Okay swabbies, land lubbers, and the rest of you...
CVN-65 Enterprise is nearing her 50th birthday afloat, so has reached the end of her service life.
The previous aircraft carrier Enterprise, CV-6, was a part of the mortal blow that sunk four Japanese aircraft carriers at the Battle of Midway which turned WWII in the Pacific in favor of the Alllies.
Tell your Representatives, Senators, and who ever will listen that great capital ships like aircraft carriers should bear the names of great warships of the past like Saratoga, Lexington, Yorktown, and not be named after living politicians.
In order to avoid this, Google the online petition to name CVN-80 Enterprise.
I will not post this link, unless request, to avoid appear like a spammer.
Anchor's aweigh my boys, fair winds, and God's speed!

ok...so you are but your not soliciting really!
Anyways...There's been war ships named after politicians since the 1700's. Even Martha Washington had a merchant sloop named after her:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_military_vessels_named_after_living_Americans
adding...
The list is incomplete, for they left out the USS John F.Kennedy.

I'm not saying save CVN-65 Enterprise, but name a new CVN Enterprise after she's decommissioned.
The CVN-65 has EIGHT nuclear reactors and is built on a Forrestal arranged hull.
She's an old dog that needs to be cleaned up and made a museum somewhere...assuming that the U.S. can even afford to clean her up with all the toxics on her.
BTW I used to work for NNS and my best girl is an ex-JFK sailor. I do know a few things about Hornets' nests!

The USS Constitution would be nice for one of the names, but we'd have to retire the oldest surviving ship in the fleet (a frigate from the 1700s).
The USS Constellation was retired in 2003, so there's another good name.
The USS United States hasn't been officially used since the War of 1812. (Several ships almost got the name, but were canceled or renamed.)
The Lexington, Yorktown, Saratoga, Wasp and Hornet all deserve another go.

Lexington and Yorktown were both names of Ticonderoga Class cruiders during there last incarnation.
Politicians, states, and cities became names of capital ships ( SSNs, SSBNs, SSGNs, and CVNs) since "fish and history don't vote".
Back in the day, you knew if the Sara, Indy, Connie, or Big E was coming, you were out of trouble and the enemy was in the world of hurt.
Those names are to the USN what Bear and Eagle are to the USCG!

Shoot, even the Midway (sitting at the pier in San Diego) deserves another go-around. Naming the ships after famous carrier battles would be nice.

From this site below, there will be a whole fleet of carriers made as The Gerald R Ford class.
The US Navy's programme CVN 21 for the future generation aircraft carrier programme was previously known as the CVN(X) programme. In January 2007, The US Navy announced that the new class would be called the Gerald R Ford Class. The first two ships, Gerald R Ford (CVN 78) and CVN 79, will be commissioned in 2015 and 2019 and further ships of the class will enter service at intervals of five years. A total of ten Ford class carriers are planned with construction continuing to 2058.
CVN 78 will replace USS Enterprise (CVN 65) which entered service in 1961 and will approach the end of operational life by 2015. The total acquisition cost of the CVN 21 is expected to be $11.7bn. http://www.naval-technology.com/projects/cvn-21/

I spent 14 months in the worst job imaginable working on the CVN(X) at NNS.
That place was Career Killer on the James River!

I like your concept of naming US naval warships with the names of prior vessels of war that honorably served in harms way.
Lets add each and every ship that you named to the fleet in addition to the warships named after American Presidents.
We need lots of US naval warships.
Let's build them around the clock and keep launching them, not just to fly the flag on goodwill tours, but to put them in harms way to effect regime changes where the UN Declaration of Human Rights is a myth and not the law of the land.
Collect a list of all of the nations that need a regime change, assess them all militarily, and put them on an attack list from the weakest to the strongest; then lets take out the weak ones first.

I would rather they were named after people like Marine Cpl. Jason Dunham then old Presidents or warships of yesterday.
The Navy announced last year it would name a destroyer after Marine Cpl. Jason Dunham, who used his helmet and body to cover a grenade in Iraq on April 14, 2004, protecting members of his platoon from the bulk of the blast, according to the Department of Defense's "Heroes in the War on Terror" website. Dunham died from his injuries eight days later and in 2006 received a Medal of Honor for his actions. The USS Jason Dunham is expected to be commissioned in 2010.

There is another Budo... A guided-missile destroyer is being named after Navy SEAL Lt. Michael Murphy. Only sailors or Marines are eligible and over 1000 naval vessels have been named after fallen heroes.

The answer to Jihad is Crusade But Crusade does not equal Genocide. And that's what you all too often advocate.
And a 1000-ship Navy (or more)? Not even Reagan attempted that, and he padded the registry up to 600 by using outdated and obsolete vessels.
