file photo source of washinton post
They say that a picture worth a thousand words. Well I've heard the debate on both sides of this issues as to whether the above photo is a racist depictions of President Obama. I have to admit on this one I don't agree that it is. It's certainly ill-advised and tacky on a lot of levels, but I just don't see the racist connection on this one. That's not saying, however, that I don't understand why someone else might.

I agree Ono...
I think it was more of a timing issue..
The stimulous plan and the chimp attack...
I dont think it was meant to personally attack Pres. Obama or the black race..
I would hope we are past that kind of behavior..
We are ALL Gods children..None better than any other..

Huh?
When I heard about this, I fully expected to NOT believe it had a racist connotation.
Now that I actually see it, my first reaction was that it is blatantly racist.
They are shooting a monkey and and referring to the person who devised the "Stimulus" plan.
I must be missing the non- racist interpretation.
You see another meaning? Please explain what the non- racist interpretation could be? I'm missing it.

First, there is already a thread on this topic. That said....
There is a long and distastful history of racist metaphor comparing black men to monkeys.
Secondly, the cartoonist, Sean Delonas, has a rather long history of derogatory cartoons. The usual fixation of his animus is gay men.

No one is more of a debunker of the politically correct than me.
But just because there is rampant and colossally stupid political correctness everywhere, doesn't mean that some things are not legitimately racist and repugnant.
And to me, this appears to be an example of the real thing.
One of the problems with the constant cries of wolf about "racism" at every drop of a hat is that it disarms justified reaction to things that are legitimately reprehensible.
Until I hear a convincing non-racist interpretation of this cartoon, I have to agree with those who call it racist. I myself find it repugnant.

in this thread...
http://www.matchdoctor.com/thread_88_34133_1/Sometimes_People_Do_Get_Out_Of_Hand.html
the OP here stated...
onoudn .....I posted about this same thing, not knowing that this thread had already been posted; do not read that thread op. After reading the post here I have reconsidered, and I now object to the chimp pic on racial grounds. I also don't really like Al Sharpton always being made out to be a race-baiter, cause I can understand, in this instance, why he is outraged;...........

Sharpton IS a race pimp.
He suffers from the problem I described above.
If you are constantly crying wolf, you lose your credibility. And he long ago lost any that he may have ever had (at least going back to ther Tawana Brawly case ...what was that... maybe 25 years ago?).
This is perhaps the only time I have ever agreed with him on such a charge.

Honestly, when I saw the cartoon on the evening news, I never once gave it a thought that it was making fun of Obama. Actually, I was thinking of the poor chimp who was shot because of the results of being held captive as a "pet", and the woman that is fighting for her life because of his attack. (I know, I always seem to look further beyond the actual circumstances.... )

Apparently, within the walls of the New York Post there is a great deal of concern about the cartoon and the employees are weighing in that the cartoon was racist. The Post's associate editor sent out an email to the newspaper's employees distancing herself from the cartoon, which she didn't see until after the fact.

Now Im gonna argue against my points in the other thread. Why? cause I can.
The days of using race to sell shit is long over, We don't want to talk about it, see it in print or televised ads, anymore, cause its not politically correct. It makes us feel guilt, which we should for the intent of harm was and is always there.
Racism is STILL alive and present in America.

Sharpton lead a protest today and the N.Y. Post replied...
Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz said his office received complaints about the cartoon and he understands why.
“If its disturbing connection to reprehensible racial stereotyping was unintentional, it just proves once again how disconnected the Post is from New York City and its residents. And for such a weak joke," Markowitz said in a statement. "There’s no excuse. The ‘editors’ overseeing such content should be ashamed—and held accountable. The Post is always quick on the attack, so now we ask that they do the right thing and apologize to all who were offended by this tasteless cartoon.” http://www.nbcnewyork.com/station/as_seen_on/NY-Post-Cartoon-of-Dead-Chimp-Stirs-Outrage.html

food for thought...
http://www.free-researchpapers.com/dbs/b11/smu186.shtml...Prejudices combine to form a stereotype which involves emotions like love and loyalty generally toward members of ingroups or hate and fear toward outgroups, they are exaggerated images that are hard to change even in the face of contradictory evidence. Racism is a more powerful and destructive form of prejudice, racism refers to the belief that one racial category is innately superior or inferior to another. Today, racism remains a serious social problem everywhere as people still contend that some racial and ethnic categories are better than others are. Social scientist have came up with various theories to explain prejudice. The first hypothesis is the scapegoat theory holds that prejudice springs from frustration. The authoritarian personality theory follows it, which states that extreme prejudice was a personality trait of particular individuals. The third approach holds that, some prejudice is common to everyone since such attitudes are embedded in culture. The last views claims that powerful people utilize prejudice as a strategy to oppress minorities. Closely related to prejudice is the concept of discrimination, any action that involves treating various categories of people unequally. Like prejudice, discrimination can be either positive ( providing special advantages ) or negative. Social scientist describe patterns of interaction among racial and ethnic categories in terms of four models; Pluralism, assimilation, segregation, and genocide. Pluralism is a state in which racial and ethnic minorities are distinct but have social parity. Pluralism is the goal of our society's recent trend toward multiculturalism. Assimilation is the process by which minorities gradually adopt patterns of the dominant culture. This involves changing modes of dress, values religion, language, or friends. Not surprisingly, elite's tend to favor the assimilation model since it holds them up as the standard to which others should aspire. Segregation refers to the physical and social separation of categories of people. Until the early 1960's, the Jim Crow laws formally segregated hotels, restaurants, parks, buses and even drinking fountains. Some minorities, especially religious orders like Amish, they voluntarily segregated themselves. The most brutal form of racism is the genocide which is the systematic annihilation of one category of people by another. This happened during the course of history when the nazis exterminated more than 6 million Jewish man, woman, and children in what has become the Holocaust. Also in Cambodia between 1975 and 1980, Pol Pot's communist regime condemned to death 2million people for being able to speak any Western language and even individuals who wore eyeglasses, viewed as a symbol of capitalist culture.......

i found it in poor taste myself, but then again, I didn't know about this....
There is a long and distastful history of racist metaphor comparing black men to monkeys .
If that was what the cartoonist was trying to portray, then I would say he's a racist
and as far as Al Sharpton is concerned..
Sharpton IS a race pimp. yes he is. He has a need to be in the limelight, on the front page or on the news to get his racism "fix"

I agree this is very Racist...A Black Monkey attacking a White woman...
It has racial overtones to me....
Also in the cartoon/parody it mentions the stimulas bill, Anyone looking at this bill knows it took a jungle of Monkeys to write it...The Baboon Mentality...
In order for those to view it as Racial towards Obama, must already have deep rooted thoughts that he reminds them of a monkey... you know a chimp on their shoulder, or is that a chip?

Also in the cartoon/parody it mentions the stimulas bill, Anyone looking at this bill knows it took a jungle of Monkeys to write it. And yet, for all your (misspelled) criticisms, you have not offered anything as a viable alternative. You have not advanced one single idea that would create one single job. You haven't even managed to explain why, in your (all too briefly) considered opinion the provisions of the bill will not work, nor explain why you believe it will fail to create jobs as a legitimate criticism.

Honestly, when I saw the cartoon on the evening news, I never once gave it a thought that it was making fun of Obama. The cartoon depicts two policemen, one of them shooting a monkey. The monkey is full of bullet holes and lying on the ground in a pool of blood.
The caption reads:
"They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill."
If you are aware that Obama was the driving force behind the "Stimulus bill" just passed by Congress and signed by him just when the cartoon was published, and if you are aware that referring to black people as monkeys is one of the most well known and classic racial slurs against blacks, then how could you not see a connection between the monkey in the cartoon and Obama?
The only interpretation of this cartoon that I have been able to perceive is that it is portraying Obama as the monkey and that the police are killing Obama.
Is there any other possible credible interpretation? I still have not heard what it is.
Good satirical cartoons often have multiple connotations. Sometimes the author intentionally creates a cartoon with one connotation that is benign and another that is titillating.
I am struggling to find the benign connotation in this cartoon with the hope that it is there and I am just missing it.
If it isn't there, then I would say the guy who created this is not only sick, but a very lousy cartoonist. I don't see any humor or even any point to this cartoon other than to portray an ignorant racist idea. If he worked for me, I would fire him immediately.
