A Path Through Eden

Out beyond the Ocean Shores Motel I
stroll a path through scrubby brush and pudgy
evergreens. In half gone June the flowers
bloom in temperate air of Washington.

The midday sun is not yet hot. Bees are
buzzing ‘bout the petals; mosquitoes whiz
around my ears. Sweet the smell of rotted
leaves, mixes with the salted coastal breeze.

Proud and green delicious blades of grass
poke through the prickled berry twines.
The ocean hums with gentle roar of
sneaker waves. Pushing through the pine-cone

laden boughs the path begins to roll
through gentle dunes of tufts grass and sand.
The trail winds on by dried up ponds,
mud like desert ground that’s cracked in spots.

Alas the crash of waves does drown out
chirping chickadees. The tufts of grass
collect on tops of dunes like camel humps.
Blades that bend and rub the sand in gentle
arcs like etched in moons by children’s hands.

Wow the ocean splays its crash of white-caps!
Once the lush and peaceful path is now
a wide expanse of driftwood laden sand,
with shards of broken shells and seaweed strands.
