I am troubled by this appointment, in a number of ways. Much of that is defined herein. But there's more to it as well. New Haven, CT firefighters being one of several issues causing great concern.

What's your opinion on the Sotomayor appointment?

Sotomayor — Obama’s Latino Strategy Revealed

Tuesday, May 26, 2009 9:50 AM

A large crossover of Hispanic voters to the GOP in the 2004 election cost John Kerry the presidency and gave George W. Bush a second term. While McCain received just 31 percent in 2008, Bush snagged an amazing 44 percent of the Hispanic vote in 2004.

Obama can't let that happen again if he wants to remain in the White House.

This is why he is not only selecting Sotomayor, but also moving aggressively on issues such as giving amnesty to illegal aliens. Estimates place the number of illegal aliens in the nation at over 12 million.

Obama has stated he wants to put them on the "path to citizenship" as soon as he can — and he has promised legislation this year that will make that happen.

He wants to not only win over Latino voters with such a move, but also create a new supermajority for the Democratic voters.

Even if his plans to help illegals get citizenship yields 500,000 new voters by 2012, he and his party will likely have a lock on the White House for another term. But in all likelihood, he can add millions of new Hispanic voters to the election rolls over the next few years.

For the moment Senate Republicans need to tread carefully in attacking Sotomayor, the first Latino Supreme Court nominee. Attacks on her will redound in Obama’s favor, increasing his chances to win in 2012.

As liberal as she is, save a major scandal, Republicans will likely need to hold their noses and avoid a street brawl over her nomination.

Instead, Republicans need a strategy to counter Obama’s, which is viewed positively by the Hispanic vote. Hispanics are key for Obama and the Democrats, but they are also key for the Republicans — if they want to avoid being a minority party for a generation.

I wonder if that was Bush sr. thinking when he gave her the nod in the first place way back when.

The Senate Republicans are painted into a corner as many of them have voted not only once but twice for Judge Sotomayor.

In 1998, Senate Judiciary Republicans who voted for Sotomayor were: Richard Lugar, Susan Collins, Thad Cochran, Olympia Snowe, Judd Gregg, Arlen Spector (now a Democrat), Orrin Hatch and Bob Bennett all voted for Sotomayor. She passed the full Senate 67-29.

Not that we have much to say about it, but several things about her and this appointment are a bit uncomfortable to me.

She's made questionable public statements before for one thing, at least bordering on racially-motivated. I don't think there's any room in government to tolerate any hint of things like that.

And as mentioned before, her decision previously regarding the New Haven Firefighters matter, seemed calloused and dismissive, at best. Yet ironically it's before the Supreme Court to be heard now.

I'm curious how her appointment strikes other members of the highest court in the land. But I haven't heard so far.

This isn't even news that matters. It's not like anyone couldn't/shouldn't have known what was coming when bamasiah got his shot at the court!! To the victor goes the spoils!!

Pissed about it??...Thank lil Bush & the chickenhawks!! Thank Johnny Mac for his brilliant VP choice and his slumber party of a campaign.

Besides, at worst it's just a push. Any way you slice and dice it, it's still one lib vote replacing another lib vote. Nothing that counts for anything changes...

And at least he's not trying to fake anyone out with a Harriet Miers nomination!!...Ummmmm.....Well, I don't think so...

Well, if you read post #1, (I know, not likely, but wishful thinking nonetheless), then its quite clear she is part of a vast reelection strategy, at the very least.

Is that really the best way to select members of the Supreme Court?

She's an experienced, highly educated jurist. She's had litigation experience, trial judge as well as appellate experience.

The day she was announced, I was listening to a call-in program on my local NPR station. A woman called in who was an assisting attorney (the one who prepares the briefs, but does not litigate) on a case before the appellate court. This attorney said that Sotomayor's questioning of both parties was thorough, pragmatic and undoctrinaire. She indicated she was impressed with Sotomayor's keen and facile mind, how well-prepared she was and her knowledge of some of the more arcane areas of the law.

For the next 20 to 30 years.

And the other elderly liberal justices are bound to retire or pass away eventually. It's entirely possible that Obama can end up appointing up to 3 justices during his first term.

Just look at the current court: the only people who are age 60 and under are Bush Jr.'s two nominees plus Clarence Thomas. There are four people in their 70s and one in their 80s. It's possible that the "balance of power" can be cemented for the next several decades.

As it stands, Scalia is the sole "conservative" above the average age (currently, 69) on the court. (The other three are age 60 and below.)

The "swing" vote, Kennedy (technically, "conservative with some liberal notions"), is also in his 70s.

The four "liberals" are 70, 76, and 89 (!!!).

If Obama manages to get a second term (and make no mistake: sitting presidents start from a HUGE advantage...), it's possible that up to six seats could be appointed by Democrats.

But blaming it all on Bush and McCain...? No. The last two elections was a general rejection of the hard-right (pro-corporate) swing of the Republicans. The two hard-right factions within the party that DO appeal to large segments (the pro-fundamentalist and pro-small-government factions) were shown to be powerless during the six years of unrestricted Republican control.

Or she could just be a good judge that Obama believed would be acceptable enough to not cost him political capital this early in his term of office.

Once Franken wins the court battle, the Democrats will have enough votes to override a filibuster. THEN they can break out the radical nominees.

Jeff Sessions has all but conceded that Sotomayor will be approved. While he said that Judge Sotomayor's record will be examined thoroughly, he indicated that Republicans would not filibuster her nomination. They would lose too many from their own rank and file that voted twice to confirm her first to the federal trial court and then to the appellate court.

I'm disappointed... she's not very attractive.

The strategy is clear - Obama wants men to lose their sexual appetites... It's all part of the feminization of America...

I wonder how many Republicans in the Senate still believe in the "nuclear option"? How many of the 48 Republicans who backed the "nuclear options" in 2005 are still in office? (Leaving out the 7 Republicans in the "Gang of 14," of course.)

Sessions is usually pretty close to on-target, and I'm pretty sure she will be confirmed too.

But not without significant controversy. She does tend to raise the red flags.

Among other issues it seems she is a little prejudiced.

No, at the very least, she is a competent jurist who brings a unique perspective to the court. Latino voters are NOT going to vote for Obama for reelection in 3-1/2 years just because he put an Hispanic on the court.

It is such BS to continually imply that apparently everyone except old white men supports someone only because they look like them.

Those who can't help but protest that her past racial commentary has been irrelevant, or insignificant, try this version on for size.

"I would hope that a wise White Man with the richness of his experience and judgment would more often than not reach a better conclusion, than a Latina Female".

Such a statement would bring about instant rejection of the individual who made it!

I would suggest you are attempting to apply a double-standard. I don't agree with this version, but I certainly don't agree with her version either. Neither is any less cause for concern. In a place like the Supreme Court, there is no room for free passes.

I for one, am very tired of racism, when applied in the reverse, being defended as appropriate, because of who is doing it. Racism is racism, it is wrong, no matter how you slice it!

To appoint someone as the ultimate in better judgment, who entertains that kind of mindset, is equally wrong.

In fact, when Sotomayor made the "wise Latina" remark, she was specifically discussing the importance of judicial diversity in determining "race and sex discrimination cases."

.

...As the economy slides further downhill, as the lifestyle of most every American diminishes with uncontrolled national and public debt, when unemployment continues to rise for the next three years, I don't think it matters if the Republicans run Daffy Duck, the Democrats and especially Obama will be out of a job.

...Oddly enough, it is the fault of Congress, not the President, but as we have all seen, the President is the fall guy for the party. On the other hand, Obama is failing as head of the Executive branch in carrying out the laws, while most all of his campaign promises are now the wash water thrown out the window with the baby.

...As well, if the Libertarians get their heads out of their .... and produce some viable local candidates, they could very well pick up some House seats in 2010 and 2012.
