WASHINGTON — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appears to differ from Barack Obama on at least two issues — tax increases and investigating the Bush administration.

But the two Democrats agree on the need to address the soaring cost of entitlements such as Social Security and Medicare.

The speaker said today she wants Congress to consider repealing President George W. Bush’s tax cuts on those who make more than $250,000 well before they expire at the end of 2010. Obama had promised to repeal the tax cuts as well during the presidential campaign, but he has since backed off that pledge, signaling he would be willing to simply let them expire.

Ok Folks! Let's keep track of the broken promises this man makes and see who rises up to keep him accountable!

picking one's battle...playing pawns ..and the fine art of negotiation evidently is not your strong suit..

after being elected..Obama determined that he needs to stimulate the economy in a big way.. and for that he needs votes in congress

think about it.. a compromise of letting them expire..or taking them away if one does not play ball..

now on to a rant...

he has been POTUS for what... three, four days...???

can't you disgruntled republicans at least have the decency to wait until he actually does something wrong before you attack him??

I don't think anyone can scream "Broken Promises" after a few days!

Don't worry, I will be one of the first to complain if he does not live up to what he promised, unless there is a very good reason not too (I would suspect and check out any reason given)

Folks, give the man a chance. I think his heart is in the right place, he is very intelligent and he has chosen very smart people for his cabinet.

Here is a link to the Library of Congress and the document How Our Laws are Made. It is a very interesting document and well worth reading.

The Congress is a deliberative body. Under the Republicans, much of the workings in the House became broken. Subcommittees and committees rarely considered legislation of any importance. "Big" bills came from the leadership and went right to the floor for a vote, under a closed rule. No reading and studying the legislation ahead of time, no chance to amend problems with the bill, etc. And as they say, bad process often results in bad product.

Since Cong. Pelosi was elected Speaker, the Democrats have been working to restore the committee structure in the House. Subcommittees and committees are holding hearings on bills, like the economic stimulus package. While this ensures that the timeline for the passage of a bill is longer, it provides for an examination of the provisions of a bill that hopefully will uncover any huge flaws.

In the Senate, the power of an individual Senator to gum up the works by placing a hold on a bill or on a nominee far exceeds the powers that anyone, including the Speaker, can use in the House. Senate Republicans, most recently Jim Bunning of Kentucky, have placed holds on President Obama's cabinet nominees, etc.

In addition, the Obama Administration has been meeting with both Congressional Democrats and Republicans to craft legislation. Therefore, there is nothing broken. It hasn't worked its way through the process as yet.

Edited to fix a typo.

And you know, sometimes people make promises with the best of intentions, to later discover a better plan, or perhaps that there's something that wasn't apparent at the time that impedes the delivery of that promise. To hold someone to their word to the extreme that they can't waiver on anything they say, for any reason, is just plain childish.

What does it really matter Dukums?Obama is just another in a long line of political whores who came before him Bush 1,Clinton,Bush 2 i could go on and on.We the People have allowed our government to run amok for decades f***ing us every chance they get.As long as they throw us a bone every now and then the masses are satisfied. The whole system is sick and Washington needs an enema.I find it amusing both sides bitterly fight one another Exactly what the Government wants.Keeping us separate and fighting each other they can continue to do as they please.I don't blame them i blame us we have allowed this.

Budo. Actually it makes no difference. I am totally aware that he did not have the authority to make his promise come true in the first place so it was a perfect example that either he does not know his constitutional law or a blatant panderer. What the point of the post was something esle. How many years did we hear "Bush Lied"!

Well Dems if you are so holy and noble then you need to start up the chant again! "Obama Lied!"

But the two Democrats agree on the need to address the soaring cost of entitlements such as Social Security and Medicare.

...That one bothers me the most, in that it does not feel like an entitlement, but rather a lifelong imposed tax on labor, at the now rate of 15.3% of gross wages, for retirement and medical benefits.

...The Democrats took same from it's own separate fund and put it into the General fund, replaced with IOU's in excess of $40 Trillion owed to those that paid into it, but actually a public debt. If it is not there, then it has been a slave tax on labor, totally unconstitutional and yes, created by the Democrats as well.

...Can anyone understand how much money they would have in their retirement account after 50 years of funding with 15.3% of their gross earnings, at even a minimal 5 or 6% interest rate? ... for most of us that work, that would be in the $Millions and these very same politicians pissed it all away and now crying they want more.

...My first thought is fcuk em and feed em fish heads.

PS: I guess it is an entitlement by the government's definition, but they keep claiming the fund is empty (no siht!), while it has been paying this country's other debts since Johnson moved the fund into the General fund.

It seems that the republicans want Obama to clean up the mess it took 8 years to make in a few days.....................

Don't think it is going to work that way. If fact some of this mess will be here decades from now.

I for one, am grateful that Obama is overturning everything he can, as quick as he can.

NAFTA was signed by Clinton, but was negotiated by GHWB via his US Trade Representative Carla Hills. In addition to the NAFTA bill per se, GHWB also muscled through the trade agreement approval mechanism -- fast track -- which has been used to secure passage of subsequent trade agreements. Under fast track approval, Congress could not amend the trade agreement to add environment, labor, etc provisions.

Yup, and the fact that Bush pushed through five more NAFTA type treaties between election day and now? NAFTA was everybody...and the same disingenous line about Congress - how long was it that they pretty much gave Bush carte blanche and pushed through anything he asked for? How long was it before he exercised his first veto? Something like SIX YEARS?

Please, please, take a look at the records and not just knee jerk reactions! BOTH sides of the aisle, as well as every administration, have contributed to getting us to where we are. As to the initial post, today's Obama's one week anniversary in office, and as far as I can see, he's fast-tracking his promises a lot more rapidly than I would have thought possible. I'm thrilled to see that Geithner is getting ready to confront China about their currency policies - that's one of the biggies in our balance of trade problems. As long as they're tying their currency to ours, there's absolutely no way we can compete in a free market.

Unemployment is spreading and so's the misery level. Even if you're not directly affected, I doubt there's anyone here who doesn't have people they care about affected by it. Right now it's trying to find a balance between being fiscally responsible and knowing that unless we spend more, HERE in the USA, the recession is going to deepen into a depression. That's true on both a government and a personal level too. People aren't spending, fewer employees are needed, more are laid off, people spend less...etc.

P.S. I voted for him, but certainly not because of ALL his campaign promises - I've said all along that he came across as wildly liberal during the campaign (or maybe it was the McCain team that made him seem so) but I hoped that he'd be more centrist when he came into office - overall I don't see anything happening that upsets me...but I promise that if I do,I'll jump up and down too!

If fact some of this mess will be here decades from now.

There is that 10 year thing again. All promises will be kept in 10 years. You know, even if he gets a second term,,,, that's 8 years at most. How about mile posts along this 10 year trek,,,,, to hold them accountable.

I don't scoff at the timeline, excpet that the victory date is non-accountable to the administration,,,, and that during the campaign, the sales pitch was that this was already worked out,,,, the great plan,,,,, the hope,,,, the change,,,, blah, blah, blah,,,

when supporters were questioned about how it was going to work, and when it was going to work,,,,

the top 10 answers we got back were:

1. you are a racist, it's not about race,
2. Bush sucks,
3. Republicans are the problem,
4. Bush sucks some more,
5. You have to have faith,
6. Bush still sucks,
7. You are greedy, and are the problem,
8. Palin is a stupid bitch,
9. you are still a racist, you are still greedy, and ,,,,
10. Bush sucks.

So,,,,, pardon us for asking now. BUSH is gone,,, (yes burns, I hear you cheering),,,,the president has the mandate of the people,,,,the control on congress,,,, and the PLAN WAS/IS READY TO GO,,,,,

OK,,, let's see it. NOW.

I want to see how increasing government spending even more is going to work to re-energize our ecconomy. I want to see how raising the CGT is going to spark investing. I want to see how placing tougher emmission standards on new cars is going is going to maximize the rate at which the Auto company bailouts will be paid back. I want to see how forking over billions to the banks is going to sustain people keeping their homes. I want to see how restructing the entire health care system into a government program is going to make medical treatment more affordable and more available and more efficent.

And,, I want to see the numbers, not the prose. I want it in writing, with a stated goal, objectives, and mile posts for measurements for accountability.

I haven't seen anything like this,,,,, yet. Not in the last 20 years,, never mind the last 8.
