Worker trampled to death at Long Island Wal-Mart during Black Friday stampede

A worker died after being trampled and a woman miscarried when hundreds of shoppers smashed through the doors of a Long Island Wal-Mart Friday morning, witnesses said.
The unidentified worker, employed as an overnight stock clerk, tried to hold back the unruly crowds just after the Valley Stream store opened at 5 a.m.
Witnesses said the surging throngs of shoppers knocked the man down. He fell and was stepped on. As he gasped for air, shoppers ran over and around him.
"He was bum-rushed by 200 people," said Jimmy Overby, 43, a co-worker. "They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too...I literally had to fight people off my back."
Nassau County Police are still investigating and would not confirm the witness accounts. Police did say there were several injuries but weren't more specific.
Jessica Keyes was among the shoppers. She told the Daily News she saw a woman knocked down just a few feet from the dying worker.
"When the paramedics came, she said 'I'm pregnant,'" Keyes said.
Paramedics treated the woman inside the store and then, according to Keys, told the woman:
"There's nothing we can do. The baby is gone."
Before police shut down the store, eager shoppers streamed past emergency crews as they worked furiously to save the store clerk's life.
"They were working on him, but you could see he was dead, said Halcyon Alexander, 29. "People were still coming through."
Only a few stopped.
"They're savages," said shopper Kimberly Cribbs, 27. "It's sad. It's terrible."

there is something wrong with a system that allows this to go on every year..
is saving a couple of dollars worth all this grief?
so..I am.. clueless here.....
..but do paramedics know when a supposedly pregnant woman has a miscarriage??

Black Friday is the first major "Christmas" shopping day......... come on it's not a stretch!
Anyone knows when the fetus is dead........... ya know - delivered or no heartbeat. My guess is she delivered.
What really struck me was........ Alicia Keys - standing in line at a WalMart?? I would have guessed she has a personal shopper.
Just sort of struck me strange. I have been to maybe 2 or 3 early (3am) Black Fridays. They are insane to say the least. Never got into something like this - I spent most my time cursing about the football field I had to walk to just get to the store.

( just a personal gripe of mine.. the friday after thanksgiving to me is....

I may go out yet today, or not.
But I will NEVER be in the opening hours mad rush.
Now, the 3 Walmarts here are 24 hours. Doing this shutdown and reopening is just asking for problems. JMO

Nope, you can't change the thread title anymore - we used to be able to, but after one of the upgrades it ended up messing up the pages so it's now locked..
(btw, it wasn't my brightness...as the screen flashed by when I posted, it actually looked like $o instead of So - I thought it was funny enough to share since it was $oooooooooo appropriate. And GH, I was thinking about the 798 buck 50 inch TV. Fortunately my SO noticed that it's very low resolution so it's probably better to skip it anyway)

You're right Katt, nothing funny about that at all. We really do need to get our priorities back in order, starting with just plain common sense - I've always joked about the 'thrill of the hunt' being the same for men and women, except for men it's hunting game and for women it's hunting bargains, but when it becomes real blood lust there's something very, very wrong.

GH, all the paramedics had to do upon the woman telling them she was pregnant was listen for a fetal heart beat at her abdomen with a stethoscope. The absence of a fetal heart beat would indicate fetal demise, or that "The baby is gone."
