(CNN) -- Former "Manson Family" member Susan Atkins, who stabbed actress Sharon Tate to death more than 40 years ago and now is terminally ill, was denied parole Wednesday, prison officials said.
Susan Atkins, shown here after her indictment in the Manson murders, was denied parole again Wednesday.

The parole hearing was the 13th for Atkins, 61, who is battling terminal brain cancer. Held at the Central California Women's Facility in Chowchilla, California, the hearing stretched to more than nine hours.

The panel set another hearing for Atkins in three years, said Michele Kane, spokeswoman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Atkins was 21 when she and other followers of Charles Manson participated in a two-night rampage that left seven people dead and terrorized the city of Los Angeles in August 1969. She and the others -- Manson, Leslie Van Houten, Patricia Krenwinkel and Charles "Tex" Watson -- were initially sentenced to death in the slayings of five people, including Tate, and two additional deaths the following night.

Their sentences were automatically commuted to life in prison when the Supreme Court struck down the nation's death penalty laws in 1972.

By her own admission, Atkins, known as Sadie Mae Glutz within the Manson family, held Tate down as she pleaded for mercy, and stabbed the actress 16 times. Tate was eight months pregnant. In a 1993 parole board hearing, Atkins said Tate "asked me to let her baby live. ... I told her I didn't have any mercy on her."
for the denial

The Supreme Court thought the death penalty was cruel.

Atkins, who is near death and who slept through most of her hearing, was originally sentenced to death. As a result of the ruling of the California Supreme Court in People v. Anderson, her sentence was commuted to life in prison.

I told her I didn't have any mercy on her.

Yet expects the courts and public to give her just that .... "I'm sick, let me out and I'll be a good girl ...." .... whatever ....

Let them all rot in prison ....

I agree, LB.
Sad thing is, they probably have it pretty good where they are.
Except for freedom to come and go, and they took that away from those other people.

Good thing that she, unlike that terrorist Al-Megrahi, is getting what she deserves. Sometimes our justice system really makes me proud.

All it does is make the state of California continue to pay her medical bills. Does she really appear to be a threat to anyone anymore?

I agree with that statement, 100% but being she has been incarcerated for 40 years, Its doubtful she will be able to support herself. Therefor, the state of California will most likely still pay her medical bills. Also, she may not be a threat to anyone, but there are crazy people on the streets who may bring her harm because of what she has done.

Dying, Paralyzed Amputee Susan Atkins Denied Parole

Damn, I had to look at her picture. I did not know she had an amputated leg and was paralyzed. The above link said she has had good behavior while in prison. Its sad that she fell under the spell of Charles Manson. The man looked and acted like a freak. I dont understand how he was able to get to his followers.

Leslie Van Houten-- I know this is old, but...

I did see LJs point, but Arie made a very good one also.
Would she still receive treatments, or become full ward of family...bills and all?

If they had to pay her bills, will they still take her?

I saw the news tonight showing her lying on the gurney at her hearing. By the looks of her, she won't be around much longer.

I always wondered about that too. In my humble opinion, Charles Manson has always been overrated. As gruesome as his crimes were, for example, he was practically a saint when compared to Adolfo Constanzo.

Adolfo Constanzo

I reserve my sympathy for Manson's victims, of course. Whatever their motivations, Atkins and the other members of his family were educated, intelligent who chose to follow him into madness.

Unless she has some hidden stash of money waiting for her, if she's released the cost for medical care will just shift from state to federal government (Medicare/Medicaid). So, either way, taxpayers will pay her bills no matter what.

The parole board shoud respond to her in Atkins' own wordsl I told her I didn't have any mercy on her.

I wonder how Atkins feels as she lie helpflessly in a bed, knowing she is going to die and asking for mercy? Sounds like what her victime went through.

Sometimes what goes around, comes around.

Shes been married to her lawyer for 21 yrs. How many lawyers do you know that are destitute?

Atkins' own wordsl I told her I didn't have any mercy on her.

You sure are the fortunate one, all murdering aside of course, not to have words you spoke as a foolish, brain-washed, drug riddled 21 yr old kid haunt you for the next 40 yrs.

Atkins was sentenced to death. I am opposed to the death penalty anyway, so I don't mind that it was overturned, but I am a believer in life without parole, which was the only commutation she should have received. There would have been no commutation from the original sentence, had it been found to be constitutional. She may have been only a "foolish, brain-washed, drug riddled 21 yr old kid," in 1969, but she directly participated in the cold-blooded murders of 9 people in three separate instances. I think it is enough mercy for her that she has been allowed to become a Christian and a Catholic, and will be allowed to die of natural causes.

I'm with Owl on this one. He wrote my feelings accurately enough. When one does not receive the death penalty and gets life without possibility of parole, I don't believe this needs to be overturned.
