Are you concerned?
They brought up closing the border. People are wearing masks. A hundred some Mexicans have died of "swine flu-like" symptoms. The first US death was a 23 month old in Texas.
What ideas do you have?

Keep washing your hands before touching your eyes, nose or mouth. We now have four cases reported here in Phoenix...I'm taking a day off because I skipped dinner and slept for 14 hours straight, after having encountered someone that I think might have been suffering from some kind of flu and I've been sniffling and sneezing. I'm going to keep listening to my body - sleep and eat as it seems to requre and hope for the best.
I've been up for about three hours or so...I think it's time for a nap.

I don't really feel that concerned, but then I don't work outside in the public, either. There are some in my office panicking. I mean, how likely is it? When SARS happened, was everyone this much in an uproar?

Not particularly worried, myself, despite having been served at the coffee shop locally that had 2 of the first 6 confirmed cases in Canada. (I just got coffee...so the risk I faced was still pretty small.)
Canada has reasonable containment/control policies that were recently tested (and updated) as a result of the SARS outbreak.
Vaccinations are free & easily accessable, here. What's necessary in the states? (Fees? Insurance?)

Close the borders? It hasn't stopped millions of illegal aliens, how is it going to stop an airborne virus?
Or, do they have ways of stopping airflow too?
As Capo lives there, it'll be interesting to see what his opinion is and how/if he is affected at all, and what the Mexican government is doing (or not doing).
Personally, I am not the least worried, as I work from home and I spend a lot of time outdoors (I think it boosts my immune system as I rarely get sick, unlike those that work inside in offices). However, that being said, there are numerous "snowbirds" here that vacation in Mexico for months at a time that are due back. Yeah, they should be tested before leaving Mexico and again in Canada.

It is an engineered virus. The swine flu is a variant of the Spanish flu which was a bio-weapon in WWI.
The genome of the 1918 pandemic so-called "Spanish Flu" was recently intentionally resurrected. Because of that resurrection, the Avian Flu, and its vaccine, are now a US government-instigated threat to life - your life.
The Spanish Flu, which was not Spanish at all, was created in the US through an early bioweapons program and injected into healthy young men (i.e., 'soldiers') as the first mandatory vaccination in the military during WWI (also known as the "War to End Wars" and the "Great War"). The "Spanish Flu", which originated in Kansas on US Military bases, killed about 50 million people world-wide including about 650,000 Americans. It was one of the deadliest pandemics in modern history. It was also one of the most successful biological weapons ever created. ...and of course just a couple of months ago, the flu vaccine shipped to Europe contained live avian flu virus...
Now this new strain of the flu seems to have genetic material from avian, spanish/swine, and run of the mill flu. Coincidences?
I think we should not panic and certainly should not let the government inject us -- the government's experimentation on her citizens without disclosure is well documented -- or panic us.
To put things in perspective... Mexico City has what? 24 million people? It would be interesting to find what contacts/activities those who died had in common.

I will make sure that when I go to a store, I wipe the handles of a cart down first. There are schools shutting down here just in case.
Of course, I believe that if you have a bad immune system, you will be hit harder.

The Spanish Flu was an avian and not a swine flu, lacy, although H1N1 can infect pigs as well.
That said, influenza routinely cycles through pigs, humans and birds.
The important thing is to wash your hands.

No, I'd read about the CDC working feverishly to develop one, but they considered it would be a superhuman effort required to get it before the arrival of flu season - usually considered to be starting in the fall.
(edited to correct myself - I left out the 'starting' bit)

I am watching this..a little concerned ...but not ready to call it a possible pamdemic..as..
http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/disease/us_flu-related_deaths.htmQuestions & Answers Questions and Answers Regarding Estimating Deaths from Influenza in the United States How many people die from flu each year in the United States? The number of influenza-associated (i.e., flu-related) deaths varies from year to year because flu seasons often fluctuate in length and severity. CDC estimated that about 36,000 people died of flu-related causes each year, on average, during the 1990s in the United States. This figure includes people dying from complications of flu. This estimate came from a 2003 study published in the Journal of the American Medication Association (JAMA), which looked at the 1990-91 through the 1998-99 flu seasons [10]. Statistical modeling was used to estimate how many flu-related deaths occurred among people whose underlying cause of death on their death certificate was listed as a respiratory or circulatory disease. During these years, the number of estimated deaths ranged from 17,000 to 52,000. In 2009, CDC published additional estimates of flu-related deaths comparing different methods, including the methods used in the 2003 JAMA study. The seasons studied included the 1993-94 through the 2002-03 flu seasons [9]. Results from this study showed that during this time period, 36,171 flu-related deaths occurred per year, on average. The Flu Season In the Northern hemisphere, winter is the time for flu. The timing and duration of flu seasons vary. While flu outbreaks can happen as early as October, most of the time influenza activity peaks in January or later. During the past 26 flu seasons, months with the heaviest flu activity (peak months) occurred in November one season, December four seasons, January five seasons, February 12 seasons, and March four seasons.

There is no vaccination; however, Tamiflu and a couple of other anti-flu drugs are effective.

Just a note on the above - the deaths are usually the very old and the very young. One of the reasons for the high level of concern is the number of young and healthy adults who've succumbed...as well as the fact that it's out of season.
Not a lot of point in panicking though - keep washing your hands and if you're not feeling well, stay out of crowds...just in case. My roomie's been really sick - her boss told her to get to the doctor and get tested (she deals directly with the public) before she comes back to work. Wise man.

The IT director is out sick, but it's probably bronchitis. She doesn't want to go to the ER (her doctor's suggestion if her fever returns), because we're inundated here in NYC with people who think they have swine flu, because of the kids who do have it in Queens.

I read that the swine flu, much like the AIDS virus, was contracted through sex with animals. The Africans had sex with monkeys to make AIDS, now, not to be outdone, the Mexicans have decided to throw their own virus into the pot by having sex with pigs.
On a side note, the Asians tried having sex with birds to make a super bird flu, but it didnt work out so well.

WHO says swine flu moving toward pandemic level Associated Press - April 29, 2009 12:53 PM ET
GENEVA (AP) - The World Health Organization says the swine-flu outbreak is closer to becoming a pandemic.
The U.N. health agency is almost ready to raise its alert level from phase 4 to 5, but not quite. Phase 5 would indicate widespread human-to-human transmission. The highest phase on the scale is 6, which would indicate a full-scale pandemic.
The WHO flu chief says there's no sign the virus is slowing down. The agency's emergency committee has been meeting to discuss the virus in Geneva.
Elsewhere, a school in Britain has closed after a 12-year-old was found to have the disease. There are five confirmed cases in Britain, three in Germany, one in Austria and ten in Spain.
Egypt has begun slaughtering all pigs in the country. And the central African nation of Gabon has joined the list of countries banning port imports, despite assurances from health experts that swine flu is not related to eating pork. http://www.kmph.com/Global/story.asp?S=10271591
Here is a link with more in-depth reporting:
U.S. Swine Flu Cases
Initially, it was reported that the young and old were not the ones that were susceptible to this, but those over 25 and middle-age, which they were surprised at. However, I don't know if that has changed.

I'm not worried about it, but my daughter has been sick for 2 weeks. She's on antibiotics, and I doubt it has anything to do with swine flu. But, I tell ya....if you go to a store now days, coughing. people MOVE away.

It appears that a 4-year-old boy that contracted swine flu in Veracruz is considered "patient zero." Goshdarned pervy pigs hitting on 4 year olds!
