McCain seeks to delay debate to focus on economy Sep 24 02:58 PM US/Eastern By BETH FOUHY Associated Press Writer Write a Comment NEW YORK (AP) - Republican John McCain says he's directing his staff to work with Barack Obama's campaign and the debate commission to delay Friday's debate because of the economic crisis.
In a statement, McCain says he will stop campaigning after addressing former President Bill Clinton's Global Initiative session on Thursday and return to Washington to focus on the nation's financial problems.
McCain also said he wants President Bush to convene a leadership meeting in Washington. Both he and Obama would attend the session.
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.
NEW YORK (AP)—Republican presidential candidate John McCain met Wednesday with a panel of business executives to seek their opinions on the Bush administration's proposed $700 million bailout of U.S. financial markets.
McCain said he wanted to discuss "how we can make sure that the American people regain confidence on Main Street so that they can regain their confidence in Wall Street and in Washington."
McCain renewed his insistence that the bailout deal have greater transparency, oversight and CEO accountability to make it acceptable to voters.
"Most Americans feel very strongly this isn't their fault. It's Wall Street and Washington and the cozy insider relationships that have caused a great part of the problems," he said.
Flanking McCain were former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, his one-time rival for the GOP presidential nomination, and former eBay CEO Meg Whitman. Others in the meeting were John Chambers, CEO of Cisco Systems, and John Thain, the CEO of Merrill Lynch before it was acquired by Bank of America earlier this month for a much-reduced value.
A survey by The Associated Press found that Thain was the best-paid corporate executive in the U.S. in 2007, receiving approximately $83.1 million in salary and bonuses that year.
McCain has stated repeatedly that the bailout package should not allow large payouts, called "golden parachutes," for executives at failing firms like Merrill Lynch. Asked whether he believed the panel of business titans agreed with him on that principle, McCain said, "I think this group of people are as knowledgeable on the financial status of America as any group of Americans that I can find."
McCain planned to meet later Wednesday with foreign leaders in town for the opening of the United Nations General Assembly. His running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, was set to join him in a meeting with Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili and Ukrainian President Viktor Yuschenko.
McCain was also scheduled to meet with Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and with Bono, the lead singer of U2 and an activist on global poverty and AIDS. He was scheduled to tape an appearance on "Late Night with David Letterman."
McCain scheduled a session with Lady Lynn de Rothschild, a former supporter and fundraiser for Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential run who announced last week that she was supporting McCain.

Or just maybe he was scared to death of that debate and putting his foot in his mouth anymore about how the economy is not in trouble ..
the pundits were all saying that Obama will let McCain's temper get him in trouble..
And it's interesting that John McCain has now made this all about him.. that everything hinges on just what John McCain does.. what a power trip for him.. eh?

PMF - I understand that the two candidates have contacted each other about this and in a mature, bipartisan manner have decided that Friday is no time for a debate about Foreign Policy and Security. Makes sense to me.
Most brainless morons (yes like some here^^) won't know that there was an actual topic proposed ahead of time and will put their foot through their fookin flat screens (that hurts more than the old fashioned TV) as they are enraged that no one is discussing the big bill that COngress has been politicizing all week.
While this may be good for businesses like Best Buy it will bankrupt the insurance companies when these sniveling fools lie and try to claim that the a rock flew into their house and shattered their $2000 Flat screen!
I say hats off to both.

There has yet to be a response from Senator Obama, they are waiting for it.
And some are positing that this is just a ploy by McCain to put himself into control before he ever gets elected. He had already said that he would hold up the vote on the bail out unless it was written the way wants it to be.. yes, for the good of the country..
I guess the snippy comment I just heard about some not being able to walk and chew gum at the same time (refering to John not being able to campaign and debate Obama, and do his job as a Senator)

McCain said he has spoken to Obama about his plans and asked the Democratic presidential nominee to join him.
The Obama campaign said Obama had called McCain around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday to propose that they issue a joint statement in support of a package to help fix the economy as soon as possible. McCain called back six hours later and agreed to the idea of the statement, the Obama campaign said. McCain’s statement was issued to the media a few minutes later. http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/USElection/2008/09/24/6866086-ap.html

Very mature on both canidates..
As far as some people..dont care. Only looking forward to a debate..McCain is the one very well spoken...Obama needed this..When questions are shot his way he babbles more then any person I have ever seen!
I was reading about Bill Clinton giving Palin's husband advice..of what to do and not..and he admired the man.
Put problems ahead of everything else, as of now..Very smart thing to do!!

PMF, I was refering to John's repeated statements about the 'strong' economy, despite $4 a gallon gas prices and the shaky housing market, and now suspending his campaign because of the current economic crisis.. how out of touch is he, anyway?

Another case of this administration saying "Give us what we want now, and we will explain why later"
Well guess what, most of America is fed up with this administration demanding things and that is why there is a big debate about this bailout in Congress, and why McCain has to suspend his campaign..
The doom and gloomers in the administration saying that if this bill is not passed immediately will cause the US to go into a depression, spiraling unemployment, yada yada yada.. scare tactics again..

John McCain has plenty of eyes and ears in Washington to know what is going on with the bailout package, So does Barack Obama.
There is no reason for suspending the campaign, and for postponing the debate.
He is not desperately needed in DC.. just why did he make an annoucement like this unless it is to cast Obama in a bad light if he (Obama) feels he should not drop everything and run back to DC to sit around during arguments..

McCain suspends Campaign, postpones Debate - returns to Senate& focus on Economy = I know I'm gonna get my ass whooped, I ain't ready. Time Out.
Wasn't this loud mouth boosting about wanting a few more then just the three in the first place? Answer Yes. Repeatedly, and now he wants to delay the first official one? Server case of Igottaloserlimp. He threw sand in the eyes with his right hand VP choice, picking our pockets with his left, spits in our eyes, all while straight talking out of his @ss, and he wants a time out?
