This reflects some of what Shield was talking about--at least in California:
In 2004, I introduced SB 1803 to eliminate the preferential treatment for intra-familial child molesters. Who could possibly oppose such a measure? Dr. Bruce Perry, a world-renowned child psychologist, testified along with actual victims of incest who had the courage to speak out, but it was to no avail. The bill died in the very liberal Democrat-controlled Senate Committee on Public Safety. The Democrat legislators refused to consider the suffering inflicted on the victims and instead chose to focus on the potential rehabilitation of the perpetrators, stating that they did not want to break up the family by removing the breadwinner. What family?! I would contend that the parent or guardian destroyed the home when they raped their child. Allowing someone to go free because they make enough money to support the victim destroys the notion of justice—what if this same argument was used in all types of domestic battery?

I seems pretty clear to me, the Obama campaign is aiming towards the center to shore up it's base, and McCain is aiming to the right for his.
In the end, if either is elected, Obama is going to back to the far left, and McCain will head back to the center.
The choice seems pretty simple to me.

President Bush must surely understand, as all economists know, that the daily swings in the stock market are driven by mass psychology and have almost nothing to do with the underlying strength in the economy.
So this would mean that McCain was correct in that the fundamentals of the economy are strong?
Or is it simple waffling and ranting?

You can try and twist this anyway you want, but what is truly scary is what the evangelical/republican party has done to this country and our constitution over the last few years.
And you accuse others of twisting things? You said what you said and even now twist the facts. Thus is the nature of liberalism.

All that stuff posted on the front page is just so much negativism! Started just to black the Democrats and to enhance a failed republican agenda!
And it is an agenda that is firmly listing 40% to starboard and sinking by the bow...the S.S. McCain/Palin Campaign!

Nope, right now I don't think much COULD be worse. I'd nominate Brad Sherman, blue dog dem from California. He voted against the bailout BOTH times. I listened to him on CSPAN and he made more sense than anyone I've heard in Washington in years.

Why would you be writing to Harold Ford? He used to be a congressional representative from Tennessee and you say you live in Atlanta Georgia. Wouldn't it be more useful to contact someone from your own state? Or since you were actually in attendance at those conferences as you claim, why wouldn't you just call one of the staffers in attendance if indeed you needed a printout of the rather absurd and poorly laid out so-called platform positions of the Democratic Party. Also.. who on earth is Richard Trickle? Isn't he a NASCAR driver? Wouldn't the sort of paranoid rantings in the note Richard wrote come from the sort of faux conservative who feels that Democrats are all munching arugula in some area of Massachusetts and hating on NASCAR loving, assault weapon toting folks from the south who are just trying to manufacture stuff without all them narrow eyed China men getting in the way?
Also, I 'd be curious to know just EXACTLY what issue caused redhairnfreckles's Dad to leave the Democratic Party in the early 60s. Was this in NORTH CAROLINA in the 60s... I think we know WHY a lot of Democrats like Jesse Helms and Strom Thurmond became Republicans back then. Perhaps THEIR motivations were HIS motivations? Just askin'...

Welcome to MD and the forums, Lester.
The post at the beginning reflects the 'current' view of the Democratic Party, and the discussion has revolved around the changes over the years in the various platforms of the Party, and whether some of those changes are embraced by those who are Democrats now. Shield is from Calhoun, Richard is the one from Atlanta, but both are from Georgia.
