I realize most of you don't get USGS notifications of earth quakes, but there have been three 6+ magnitude earthquakes in the last few hours, the most recent off of Ascension Island. For those not familiar with it. Ascension is a volcanic plug, and a fractured plug at that. Estimates are that a new eruption (it's a dormant volcano) or an earthquake (today's 6.2?) that causes the west slope of Ascension to slide into the sea could create a tidal wave that would impact most of the east coast of the United States. http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Quakes/us2008zsa8.php A 6.3 quake was off the coast of Sumatra, in the same geographic region as the quake that caused the Christmas tsunami almost 4 years ago that ravaged so much of that region
Updated: They have said there is no high risk of a widespread tsunami from either of these events, but are not ruling out "local" tsunamis close to the event epicenters.

755 km (470 miles) N of Ascension Island 870 km (540 miles) SW of Greenville, Liberia 900 km (560 miles) SSW of MONROVIA, Liberia 1680 km (1050 miles) WSW of ACCRA, Ghana
isn't it little early to start worrying??

Estimates are that a large flank collapse on Ascension's west slope could cause an Atlantic tidal wave that would impact the entire east coast of the United States, Gallows. How long would it take to evacuate low areas of Manhattan, Miami, Boston, Baltimore? A significant tunami would probably give them only hours lead time. Being aware that a quake has happened and checking for tsunami alerts is only preparedness.

Hey - what a blow that would be to the Democratic Party. All we would need is Cali to separate from the mainland and Chicago to implode!
Go earthquakes GO!

Uh.. Right. I know, GH. Okay, here' s the deal. I get notifications from the USGS on earthquakes. It's the closest thing to being beside the seismograph station. A 6.2 quake off the coast of Ascension is (to me) a time to watch very carefully for the next several hours to see if a flank collapse has been triggered. You know, check the news every hour or so, call my friends on the East coast and tell them to keep a half an ear on the new. I'm not saying it's time to evacuate, just that there has been an event and it's a good time to be watchful. Kind of like a Thunderstorm watch in my part of the country, even though there isn't a cloud in the sky. If you have an hour to gather together what you need to take with you, and 6 hours to drive inland (in front of the crush leaving in the hour before it hits), I think you stand a better chance of being less affected by it. More time to calmly plan where to go and what to do IN CASE of an emergency makes a lot more sense than a panick-stricken flight at the last minute.
Ole' vinny there possibly hasn't considered what a 15-20 foot surge tide would look like being funneled up the bay toward Baltimore.

You come into a thread chortling about the possibility of millions of people being killed in an earthquake. (Not just Democratic voters, mind you. Millions of children, as well. And if you don't care about children, then how about millions of your fellow Republican voters...?)
And you think I'm trolling?
I believe that sort of attitude, the finding of joy in the misery, pain, and devastation of others, to be sick.

YUP - I posted to the topic. You continue to post about me. And I posted a follow-up to your comment.
You want to see California and Chicago obliterated. Congrats. You've just hoped for more civilian deaths (36 million, about one in eight Americans) than Hitler and Stalin combined. Happy?
I'm sure Osama bin Laden would welcome your sentiment with heartfelt agreement.

It's bad enough you think this way. But to claim that the deaths of millions of children is FUNNY??? Dead children are not a laughing matter.

All we would need is Cali to separate from the mainland and Chicago to implode! Aside from the fact that I'd finally get my beachfront property , the USGS warnings on the Ascention Island quake refer to a potential tsunami on the EAST coast, not the WEST coast.
Maryland's on the EAST coast, right?
Nevermind. Don't concern your pretty little self with any of those silly ol' warnings, Vinny.

I saw a documentary on this threat once shortly after the 2004 tsunami in the Indian Ocean, but, unfortunately, it failed to examine the issue of whether the outlying barrier islands would absorb much of the punishment from a tsunami caused by the collapse of Ascension Island.

More time to calmly plan where to go and what to do IN CASE of an emergency makes a lot more sense than a panick-stricken flight at the last minute. Ah, but here's the rub. There is no early warning system for tsunamis on the east coast, only on the west coast.
BTW vinny, didn't you know that the Chesapeake Bay was actually created by a tsunami? Of course, in the case of the Chesapeake Bay, the tsunami was caused by a large meteor rather than an earthquake.

BTW - the Chesapeake Bay is not on the coast. Check out a map.
