That's right, Governor Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas is going to Washington, having accepted an appointment as the Secretary of Health and Human Services.

I have an overall favorable view of Governor Sebelius. She was, in my view, a pretty good legislator and governor.

But, I'm not sure how her education and experience will serve her in her new position as H&HS Secretary. But then, I think that a lot about people in Washington. Although she has a history of being a strong proponent of education funding (which I suppose is within the purvue of Human Services), it would seem to make more sense to me to having someone with more experience in HEALTH and Human Services as the Secretary of that department. Perhaps at the administrative level, it doesn't really matter much if you are that well acquainted with the matters involved if you are good at making the department run.

Unfortunately, to me, this smells like more of the same kind of system of political reward, appointing people to a position as a reward for support rather than choosing someone based on their area of expertise, that we have always had. I hope she does well in the position, but I'm not sure she was among the best possible choices.

...If she paid her taxes, that would be a good start for this administration.

Better yours than mine, who was also in the running for that same job, after screwing up the HealthCare system here, royally! So why not reward him with a huge promotion?

It doesn't seem to have very much to do with proven abilities.

I rather like Kathleen Sebelius in general, but I do agree that the qualifications very likely are not right for the job.

But then look at Nepolitano and DHS!! Whew!! Talk about a MISMATCH!

Well, apparently she finally is going to do so:
Sebelius admits errors, pays $7,000 in back taxes
By ERICA WERNER, Associated Press Writer Erica Werner, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON – Health and Human Services nominee Kathleen Sebelius has corrected three years of tax returns and paid more than $7,000 in back taxes after finding "unintentional errors" — the latest tax troubles for an Obama administration nominee. The Kansas governor explained the changes to senators in a letter dated Tuesday that was obtained by The Associated Press. She said they involved charitable contributions, the sale of a home and business expenses.

She and her husband paid a total of $7,040 in back taxes and $878 in interest to amend returns from 2005-2007.

Several Obama administration nominees have been derailed by tax issues, notably the president's first nominee for HHS secretary, former Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle. He withdrew from consideration while apologizing for failing to pay $140,000 in taxes and interest.

Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., quickly issued a statement supporting Sebelius' nomination.

"Congress is going to need a strong partner at the Department of Health and Human Services to achieve comprehensive health reform this year, and we have that partner in Gov. Sebelius," Baucus said. "There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Gov. Sebelius has the political experience, determination, and bipartisan work ethic to get the job done with Congress this year. She's the right person for the job."

Sebelius is to appear Thursday before Baucus' committee, which will vote on sending her nomination to the full Senate. Sebelius testified Tuesday before the Senate's Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee before the tax issue became public, getting a friendly reception.

In her letter to Baucus and the top Finance Committee Republican, Sen. Chuck Grassley of Iowa, Sebelius wrote that the errors were discovered after she and her husband, Gary, a federal magistrate judge in Kansas, hired an accountant to review her returns in preparation for her confirmation hearing.

The accountant discovered these errors:

_Charitable contributions over $250 are supposed to include an acknowledgment letter from the charity in order for a deduction to be taken. Out of 49 charitable contributions made, three letters couldn't be found.

_Sebelius and her husband sold their home in 2006 and then took a mistaken deduction for mortgage interest.

_Insufficient documentation was found for some business expense deductions.

An administration official said Sebelius filed the amended returns before her nomination papers were sent to the Senate Finance Committee. Sebelius advised the committee of the mistakes, and senators requested an explanation, said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.

In a letter to Sebelius, Baucus and Grassley wrote that they'd reviewed the three years of amended returns and "no additional items were identified that needed to be addressed."

...Geez Capo... what is with these politicians? Is it just the Democrats, or just those that Obama runs with?

...They are all for creating a huge national debt by spending on anything and everything, but only if they are not paying for it... does anyone see a pattern here?

It's just a fad. All the coolest governments are doing it.

On the one hand, there will be LOTS of unpaid taxes that are getting collected.

On the other hand, there will be LOTS of fresh busybodies looking for something to do, and somebody to do it to.

Then when they're out of office, they'll all be wanting government pensions.

The music never stops...

Kind of a norm for this goings on from the Obama picks! Funny how the back taxes suddenly are found owed on the glorious day of announcement!

Who's next?

Nice to see a process in place, and actually being used, to find & fix problems. A rather nice change from the usual "sweep it under the carpet" approach most governments (past & present) use.

At this rate, Obama may actually pay off the national debt. Just keep nominating dems for office and collect the back taxes, interest and penalties that they owe. One thing does start to make sense though; I now see why dems are always ready to raise taxes. They don't plan to pay them.

I sincerely doubt she was picked for qualifications. BO has been filling the white house with muslims and the heads of the mexican gangs, so he may just be pulling her in as a "token".

From Kathleen Sebelius' biography, she was...

raised in a Roman Catholic family in Cincinnati, Ohio. She attended the Summit Country Day School in Cincinnati, followed by Trinity Washington University in Washington, D.C.

Now that Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius has voluntarily dipped and rolled herself in the growing ethics and bad public policy stench of the Obama Administration, upon her return to Kansas, as a disgraced Liberal, she will be totally unelectable in the future, much like Nixon advisers discovered.
