A $100,000 state grant for a botanic garden in Englewood that then-state Sen. Barack Obama awarded in 2001 to a group headed by a onetime campaign volunteer is now under investigation by the Illinois attorney general amid new questions, prompted by Chicago Sun-Times reports, about whether the money might have been misspent.

More...Where'd the $$$ go?

You left out this part, pup.
Madigan's office has notified Obama's presidential campaign of the probe, which was launched this week. But Obama's actions in awarding the money are not a focus of the investigation, Smith said.

NO - Barry PROMISED the people that this would be built.

So much for his word.

Just another Community Organizer with no responsibility.

NO, this was a project that Barry conceived. He then, in a speech PROMISED the people in the area that this garden area would be built.

He lied.

If he cannot get a fookin gazebo built how can he be Commander in Chief.

I don't see anything in the quoted article that said that Senator Obama "conceived" this. And if you call every broken "promise" to comittment by a politician a lie, you don't have anyone left to vote for. Crap, show me a presidential candidate who isn't introduced as "and here, the NEXT PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES..." And you call all that lying? With the crapola you pump out you can actually accuse someone of making an overblown statement of lying? What---ever. Here's a big lie for you to digest: (Has to do with a little more than a failed inner-city improvement project): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vQjEasXi3sg&feature=related (If only we'd realize how little the best of his abilities amounted to and that when he said he would execute the office he thought they meant kill it.)

NO - of course you do not know the story of Barry's failed project. You only read liberal whack job web sites and are in denial about this empty suit, do nothing Senator.

Once again I will enlighten you. It was his project. This may be his only accomplishment. Read'em and weep.

As a state senator, Barack Obama gave $100,000 in state money to a campaign volunteer who failed to deliver on a plan to create a botanic garden in one of Chicago's most blighted neighborhoods.

Obama -- who was running for Congress when he announced the project in 2000 -- said the green space in Englewood would build ''a sense of neighborhood pride."

Instead, what was supposed to be a six-block stretch of trees and paths is now a field of unfulfilled dreams, strewn with weeds, garbage and broken pavement.

Kenny B. Smith, whose nonprofit group got the money, said it was spent legitimately, mostly on underground site preparation. But he admitted Thursday that the garden is a lost cause because other government money never came through.

"We gave up," said Smith, who heads the Chicago Better Housing Association. "It was a losing battle."

Smith -- an early Obama supporter who gave $550 to his state and congressional campaigns -- said he gave his paperwork documenting the work to a state agency and no longer has it. A Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity spokeswoman said officials would look into the matter.

Smith blamed the site's current poor condition on construction material dumped there during the state's recent reconstruction of the Dan Ryan Expy.

But a reporter walked the site last week with a landscape architect from the Illinois Green Industry Association who found no evidence of the work Smith cited. The only major changes since 2000: A gazebo was added, and some trees were cut down.

You're like the IRS. "You're guilty of what we accuse you of until you prove differently!" Funny. You know what low esteem tax collectors are held in, right?

NO - just WTF are you babbling about now?

Barry conceived this project and made a big speech about it. The project failed. He failed the people of Chicago.

The idiot can't seem to follow through on a fookin GAZEBO. He should have called Jimmahhh Carter and gotten Habitat for Humanity to build the fookin thing. One million dollars - no Gazebo - no Garden?

Change!

Uban Renewal You Can Believe In!

ENGLEWOOD IS EYED FOR BOTANICAL GARDEN
Chicago Tribune. Chicago, Ill.: Jan 15, 2000. pg. 5
A group of politicians, school administrators and community activists unveiled a plan Friday for a $1.1 million botanical garden in the city's Englewood neighborhood.

The proposal calls for a walk beneath the "L" tracks on Princeton Avenue, from 59th Place to 62nd Place. Backers said they hope it will help spur redevelopment in the impoverished area, boost neighborhood pride and soften the impact of traffic and pollution from the nearby Dan Ryan Expressway.

State Sen. Barack Obama (D-Chicago) said he planned to seek state funding for the effort and estimated that ground could be broken in early 2001.

The proposed garden also would include a gazebo, a parrot sanctuary and a walk of fame.

At a Friday, January 14th press conference at Englewood High School, State Senator Barack Obama (D-13) unveiled a $1.1 million dollar [sic] Englewood Beautification Plan developed by community residents and leaders.

Again, Vin, you've overblown crap. Typically. The plan was developed by community residents and leaders and wasn't even in his district, but was in the congressional district he was running for at the time. Hardly sounds like anything he "conceived." But then we all know the problems you have with English comprehension. What's really funny, is Obama's support is largely coming from young, college-educated people, Vin. They read these articles and see through all the smoke and sparks and realize THIS is much ado about nothing. No one is going to be convinced by this kind of lightweight smear to change their minds. All you guys are doing is bashing (and rather ineffectually). I'll go away now and let you turn this into another little right-wing circle jerk where the Obama detractors all sit around and congratulate themselves and each other on finding something else to bolster their misguided opinions.

Obama lost the democratic run in the HR to Bobby Rush in 2000.

Obama was elected to the Illinois Senate in 1996, succeeding State Senator Alice Palmer as Senator from Illinois' 13th District, which then spanned Chicago South Side neighborhoods from Hyde Park-Kenwood south to South Shore and west to Chicago Lawn. Once elected, Obama gained bipartisan support for legislation reforming ethics and health care laws. He sponsored a law increasing tax credits for low-income workers, negotiated welfare reform, and promoted increased subsidies for childcare. In 2001, as co-chairman of the bipartisan Joint Committee on Administrative Rules, Obama supported Republican Governor Ryan's payday loan regulations and predatory mortgage lending regulations aimed at averting home foreclosures.

Obama was reelected to the Illinois Senate in 1998, and again in 2002. In 2000, he lost a Democratic primary run for the U.S. House of Representatives to four-term incumbent Bobby Rush by a margin of two to one.

In January 2003, Obama became chairman of the Illinois Senate's Health and Human Services Committee when Democrats, after a decade in the minority, regained a majority. He sponsored and led unanimous, bipartisan passage of legislation to monitor racial profiling by requiring police to record the race of drivers they detained and legislation making Illinois the first state to mandate videotaping of homicide interrogations. During his 2004 general election campaign for U.S. Senate, police representatives credited Obama for his active engagement with police organizations in enacting death penalty reforms. Obama resigned from the Illinois Senate in November 2004 following his election to the US Senate

In mid-2002, Obama began considering a run for the U.S. Senate; he enlisted political strategist David Axelrod that fall and formally announced his candidacy in January 2003

Englewood Location:
