I'm guessing it's not going to be a Blood Hound. Maybe they should go for a pit-bull.
Just a thought.

Aww cre8...it's been something Obama's daughters have wanted for a long time, but couldn't from where they lived in Chicago; no land there to raise a dog so it can run and play. The streets too close to the house and all. And One of his daughter's is allergic, so my guess would be in the poodle breed. Obama said recently that they will be picking out a dog at a shelter.

Poodles aren't particularly good for people who are allergic. Poodles are actually long-hairs. If you're allergic to pet dander, you want to stick with short-hairs that don't shed much. A beagle or a dachsund maybe. Actually, bull dogs fit the bill too (but they slobber too much).

I thought he was the candidate for change? Getting a dog is just more of the same. He should consider getting a pet lynx.

There is no such thing as a truly non-allergenic or hypoallergenic dog. Dogs (and cats for that matter) produce allergenic proteins that can be found in their dander and saliva, regardless of their breed or the length and color of their hair, or lack thereof. Some may produce more - or less - allergens than others simply because of their individual nature. Allergen immunotherapy may be an option for those who wish to be desensitized to such allergens.
Some breeds that shed less or not at all are.. Bichon Frisé Cairn Terrier Goldendoodle Maltese Poodles Schnauzers

Actually, poodles aren't very allergen producing -- its the IgE allergen in their saliva, which in turn produces the dander. That's why you see so many poodle hybrids like the Goldendoodle and the Labradoodle, etc.

A Yorkshire terrier.... they don't miss a thing and sleep with one eye open.
My old Yorky defended me from everything. She shredded two sets of postmen's trousers. She saved me from my electric shaver (which was riddled with teethmarks after I made the mistake of shaving in the same room). And not a single neighbourhood stray cat got near her bowl in nearly twenty years.
And she was intelligent too. If there was no kebab attached to the stick, you could just as well fetch it yerself...
My vote's for the Yorkshire attack terrier... preferably female... Better watch out...

They are fearless little dogs. In my old neighborhood, we had lots of dogs of all sizes. This one little Yorkie would growl at this rare shephard breed -- huge, black curly-coated dog. We'd all laugh..."Okay, killer!" She was a hoot.

Wonder how non-allergenic a Bouvier might be.
Excellent dog.
Schnauzer is a cool breed too, but the one I was familiar with wasn't so bright...
The Bouvier could practically talk, and had really good judgement about situations.
Goldendoodles are very cool!
One thing regarding the allergic thing: keep the dog CLEAN. If the kid has allergies, she's probably allergic to all the stuff that will coat an unwashed dog: dust, molds, grassy stuff...
I went through that series of allergy shots... for years. Didn't work for me.

Schipperke Schipperkes, in my experience, are very one-person dogs. That could be a problem with two kids...
(And I say that as someone who had a schipperke as a kid...)

How about a Basenji? AKA Congo dog? Short-haired, low allergen, highly intelligent and doesn't bark (it's not mute, but the sounds it makes aren't really barks). I shared quarters with one for several months and he was an absolute joy - extremely affectionate and fun to play with, and he was actually an oldster at the time. They're self-cleaning too, they're as fastidious as cats and links back to the African heritage of the family.

Poodles do not shed.
I think they should get a Pitbull with lipstick.

I had a neighbor in Brooklyn who had a Basenji. She was a very lovely dog. We've always had poodles in my family, in large part, because they didn't shed. And despite their bad press are very sweet, non-yippy dogs.

Actually, I have a pit/Weimaraner mix who's named Rosie because she's got so much pink - she's the prototypical pit bull with lipstick, and she even carries a pink purse around (if you don't believe me, ask Solitaire!).
They can't have her though!

Oh, she sounds like a sweetheart. My theory on Pitbulls, Rotties and other big dogs that occasionally eat neighborhood children...give them a silly name. Thor = childeater. Rosie = carries a pink pocketbook. I knew a Doberman named Petunia. She was just a sweetie. Lick you to death, played well with dogs and cats, etc.

The pitbull Dog reinforce the Urban image that Barry and his wife have portrayed to us.
Flipping the bird to Hillary and McCain with a pitbull on leash will complete his image!
All he needs now is a Harvard hat backwards and pants falling on the floor.
