Taking time out from bailing out financial institutions and auto companies, a member of Congress planned to introduce legislation Wednesday that would deal with something really important: abolishing the Bowl Championship Series system and forcing college football to adopt a playoff to determine a champion.
Rep. Joe Barton, R-Texas, didn't specify what sort of playoff he wants -- only that the BCS must go. Link
And these guys have absolutely nothing better to do right now? Let's see our entire government's approval rating drop to zero, and they still wouldn't have a clue.

I once suffered through the privilege of listening to Joe Barton testify before the House Science Committee. Barton and DeLay had sponsored a bill repealing the ban on CFCs. Industry, the medical community, environmental groups...everyone was opposed to the bill.
Barton finishes his statement, which is so full of scientific error that the geek with the pocket pen protector sitting next to me begins to weep audibly...until...Dana Rohrbacher, then chairman, exclaims: "Do you mean that banning CFCs will be there will be more carbohydrates in the atmosphere?" Barton nodded in ascent and the room erupted in laughter.

As anyone who's been there for any amount of time can say, god and football. That's about it for Texas. As you can plainly see, nothing else matters there.
Didn't someone on here say we should all model ourselves after Texas?

Theres no limit as to what the state that gave us LBJ and Bush will do. I agree the BCS should be abolished but not because Texas cant stand Oklahoma being in the big game and not them this year.

This thread is a fine example of congress not having their priorities straight. No wonder so many have been given the pink slip.

I agree, Kjac. After the events of the last 2 years, I am amazed that ANY congress-critter was re-elected. Any employee who was as ineffective at doing what they were directed to do would have been fired for cause long ago.

Haban, the voting public correctly identified the Republicans in Congress as obstructing the will of the majority. Hence the bloodbath in Congress, as the Democrats picked up huge gains in each house.
I'm kind of curious: did any Democrats lose their seats in Congress?

And in the finest tradition of the democratic congress, we annouce the winner of the national championship,,,,
DUKE!!!! GO BLUE DEVILS.
You see, we decided that Duke was the lowest performing program in 2008, and since it was not fair that OK, TX, CA, LA, etc. etc. etc.,,,were always ranked so high,,,
that we are taking the bowl revenues and the trophy and giving it to DUKE.
Now, don't we all feel better that we helped out "the little guy".

Now, don't we all feel better that we helped out "the little guy". Not even close. Duke actually won four games this year and they were acutally competitive, in most of the ones that they lost. They even won a conference game this year. 0 - 12 Washington had the worst record. Maybe they should play 2 - 10 Iowa State, in the politically correct BS championship. Give the bowl revenues to bailout these programs. After all, isn't it the responsibility of government to reward incompetence and to punish achievement?

See what happens when you start the give away programs,,,,
First Duke, now Washington and Iowa.
When will it ever stop?
OK, I agree, let's do a Washington and Iowa bowl. Of course, only the limited number of fans for those schools will watch, so TV revenues will go down, and we will have less overall revenues to spread out,,,, but it's the right thing, for the chiltren.
Why oh why did we ever think that just letting teams compete and the best teams take the prize was ever going to work?
Oh well,,,, How about a playoff system,,,, and scrap this whole concept of electronic statistic measures to determine the champion. If the model was all that good to start with, we could just skip the actual games and save all that money.
Nothing like a good laugh on Friday.
But in reference to the OP,,,,, this is not a job for Congress, and Joe Barton should write us a check for wasting our time and money with the whole thing.
