BS. The SEC has requirements for all public corporations. These Corps have to file 1/4ly and Annual reports that must be approved by the SEC. If any company was baking books there is no question that the Accounting firm that provided the data and the Officers are violation the law. WTF is the FBI going to do?

As an aside, the government could generate all sorts of income to help with this bailout if they'd legalize and tax "drugs" and prostitution.
Or, we could simply run around and wonder where to get all that money that's needed.

Responsible for what?
Loreli, Corporations are unique entities. You cannot throw a corporation in Jail. There is no law that says a corporation cannot make bad business decisions. Just as people make bad decisions so do Public Corporations.
What Corporations are liable for is playing by the Rules. In the case of a Public Corp the SEC is the referee between the shareholders and the Corp. The SEC has no responsibility to require a Corp to be smart. Only to play by the disclosure rules. It is an investors responsibility to read the financials and then decide to invest or not.
If the a Corp were baking their books the Auditing Firm and the officials of the Corp are clearly in violation of the law.
In the current situation it is not likely that there is criminal intent. What happened is like a ponzi scheme - they ran out of money.
Don't get too excited about revenge.

I'm only interested in a political accounting. I'm hopeful that the FBI investigations will be able to expose the political meddling in such a way that the MSM won't be able to ignore it. It probably won't happen but one can dream.

cre8, in my partially informed opinion - I think that the companies that were involved in Primary Mortgage lending will be in big trouble. They were the ones that were selling bad paper to the investment banks and then Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Companies like CountryWide were the first to be hit. It then began rolling up or downhill, your choice.
The securities that were sold to the secondary lenders were regulated so if there was fraud it would happen at this exchange.
I have read that Fannie and Freddie may be in trouble for buying more risky paper than their charter allowed. They will be in minor trouble.

Oh boy...the ones doing the interrogation are the ones that need to be interrogated.
It has been shown repeatedly that the collapse fo Freddie Mac/Fannie Mae is what is causing the issue. It has also been shown repeatedly that the issue lies at the feet of one group of individuals.

 Gotta love it, don't you? The fact that this 110th Congress hasn't done what people voted them into office to do is their fault, despite being obstructed from that by the Republican minority, yet when the Republicans controlled both houses, anything they couldn't get done was the fault of the obstructionist Democratic minority. Amazing, isn't it, that the Dems who can't get anything done while they're in power can bring Congress to a standstill when they're in the minority? It's even more amazing that the Democrats killed this in committee when Dick Shelby (R) of Alabama was the Senate Banking Committee chairman at the time (2003).

The "party of obstruction" thwarted the Republicans all the while the GOP held control of Congress. The only way the GOP could get bills through was if they'd pile on lots of pork to buy the Dems votes

For 6 years the republicans held the vote in both houses of congress and wrote a blank check for the war in Iraq!
And until mid-terms...2006...the republicans held swagger over the Democrats threatening to do away with the filibuster in order to make the Democrats toe the line!
