Think back over the past 25 years or so. Which party nominee (e.g., Kerry, Gore, Dole, etc), candidate for the party nomination (e.g., McCain, Edwards, Forbes, etc) or third party candidate (e.g.,Perot, Nader, Buchanan, etc) do you think would have made a great president.

I would agree....when Perot ran, I was surprised and pleased at the number of votes that he garnered, and would have loved to have seen the result of running the government like a business....might have put us all on the right track for a very long time. Who's to say? It would have been very interesting to have found out, though!

You may have something there....his mind goes a mile a minute, and you never know when he's going to switch directions and go off on a totally different tangent.....
Think about it - he'd so confuse and frighten the rest of the world there'd be NO WAY they'd ever want to screw with him!!!!!
Okay everyone - let's all start a grass roots write in campaign tonight - Robin Williams for president in 2008!!!!!!

Even though he never ran, I always thought Rudy Guliani would make an excellent president. He has it all, intelligence, charisma, empathy, the ability to forge alliances and make friends across idealogical boundaries -- all the attributes a successful statesman needs to be effective.
I guess he can still run, but he's not getting any younger so better hurry.

I think the next couple of years are ideal for 3rd party candidates. A 3rd party president is pretty unlikely but representatives and senators are a possibility. Just about everybody in DC is a political prostitute pandering for votes and cash.
As far as I'm concerned the partisan fingerpointing in Washington is just smoke and mirrors to keep the American people divided while they all work together to screw us all.

Very true, Spongy.
Yesterday, during lunch, I read an article in the current Time magazine about how integral consultants now are to politicians, especially in high offices like Congress and the President, with the media as driving force. It started with Kennedy-Nixon (the birth of modern political media) and has grown exponentially the past 45 years.
One reason Kerry and the Democrats did so poorly is they continually misread the public and jumped to the wrong conclusions. But then again, like you said, some really don't see a difference between the parties anymore; they think both are equally corrupt.
Personally I don't think, as a country, it's reached that point of apathy yet (there's still a huge groundswell of conservative voters that believe in Bush and the Republican platform, as the "Red" States demonstrated), but if the trend continues it's not going to be pretty.

I think Ross Perot would have been a good one too.
He is a very smart man-- not to mention filthy stinkin' rich.
But I think Reagan was the best so far.

Ooops! Sorry about that. Sounds like you need to "monitor your monitor" a bit more closely!
Motown - I think you said something more than a little worthwhile without even noticing:
Rudy Guliani....all the attributes a successful statesman needs to be effective.
Couldn't help but think....we've got TONS of politicians in Washington. How many true statesmen do we have?????? I think Rudy would turn out the vote BIG TIME!

ME!!! no, i'm kidding.
Honestly...the whiny little democrat in me wants to scream "GORE!! GORE!!" but I don't know if I can really, really believe that. I want to think McCain. A lot of hardcore conservatives hate him, and to me, that's a good thing. He's like the confused teenager of party politics, he doesn't know which side he really likes, but when he likes something, he really likes it. He's done some things I really respect and I could respect him, really respect him, if he ran for President. He's one of three Republicans I'd throw myself behind: the other two being Arlen Specter (R-Pennsylvania) and of course, Rudy Giuliani.
Of course I'd like to have seen John Lennon be president with Mick Jagger as his Veep...and of course me as Secy. of state....but that's just pure fantasy...

U.S. Rep Dennis Kucinich (D, Ohio) is my favorite. He was officially in the running in the 2004 election. Unfortunately, as we saw in Kucinich's case, if you don't whore yourself out to CFR or AIPAC you do not get to play in the debates. Most Americans still don't know who he is because of the too-powerful role the networks play in politics.
Here's some food for thought: http://www.commondreams.org/views03/1216-08.htm

Gerald Ford should have had a second term.
Lee Iacoca would have have been good but wouldn't run. The fact that he didn't want the job tells me he would have been great.
Dick Gephart would have had a much better chance in a national election than that completely out of touch idiot, Kerry.

I definitely would have voted for Colin Powell or Rudy Guillani. I don't think Gore would have been a spectacular president. I only voted for him because he was better than the alternative. I loathed Ross Perot and believe that he would have been one of our worst presidents ever. I am actually hoping that Obama Barak (sp?) will run in 2008. I would definitely vote for him!
