Honored physician cares for the needy — whether they can pay or not
From Associated Press
MIAMI - Dr. Pedro Jose Greer stands in a cool, dim operating room at Miami's Mercy Hospital, looking at a glowing image of a patient's digestive system on a flat-screen TV.
Greer is a gastroenterologist, and the patient lying on the treatment table has a potentially dangerous cauliflower-like growth on the lining of her colon. The patient's name is Nora Turcios, a 45-year-old woman with a family history of cancer.
"That's a polyp right there," Greer says, more to himself than any of the three nurses in the room. During the 15-minute-long colonoscopy, he snips off part of the mass for a cancer biopsy and then reviews Turcios' paperwork. rest of story
In another thread, someone made a comment in reference to doctors not working for free.
This is one doctor who truly represents the "Hippocratic Oath".

I think maybe alot of people arent aware of our doctors that will accomodate people that havent insurance. They might not be as gracious as Dr Joe and work for free but will keep the costs as low as possible if they know you havent an insurance policy to pay for it.

Exactly, Jankia. Sad the thread has received absolutely no feedback - but then, I guess it's too positive

...Actually, there are a lot of Doctors that give free help, as with the Shriner's hospitals and even Dr. Oz is out there.
Dr. Oz
Association clinics treated 3.5 million patients in 2008. With the economic downturn and job losses that cut medical insurance for many, those same clinics expect to see 8 million patients this year, Lamoureux said.

This week, the U.S. Census Bureau announced that one in three Harris County adults lacks health insurance. Well, that would include me...
...and they estimate that 30% of Houston inhabitants are illegal...

Working with the Clinton administration on health care was another task, though he says it didn't go well.
He declined a spot on the health care reform team because it would mean a move to Washington for him, his wife and their two children, but he agreed to serve on a Presidential Health Professional Review Group that was charged with studying policy.
"I gradually realized my presence there would have no impact," Greer later wrote. "Too often the most critical facts never made it to the discussion table because the seats around the table were taken up by influence and money."
Dismayed that "the cards were stacked in favor of the HMOs and the for-profits," he quit. And the experience has kept him from aiding the Obama administration during the current health reform debate.
"I stay out of politics," he says flatly.
Even today, even after receiving the Medal of Freedom from the president in August, Greer doesn't mince words when talking about insurance companies and the impact they have had on U.S. health care.
"I do get outraged," he says. "Is it acceptable when an insurance company refuses someone for a pre-existing condition? Where in hell is that acceptable? Hell is going to be filled with insurance people. I hope they enjoy all the money they're making."
A true humanitarian. How unfortunate that he was so disillusioned and couldn't make a difference at the top levels.
Fortunately, he is able to make a difference where it really counts.

Lacy: "This week, the U.S. Census Bureau announced that one in three Harris County adults lacks health insurance." ...Having learned to be skeptical with government reports and such, lack of health insurance has little to do with lack of available health care.
...It is like government wants to drill insurance, insurance, insurance, as the mandatory item for social health care to create a submissive mass following to the tune of about $500 Billion/annual in projected profits for insurance companies in the near future.

If we don't get a public option, this IS going to end up to be more profits for the industry. They will get millions of new policyholders and subsidizes from the government for the ones that cannot afford their prices.
Too bad we don't have more doctors like this one.

This first I've viewed this thread...
I did get to see the October TV special on Dr. Oz. It brought tears to my eyes just watching it. On particular case touched me so much, was the couple that have 5 children, which the Father was layed off of his job about 5 months prior. The case was about the youngest daughter about age 2. It was discovered that she has a hole in her lower middle heart muscle, which causes blood flow to go into her lungs. Credit due to Dr. Oz, the child now has her own Cardiologist and Pediatrician free of charge. The Cardiologist currently is treating the child with medications until surgery is set up in the proper time allotment. The children had not seen a physcian for over 2 years due to the insurance once they had, the finances of copays, percentage of treatments and medications were beyond their income intake. Through Dr. Oz's clinic, all the children received full physicians, and immune vaccines that were over due. This was when they discovered a more serious problem with the little one.

Keith Oberman has ask for 5 free clinics to be held in the states where the senators are standing with the Health insurance industry (instead of with the people that need insurance). He wants them to see how many people are in desperate need of health care. So far, he has received over a millions dollars in donations to hold the clinics and I bet he gets even more. Dr Oz will be involved in them, I think.
