A man has been allegedly using Craig's List to find women who he then attacks, robs and most recently murdered. The most recent victim was a lovely 24 year old woman, who was trusting loving individual who didn't realize that there are truly terrible people in the world, and ended her life being shot to death by a man, who then walked calmly out of the hotel, while texting on his cell. Anyone have any thoughts on how to prevent something like this from occuring and also some way to catch this creep before he strikes again?

One of the articles about this attacker.

Ok, this is not the article I should have posted when I started this thread. The correct one is down the page some. Please don't judge the thread because of the wrong article being used as the example of this man's actions, please.

The problem can be reduced (but not eliminated) if people met in a group scenario first. Public place, bring a friend, that sorta thing.

Unfortunately, there's bad people everywhere.

(I imagine pro-gun folks would suggest she should have shot him, first? I dunno. Pro-gun folks confuse me.)

This has been happening since people have been meeting off the internet.

People need to use common sense when meeting a stranger....never met alone, don't give them your address, etc.

What was she doing meeting him at a hotel anyway??

I hope it makes women stop advertising "services" on the net...

My understanding is that he is targeting women who are offering body massage services. I don't claim to be any kind of mental health professional, but he is certainly targeting a specific group of women, that for obvious reasons, cannot meet in a public place. My personal reaction to this is:

1. Don't offer these services in this general area.

2. Don't meet anyone individually.

What the police could do is to place an ad, and hope this joker takes the bait and goes to the stakeout and they catch him.

These women were posting in the classifed ad part of Craig's list, offering a service.

This would be like placing an ad in the paper under the classified section, and offering services. So I guess women who post newspaper ads in the classified section are dumb blondes too?

From the article

“She was offering private dances on Craigslist,” Warwick Lt. Joseph Coffey tells the Herald.

The armed suspect, a white male with blond hair dressed in jeans and a dark jacket, tied up the woman with a plastic cord at 11:17 p.m. and attempted to rob her cash, Coffey said.

“The woman’s husband then came into the room and (the suspect) held him up too, but gave up and then fled,” the officer said. “The woman was not injured and nothing was taken.”

Private dances? Massages?

Sorry, but women who advertise these type of "services" are just asking for trouble.

No one deserves to be shot and killed for it, but they need to think just what type of person they are attracting with these types of ads.

Katie, who mentioned anything about "dumb blondes"?

If you are adverting these types of services any public place, you are asking for trouble.

Well, so much for letting women know that there is someone out there who is preying on them, and on to making the targets of the attacks the ones in the wrong again.

There is something sad in America when the persons committing the crimes are forgiven for their actions, because someone did something that in hindsight was obviously very stupid.

Edited to add:

I remember a time when rape victims were blamed for their rapes because of what they wore, or what they did. Let's make sure we go back to the time when the victims are the perpetrators.. yahoo.... bad girls... sheesh

This is what happens when you fail to completely read the articles you post. The one in my first post had the picture of the suspect, but was not the attack I was refering to. This one should be the attack I was typing about in the OP.

This is the attack I meant to post about. My bad.

Let's not criminalize the victim!

(Sarcasm, noted!)

It'd be silly to blame a person that doesn't wear a seatbelt for causing a crash...but, the damage done to the person could've been reduced had they worn a seatbelt.

That is....take appropriate precautions, to reduce risk without seriously comprimising your freedom.

From what this article states, Brisman went out of town alone frequently...

^^This was what I had heard about this morning that got my attention. I found an article on MSN this morning about it.

This guy apparently has been busy. An FBI profiler said that his behavior after shooting the young woamn indicates that he has been at this for a while, and that we are just now actually hearing about his activities.

I am not MF and I'm not criminalizing anything.

If you advertise these types of services, then you need to be prepared for the type of people that will respond.

Private dances? Massages??

Let me again say that I had not completely read the article I posted in the OP. That was my mistake and I apologize for posting that particular article. What got my attention this morning was the MSN article from the TODAY show where they were speaking about the young woman who was just offering massage services (you know.. body massage? not sex acts disguised as a 'service') There are people who just give massages.. ever been to a day spa? Why assume the worst about a young woman that friends and relatives said she was lovely young woman, who just trying to make some money, and perhaps help someone who is a bit stressed relax some. After all, wasn't that the reason people would get massages at the Spa? To relax from the stresses of their lives?

The connotation of advertising massages is sex. That doesn't mean that all who advertise are hookers in disguise, but those who are sincerely just looking to legitimately give massages and make extra money need to be very aware of this.

Uh Huh......

I mean by rights I can drive over to the ghetto at 2AM on Friday night and pull up to a bank on a main street, leave my truck running and walk up to the ATM, draw out a few hundred and stand under the light and count it.

Common sense tells me that would be a REAL stupid thing to do!!

CHICAGO (CBS) ?They're listed as "erotic services" on the popular Web site Craigslist, but Cook County sheriff's police say they're mostly a front for prostitution, and officers moved in, making 76 arrests.

For the last two years, the sheriff's department has been targeting online prostitution, and Craigslist in particular. The site carries more than 200 categories of classified ads, including erotic services.

Let's not criminalize the victim!

Unfortunately, we live amongst the evils of media, which we seldom escape. Even this news article brings out the victim as less than innocent:

The attractive model had a minor criminal past, with an arrest in June 2002 for stealing $3,763 worth of merchandise while working at Macy's.

Brisman, 26, who was battling an alcohol problem, made full restitution, said friends and law enforcement. She spent six days at Rikers Island after a 2006 arrest on an unspecified charge.

I didn't see anyone think the worst of her. And her death was a tragedy.
"This is a horrible tragedy," he said. "I hope other girls with stars in their eyes learn from this. She was open and trusting, but it led to her death."

Other friends said they didn't know Brisman was working as a masseuse or advertising online.

Apparently her photographer friend feels the same way.
Nobody but her and the killer will know what service was being negotiated....if I found out my daughter did that, she'd be in a heap of doo-doo. (It wouldn't ever happen with her, but I can only imagine)
