Oct. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Alaska Republican lawmakers and the state attorney general lost their bid to block a legislative investigation of Governor Sarah Palin's firing of the state police chief.T
In his ruling yesterday, issued minutes before the start of the vice-presidential debate, Alaska state court Judge Peter Michalski said the Alaska Legislative Council can move ahead with its investigation, including having the state Senate Judiciary Committee subpoena Palin aides to testify.
``It is legitimately within the scope of the Legislature's investigatory power to inquire into the circumstances surrounding the termination of a public officer,'' Michalski wrote in his ruling.
July 11 Firing The police chief said he was dismissed for refusing to fire state trooper Mike Wooten, who was involved in a divorce and custody battle with Palin's sister. Sucks when others personal issues messes with you and your work doesn't it? I mean now your family is affected by something you would wish not to be involved with at all.
Seven Palin aides failed to show last month to testify to the Legislature's special investigator after they were subpoenaed by the Judiciary Committee. Monegan claims some of the aides pressured him to fire Wooten. Ain't that illegal?
At lease the husband wasn't filed in the suit. Husband and Wife should never be forced to testify against one another in my book. source.

Yawn...
The investigator was found to be VERY close personal friends of Wooten. No conflict of interest there
Also, the Investigator (I use that term very loosely...like Gh does) is a known liar.
Photo: Look DEAD CENTER in the photo, LOL
Hollis “Gunny” French (D) is guilty of misrepresenting that he served in the Marine Corps - when in fact his ONLY exposure to the Marine Corp was attending a Marine ROTC PLC - from which he was DISMISSED and granted a “Discharge” as a Private.
–He NEVER attended, much less graduate from either of the USMC Boot Camps.
–He FAILED to pass the ROTC Platoon Leader Course - thus failing to make the grade to become a Marine Officer.
–Hardly service as a Marine, and the folks in Alaska caught up with French’s claims….
–Folks in Alaska to this day, still jokingly refer to the jackass poseur as “Gunny French” and he hates the reminder of his lie
From Patriot Files:
The lead dog on the Troopergate smear campaign has a little explaining to do himself. On his official State of Alaska website he claims to have been in the Marine Corps Reserve in 1977-78 as a private. There is also a reference to PLC or Platoon Leader’s Course. As a former Marine, this smells fishy. In another story French claims he spent six weeks at Quantico, VA. As every Marine knows, Quantico is where Marine officer training occurs. For French to have been a Marine private he would have had to complete basic training at either Parris Island or San Diego, which takes about three months. I also did a military.com search of Hollis French and came up empty. For Hollis French to claim to have been a Marine Reservist is stretching the truth and an insult to all Marines, past and present.
French listed his service as “USMC (ROTC) 1977-1978,” which he later explained was six weeks training at the Quantico, Va., Marine Corps base. French said most people saw his military record as a non-issue and he never tried to make it out as anything more or less than was stated in the pamphlet.
INFLATED-FALSE POLITICAL RESUME
Paul A. Bauer, Jr. Anchorage, AK Oct. 6, 2002
To All Concerned,
I take special note of those politicians and candidates that inflate or add false information to their resume by misrepresenting themselves to the public just for a vote.
The political resume of Hollis French that was listed in the Sunday Anchorage Daily News said that he has military service in the U.S. Marine Corps ROTC, 1977-78. This is misleading. A student in the ROTC program is not in the military, nor is it counted as any such service. I am guessing, the most Mr. Hollis did in ROTC was to take a few ROTC college courses, maybe he was washed out after a year, and he wants the public to believe that ROTC constitutes as military service. It is not.
The ROTC program is also available to students in high schools around the nation. Does Mr. French want the public to believe that those students also had service in the military?
A military member in the service who is caught inflating their military record is “busted” and would never have a chance of promotion. In a similar situation, one top-ranking officer in the Navy committed suicide when he was caught inflating his military record.
Hollis’s misrepresentation is a dishonor and disservice to all servicemen and women that truly served, as well as to the public he wishes to serve.
The media has the responsibility to inform the public of the truth. When gathering information, media reporters should understand what constitutes military service and report it accurately
Paul Bauer Jr. THAT is the DEMOCRATIC investigator...

Very interesting. In several other threads, Gman, you indicated that Palin had asked for the investigation, because of the involvement of the state's Attorney General. Seems he was just there to thwart the investigation.
Sarah Palin, as was clear from her performance last night, is not looking toward November 2008, but possibly November 2012. Should this investigation produce a negative finding for Palin, her reputation as a reformer will forever be besmirched. The stakes, however, are far higher. If the investigation produces evidence that Palin and/or her husband Todd could face formal charges -- obstruction, etc. And then, she her entire political career could be over.
Abuse of power is abuse of power.

In the short term, Todd Palin may be looking at a short stint in jail for failing to appear before the investigative committee after he had been served a subpoena to testify.

And of course the investigation is going forward! I would love it as she is viewing the election...in walks the Federal Marshall's with a Fugitive From Justice Warrant from Alaska...then handcuffing that....fruitcake and taking her to jail!
Now, that would be worth celebrating! YYYEEEEEEHHHHHAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!

Todd Palin, like any other individual, can be held in contempt for failure to answer a subpoena. A finding of contempt can land a person in jail. In Palin's case, the Alaska Senate would be required to vote on the contempt charge.
Todd Palin's lawyer, Thomas Van Flein, argued that his client did not have to testify, because the ethics committee of the legislature had no standing to investigate the governor -- this was the crux of the argument that was dismissed by the judge this week. Therefore, Palin's argument that he need not testify is moot.
If Sarah and Todd Palin and others on her staff are found to acted improperly, her reputation will be damaged. She no longer will be viewed as the reformer, but a politician who is no different than Frank Murkowski, the former governor who left under a cloud.
Are Palin's actions worse than Murkowski's? Probably not, but the disappointment level of the electorate may be higher. She held herself up as someone with different standards, she raised the bar and she will suffer proportionately should the committee produce findings that cast her in a bad light. Furthermore, the McCain campaign understands the magnitude of the problem and that would explain their aggressive role in this matter.

Following last week's court decision, the seven aides to Governor Palin who had refused to testify before the committee investigating "troopergate" have now all informed the committee's chairman, Hollis French, that they will appear. Requests to Governor Palin and her husband Todd, both of whom had been subpoenaed by the committee, have gone unanswered. I'm sure there's more to come on this.

If everything I'm hearing about this story is true, then yes, it was an abuse of power. And yes, I would have done the same thing.
But then again, I don't let people fvck with my family.
