There was a thead on the best President that the United States has never had. So I figured we should stop "whining" (not taking a shot at anybody, I participated in that thread too, and I loved every second of it) about what we haven't had, and focus on what we have had.
Who was the best American president?
I think without question or argument it's Franklin Delano Roosevelt, closely followed by Abraham Lincoln.

Actually we've had quite a few great presidents.
During my lifetime I would go with Ronald Reagan. Prior to my birth it gets tougher but I'll say Abe Lincoln.

Over the summer, I visited the White House.
There are portraits of every President throughout the halls of the White House, and they are all the same size, but
FDR's portrait is huge. It's not really saying anything outwardly but I think it says a lot about how much he stands out from other Presidents. He turned our country around. That man is one of my inspirations.

I have to agree Franklin Roosevelt, for how he turned the country around gave Americans a sense of pride, something I haven't seen any other president do.
I read somewhere a close friend of his said, he is the only man I ever knew, who wasn't afraid of anything or anyone.
A close second would be Teddy Roosevelt, for what he did with our armed forces, and for helping preserve our natural resources.

A shout out for either Teddy Roosevelt or Dwight Eisenhower.
Those men were statesmen, not politicians.

Personally I think Gerald Ford was a decent president considering the circumstances he faced.

I can only speak for presidents during my lifetime. Jimmy Carter. For lots of reasons, but I would like to mention that he is a very religious man, but completely appropriate about it. As opposed to Bush. Bush just makes me hate Christians for trying to damn everyone else.

I agree with yo sj.
I was friends with Pres. Jimmy Carter's son and daughter in-law and had the pleasure to meet Pres. Carter and his wife Rosalynn. They truly are good down to earth people. I had dinner with the family at a local pizzaria and had a wonder time.
Pres. Carter was one of the most intelligent presidents this country has ever had. His work after leaving the white house should be applauded.

I don't see how so many people named Ronald Reagan......
I will say that I feel that besides "Monicagate", I feel Bill Clinton was an amazing president.

FDR was good, he made mistakes in dealing with Slalin but all presidents make mistakes. Clearly wartime presidents have a much rougher go of things.

Ok, now this is just my opinion ok? Yes, FDR was a very good president.
I also think we should have helped Europe before it came to our shores in WW2.
Ii don't think sticking our heads in the sand and thinking it isn't any of our business what is going on in the world unless it involves us is a good thing.
Other than that the programs he came up with to help us in our economy were/are good.

I would say Jimmy Carter, but I would probably be wrong. During his presidency, Carter was used as a scapegoat and made to look the fool, on more than one occasion. The poor guy.
His, and Rosalind's, Habitats for Humanity has been an incredible success and provided numerous families with housing. He is an amazing man.
Best president while actually in office? Maybe Abraham Lincoln. The Gettysburg Address is my favorite presidential speech ever. I would say FDR, but I believe there are many presidents who have their wives to thank for their ultimate success.
Behind every successful man...

Given the political realities of the time (i.e., America was stuck in the Depression and really did view the war as a "European problem), FDR did the best he could under the circumstances. His Lend-Lease program alone violated the terms of neutrality, for instance.
He also went a long way to preparing us for war. Not soon enough, mind you, but the best that could have been done.)
