Homeless people who struggle the most with disabilities and addictions are remaining on the streets, while many others are successfully entering transitional housing, a regional homeless expert said Thursday.

The Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition census, conducted by 500 volunteers in late January, found a 17 percent increase in the homeless population in Clark County this year — 13,338 people compared to 11,417 in 2007, when the last survey was conducted.

“What the data is showing is we have an increase in chronically homeless people,” said Shannon West, coalition regional homeless services coordinator. “Those on the streets, they are the folks with the most disabilities, most mentally ill, most addicted, the ones most struggling with those barriers.”

Winter is closing upon us. The holidays are coming up.
This is the most stressful time for the homeless and the programs that offer help.
You can make a difference where it truly counts.

Tis the season for giving.
Give, money, food, warm clothes, these are needed most. If all you have is time, they won't turn that down either.

I'm running a food drive in my school for two different counties.
Every little bit helps.

...If they are addicted, what are they addicted to and how are they receiving whatever these addictions are?

...It is not just the holidays, as that is a man created time for giving (capitalists), but it is every day for the homeless. It would suck to have to wait a whole year for something to eat.

...I am all for giving a hand up and for those that just post siht to feel or look good, you do have an extra 12 square feet of floor space that would keep at least one homeless person warm for 8 hours, the night. A spot on your unheated porch is better than the hazards of the streets.

...It is not just the holidays

Very true SG.Its nice that people actually consider giving help over the holidays but if one doesnt consider it all year around its mostly forgotten.
I was surprised last night when we only fed 40 homeless men at the shelter in a churches basement in Madison.
When the days get shorter and colder the numbers are usually over 125.
The coordinator did tell us that he is expecting nearly 200 next month so be prepared to bring much more food.
He also asked me if I had brought anymore farm fresh eggs because the guys darn near went to drawing straws in order ro see who got one for breakfast.
Until I get the varmint trapped thats been feeding on our layers I could only bring two dozen last night.

... I bet they did fight over farm fresh eggs!

...We used to have a problem with raccoons, where all they do is take the heart and leave the rest. What worked best, was that hot wire you have for the horses.

...But yes, the homeless need a meal 365 days out of the year.

,

I agree...but we do drives all year round. Food, children's items, whatever it may be. Helping a little bit is better than nothing.

And if this quote was directed at me...I didn't feel the need to explain all of the year round drives that the school participates in for the county. I was just addressing the OP.

...It was not intended for any specific person in the audience, but since you mentioned it, when you are paid to do this, as in one's employment, is that really doing something personally?

...Nevertheless, it all helps.

I get paid to set it up in the school because I happen to work here. I agree. But, I personally participate in all of the drives that go on. So, can I ask you a question? What is the difference in donating things in my school or driving it to a church or other area. Would that make it better because I don't happen to work in the building?

I think the point being made was - would "you" (general, not personal) do this exact same thing if "you" were not being paid to do so?

I would and have always done so. I was brought up in a family where it was a big part of our lives through our church. I grew up watching my mother donate and run drives all year long. When I left home and went to college, I continued what my parents had taught me. I'm not saying this to have anyone say, "good for you". I'm just explaining myself and answering the question. I do not need to be paid to care about others.

...With the millions upon millions that "care about others," I wonder why there is a growing population of homeless people.

...Baffling; to say the least.

It is baffling. And, it is extremely sad.
I wish there was an answer. One mass solution. There isn't though.

Whatever can be done should be, and SG is correct...people should be encouraged to help in little ways all year round. We need to appreciate the things we have and not take for granted even the littlest things...like heat, or a bed or a drink of water.

I'm done now...just my opinion.

Number of NYC Homeless Families Hits Modern-Day Record
Right before the holidays, the Coalition released alarming new public data showing that, at the end of November, there were 9,720 homeless families sleeping in New York City municipal shelters – the highest number since modern homeless began nearly three decades ago. The Coalition's policy brief can be found here.

This tragic milestone was reached as New York Governor David Paterson is proposing drastic cutbacks in homelessness prevention and housing programs – a summary of the Governor's misguided proposal to cut more than $11 million in funding for critical homeless programs can be found here.
Link And it will be even worse this time around. Ill be posting different articles through out this thread. For no other reason to them to shed light on the subject.

With classes back on, I can only give two nights a week every other week, at the program, where I do over nights. We go in at 5:30pm to get dinner ready and stay til after breakfast. But I do try and drop in the day house as often as I can. I do not get paid for my time. Regardless, paid or not, are noble in your efforts Angel. You and anyone that contributes in a positive way to this problem are real hero. Don't let the mumbling out of the asses of others make you think any less.

My Anne is in a knitting club, or something like that. They are have been making blankets since July. And other church members have been making quilts.

There is a big difference between being willing to lend a hand or contribute in some way and opening your home to strangers.

Your constant repetition of this ignorant inappropriate corollary just demonstrates to what lengths you will go to try to imply someone else is not doing their part. This thread was started to highlight a need. Thank you, for highlighting the need for education of assholes as to what reality is.

Being willing and doing, no matter what the rewards may be for the individuals, are two different things where I come from.

Recession delivers a double blow to many charities

NEW YORK — For many social-service charities across America, the recession has delivered a staggering one-two punch. Sharp drops in donations and investment income have been coupled by soaring demand for their services.

The casualties so far include countless needy clients losing assistance and thousands of nonprofit workers who’ve been laid off. Some local charities have shut down; even many of the largest nationwide operations have made painful cutbacks in staff, spending and programs.

“Nonprofits are generally at the whim of the economy … but we’ve never seen anything like this,” says the Rev. Larry Snyder, president of Catholic Charities USA. “Increasing numbers of our own volunteers and employees have been forced to become clients of our services.”

The cutbacks are forcing charities to rethink how they operate and make changes that are likely to outlive the recession. Nonprofits, like regular businesses, are learning to do more with less. Those that survive will emerge more efficient.

“It gives you a mindset to be more creative,” American Heart Association CEO Nancy Brown says. “We’re thinking even better and more innovatively than we were 10 months ago.”

Numbers help illustrate the magnitude of the challenges.

Giving to social-service charities fell by 12.7 percent in 2008, according to the Giving USA Foundation, and there’s been little evidence of a resurgence so far this year. Simultaneously, many state and local governments are cutting back on funding for nonprofits or delaying payments as they struggle to assemble their budgets.

That double hit to charities’ revenue comes at a time when the national poverty rate has reached an 11-year high of 13.2 percent.

Nonprofit officials hope giving levels will rise once the recession ends, but for now many are thinking hard about how to use their dwindling resources.

“We can’t be in recession — there are too many people relying on us,” Brown says.

I make a donation every month when money is taken out of my check in the form of taxes. Well, dont part of my forced donation go to welfare and things for the poor? Thats all I plan to do this year. Same as the past and will continue into the future. Well, last year I did donate my mothers cloths to 2 different nursing homes and to the battered womens shelter. Some of her furniture went to W.O.O.L.F. (Walfare of our furry friends)Its for homeless animals. It can be sold at yard sales to help raise money. My mother was very active there.

It matters not to me.

BRAVO You so rock.

Forced donations?
I and Millions pay their taxes, what you like to call force donations, and STILL give more, whether its time, food, monies, or clothing. If you feel like you've done enough then you've done enough. There is no reason to put yourself out or risk it at lease to help others. What's the term, cutting off your nose to spite your face? Or something like that.

Kevin's Story
Kevin was a smart funny kid with ideas. And one day he wanted me to make him a giant mitten so little by little over years I knitted him a giant mitten. Kevin grew up to be a fine young man helpful and considerate of others. He volunteered in helping the homeless and helping troubled teens. This he did quietly and even his family knew little if anything about it until after his death in the back seat of a car that had a head on collision with a van when he was 25 years old.

He was a lot more too. He wrote poetry, wanted to work in the music industry after finding out he didn’t have what it took to have his own band. He loved life and his friends.

Towards the end of the Clinton years....

Does Obama get to use that administration as an excuse/crutch too?
