OSLO – President Barack Obama won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday in a stunning decision designed to encourage his initiatives to reduce nuclear arms, ease tensions with the Muslim world and stress diplomacy and cooperation rather than unilateralism.
Nobel observers were shocked by the unexpected choice so early in the Obama presidency, which began less than two weeks before the Feb. 1 nomination deadline.
White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Obama woke up to the news a little before 6 a.m. EDT. The White House had no immediate comment on the announcement, which took the administration by surprise.
"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," Jagland said. That's a hell of a lot more people then the 97% of the black votes huh?
The award appeared to be a slap at Bush from a committee that harshly criticized Obama's predecessor for his largely unilateral military action in the wake of the Sept. 11 terror attacks. The Nobel committee praised Obama's creation of "a new climate in international politics" and said he had returned multilateral diplomacy and institutions like the U.N. to the center of the world stage. Bushy Jr. would make Mussolini look like a peace loving hippie.
"The exciting and important thing about this prize is that it's given to someone ... who has the power to contribute to peace," Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg said.
Obama is the third sitting U.S. president to win the award: President Theodore Roosevelt won in 1906 and President Woodrow Wilson was awarded the prize in 1919.
Wilson received the prize for his role in founding the League of Nations, the hopeful but ultimately failed precursor to the contemporary United Nations. Link Now this actually mean little in the grand scoop of things. But I'm betting it is really gonna piss of the right winger nut cases something fierce. Boooo Olympics, YAY America failed, and all.

All over the net, around the world, he is being made fun of now. That's old news. The NEW news is that he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. You don't like their choice, get yourself appointed to administer a multimillion dollar award fund.
I think it's great, and WILL make many people in the world who may have been sitting on the fence look at him with a respect which he deserves.

"The exciting and important thing about this prize is that it's given to someone ... who has the power to contribute to peace," Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg said. So why hasn't he pulled the troops out of the Middle East and brought them home? Why is there a "decision" to be made with regards to sending more? Seems like the decision should be easy, after this prize. Just bring them home.
How one can win a Nobel PEACE Prize while involved in two wars, is beyond ironic.

Hope comes from "doing" and action, not giving lip-service to.
There are many that actually have done a lot of work (think Mother Teresa) that have been awarded this prize and were extremely deserving of it.
They have made a mockery of this prize.

The award appeared to be a slap at Bush from a committee that harshly criticized Obama's predecessor for his largely unilateral military action in the wake of the Sept. 11 terror attacks. This was exactly how I interpreted it, and from what I've read, seems to be the rationale behind it (especially since he had to have been nominated by February 1, when he'd had less than a month to do anything in office).
I think the intent is obvious - to encourage the USA to continue to abandon the tactics of Dubya, Cheney and Rumsfeld. Without the unilateral attack on Iraq we'd only be in a single war, and quite possibly actually out of that one by now. The biggest single strategic mistake made by Germany in WW II was to fight two wars - one to the west, one to the east. I think the decision to divert from Afghanistan to attack Iraq was a mind-blowing one. I've never heard anyone, not even the Nobel Peace Prize Committee, saying we shouldn't have gone into Afghanistan - pretty much everyone supported us and were willing to fight alongside us there. We lost a huge amount of support and good will by attacking Iraq.
I think this award is sort of a welcome back from the many countries we slapped in the face when we expected them to act like our vassal nations...
JMHO as usual.

She ran her hospices... That is the whole point - she DID something. Whether you agree with HOW she did it, she actually did something. She didn't give lip service to a vision, while being involved in two wars, she actually gave her time and energy to her cause.
But there are many others on that list, that have done far more than Obama has, and probably many more that were nominated that deserved it more than he did.
-------
Maybe Obama should check with the Nobel Peace Prize committee with regards to his decision on whether to send more troops to the Middle East or not.

That is the whole point - she DID something. She sure did. Barbaric quality care. No pain killers. Communal toilets. No visitors from family or friends allowed. Cots no better than straw pads. Reused and unsterilized needles. They excuse was they were dying anyway. Garbage care for the dying to embellish suffering. And she paid plenty of lip service to folks who donated lots of money, most of which was used to promote the church, little went to the actual dying. She should have gotten the Ignoble Torture Prize.
All that is off topic. Back to our regularly scheduled bickering.

Mother Teresa lived a life of filth by choice in order to help people...if anyone was more deserving of the Nobel Piece Prize...this woman was!

The best part about him winning this award is the same reason I liked to see Al Gore win one. It really gets their opposition's panties in a bunch.

Based on the criteria that you only need "vision" to win this kind of (formerly) prestigious award.....
We can now eliminate the huge expense of the Olympics. After all, they only really need "vision" - they don't actually have to do anything!
Any and all awards based on performance can be eliminated - as, after all, you only need "vision".
So, every single one of us can win an Olympic medal, or the Nobel Peace Prize, or the Nobel Pulitzer Prize. All that is required, is nomination, and "vision".
You don't actually have to do anything tangible, (and in fact, you can be doing something completely opposite to the perception of the award - ie being involved in two wars while winning the Peace prize) you just have to have "vision"!

I have to admit, I'm not exactly fond of the guy. But seeing people attack the award for political reasons kind of makes me laugh a little.

Well, he won for political reasons, so, I guess, he can be attacked for same
You may laugh that he is attacked for political reasons, but others are laughing that he won for those same reasons - it is all in perception. You may think he is being "attacked" when in fact, others may be finding humor (more like irony) in the winning of the award.

It can now be said authoritatively that the Nobel Peace Prize has been devalued to the status of a mere door prize along the lines of "Praise and honors for the nonparticipants!"
The deadline for Nobel Peace Prize nominations came more or less two weeks into the Obama Presidency; whoever submitted the Obama nomination should be arrested for perjury and mail fraud.
Now we can not only add the Olympic symbol to Barrack Obama's tin foil hat, but it sad to confirm that we can now also endow the Obama characature with a Peace Prize medalion for the great accomplishment of having been in power for about two weeks, excluding the period from the time he flubbed his inauguration where he failed to take the Presidential oath, until the time the Chief Justice sua sponte had to re-administer the oath of office as President of the United States of America -- tardy but correctly -- to the ObamaMessiah in the White House Map Room the next day.
An adoring world now looks to Obama to all by himself discover a cure for Aids and Cancer in his spare time when he is not running the printing presses around the clock in order to churn out worthless American dollars that will debase the currency.
The Premier Precision Thinker's viewpoint.
