I have a friend in South Korea telling me that he's listening to North Korean state radio broadcasts that are ordering NK citizens to raise their flags and listen to their radios at 2 PM thier time. I think that's 1AM eastern.

It won't be Korean. The language of the future may very well be Chinese. More than 1.3 billion people now speak some dialect of that language.

Professor Tom Laird says it right... "We'll be french-fried potatoes when we go..." ;>) Just some gallows humor, but not quite true and reflective of reality.
Don't sell the U.S. short - We could vaporize North Korea in short order with our own capabilities. They might bluster and threaten, but we have 13 times the military spending of all of the European powers put together. The North Koreans are playing chicken and testing our limits and that of our allies - nothing more. They know if they launch on us, they cease to be.

With the lesson of Iraq, I think the time to go in to remove threats and nation build has definitely passed.
I think we should just tell Iran and N Korea what we told the Soviets during the Cold War. You even "think" about using nukes against us and we'll make your country a parking lot.
I don't think they'll need a translation.

Suppose that you and I are residents of North Korea or Iran and our worst enemies have the ability to wipe us out with a nuclear warhead, wouldnt we want one to offer in return even if it we have only one?
Our country doesnt follow the nuclear proliferation treaty anymore than any others who have agreed to it do.
Yes,we have prevented any further terrorist attacks on our soil since 9/11 but the next 9/11 terrorist attack wont be as "mild" as the first one.A nuclear warhead detonated in one of our cities or on Israel wont come from a country like North Korea or Iran that we can pinpoint retaliation on,it will most likely come from any group or terrorist organization whose hate is far more important than life itself.

Go to the Boeing web site and search on "laser" and look for the laser plane. You'll be surprised that there exist defensive and layered defenses that make it unlikely that we'll be hit in the fashion you mention... Of course, there are more ways to conduct war than one can imagine, but the U.S. has made the priority of a defense shield a priority and it is the stated policy of the U.S. since the Clinton administration...

N. Korean threat activates shield U.S. cites a launch as 'provocative'
Mon Jun 19 2006 23:07:28 ET
The Pentagon activated its new U.S. ground-based interceptor missile defense system, Bill Gertz reports in Tuesday's WASHINGTON TIMES, just as officials announced that any long-range missile launch by North Korea would be considered a "provocative act."
Poor weather conditions above where the missile site was located by U.S. intelligence satellites indicates that an immediate launch is unlikely, said officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
However, intelligence officials said preparations have advanced to the point where a launch could take place within several days to a month.
Two Navy Aegis warships are patrolling near North Korea as part of the global missile defense and would be among the first sensors that would trigger the use of interceptors, the officials said yesterday.
Gertz reports: The U.S. missile defense system includes 11 long-range interceptor missiles, including nine deployed at Fort Greeley, Alaska, and two at Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif. The system was switched from test to operational mode within the past two weeks, the officials said.
Well.....That got my attention.
If they launch that thing.....An Aegis Cruiser, off the korean coast, may just blow it out of the air, before it seperated the first stage. I think we'er serious about it this time.

I'm not surprised...I've been watching the ABL program for some time.
I've always wondered about that North Korean train full of missle's, that blew up, last year, destroying half a village with it.
While they say ABL is not active yet...It ocures to me that a prototype of ABL, could have been be very useful against a soft ground target, like a parked train full of highly explosive missles....from a very long ways away.
Things that make you go......Hmmmmmm

I echo previous comments.
As far as I know, no other country puts as much emphasis, and spends even a fraction of the money, to research and develop defensive technology as the US military.
If we ARE close to a viable missile defense system, it would obviate the need to attack threats (and incur the inevitable civilian casualties) and thus avoid the usual world condemnation and backlash. We'd be only targeting the weapons themselves.
That still doesn't protect us from low tech terrorist devices planted on subways (as a recently uncovered plot suggests), but at least we'd have an alternative to massive retaliation against nation-directed attacks.
It will certainly be interesting to see what happens if N Korea goes through with their test.

The issue isn't that we have the strength to defend ourselves. The issue is that North Korea is highly irrational and you don't really know what drives them. North Korea's leaders need a strong and very focused response to these ravings of theirs.
Considering that we've witnessed in the last 5 years an attack on U.S. soil, it is prudent to assume the worst and proceed to defend the country on that basis.
