Ahhhhh.....Monday. Time to start a new week!
Which means no more Stairmaster for six whole weeks!! Woo hoo!!!
I switch my exercise routine every week. One week, run the track/weights. Next week, recumbant bike. Then run the track/weights again. Then stairmaster. Run the track/weights. Elliptical. Run the track/weights. Start over with recumbant bike.
It keeps me interested and it keeps my metabolism from getting too used to the same level of activity.
But. I. Hate. That. Damn. Stairmaster.
Did I mention I hate that machine? You can't read on it, because you're going up and down. Sure, I have headphones on, but the only other thing to do is watch the time count down the 45 minutes. I know it's a great workout, that's why I keep doing it, but I know I've thought up new cuss words while I was on that machine.
I hate that machine.
Did I mention I hate the stairmaster?

Why do you do 45 mins. on the Stairmaster??? More than 30 mins. of exercise in one session can actually be counterproductive for many, believe it or not, let alone 45 mins. of the same thing on a regular basis. And the Stairmaster is supposed to tone and even develop thighs and buns, but doing that much of it would only fatigue your muscles to no possible positive end.

I do 45 minutes because that's my routine, and it works for me. With before & after stretching and warm up/cool down time, I'm there an hour.
Again, it works for me. I'm happy with the results, I just hate that particular machine.

Wow, a good exercise mix and supreme dedication, Razzi (you sexy thing, you).
Same to you, Latin---great bodies you two.
I tried a few of those exercise machines from late night infomercials from hell years ago, and usually ended up sending them back (though I did like the Nordic Track ski knock-off, but it only lasted about six months before falling apart...lol).
I've tried health club memberships, jogging/walking routines, videos...you name it, but finally settled on working out at home with simple free weights and an indoor exercise bike.
I won't say it's the best workout in the world (I'm sure there are better), or that I stick with it 100%, but I exercise at least three-four times a week -- cardio and resistance.
That's the key. It's not so much what you do, but stick with it and make it a routine. Oh, and the older we get the more you need a good balance of resistance and cardio in the workout.

This it the first gym I've actually been able to stick with visiting. Probably because it's not really a "gym," it's a fitness center in a church just down the street from me.
It's really small and basic...they have a track (12 times around is a mile - you almost get dizzy running! ), 2 ellipticals, 2 recumbant bikes, one *&^^%$%$#@)(***&^%^$$# stairmaster, a weight room with free weights and a few resistance machines, an aerobics room, and one racketball court. Oh, and the basketball court. Not much to it, but it's only $15 a year.
Exercising alone doesn't work for me. Something in my psyche needs to be held accountable for exercising. I see the same people when I go, so I figure if I stopped going, they'd notice and think I was slacking off. I keep going to prove that I'm not slacking off. In reality, they probably don't even know I'm there and wouldn't notice if I suddenly stopped going, but, shhhh! don't tell my brain that.

Yep...peer pressure is certainly powerful. But I'm the one where it has the opposite effect. After awhile I start feeling like I'm being judged. I'd usually go for the first couple weeks and then started making excuses like, "Geez, can't today because I have that root canal"....lol.
But you're right, Razzi. Whatever works for you as an individual. The main thing is to find out and stick with it.

Same to you, Latin---great bodies you two. What??? Did I read right??? I really can't imagine what made you say that... I need to lose like 20 lbs. and I can't even say I believe my fat distribution is even... I met someone last month who said there was nothing wrong with me, that I have a "sexy body"... but he's like 60 lbs. overweight, so to him I probably looked like "Venus", lol! I just keep exercising for health and because the alternative is to totally give in to the dreaded FLAB but it's pretty discouraging to not get the results I want. Whenever I manage to lose a few pounds I gain them back just as soon (I have an unstable thyroid... and the lack of love drives me to eat chocolate... ). BUT I will love you forever for such a kind comment...!
I don't go to a gym either. I own a variety of videos that I rotate, a small stepper, free weights and I recently bought a "Gazelle".

The stair master looks painful especially to a person like me with bad knees. I prefer the Elliptical machines since they tend to burn the calories fast in a cardio workout.

You're right. The stairclimber is rough. In fact I finished it earlier today. I did 65mph for about 10min. I lost about 200 calories. Around 6min or so I had to lower it to about 60mph, but I still lost 200 calories. The only machine harder than the stairclimber is the treadmill, especially if you actually run on it. I do 10min at 6.5mph with a 1.5 incline and lose like 130 calories or so. People have different theories on fitness, but one thing is always true. The more resistance you use, the better and quicker the results you can get. If you're getting a mediocre workout, you'll get mediocre results. Of course, you still have to be safe while working out.

how about a little heaven? have you ever considered a simple rebouder? I have one and have been using it since Christmas with two hand grips for support, it's to icy outside (northern BC Canada) to walk my dog, so now I do about a 40 - 60 min bounce aerobic workout 3 - 4 times a week, it's working very well, I have lots more energy, I also do about one hour of yoga, no machines needed and at least 1/2 hour of self massage, I have lots of massage machines from heaven! sounds like a lot but I do most while I am doing other things so it works for me. my commitment is to loose 4 inches from my gut and then I will cut down to maintain.I have added Laughter and have my favorite music playing too! I personally prefer the treadmill and recumbent bike. Machines from hell for me are the eliptical trainer, which seems to not have a long enough stride (for my long legs) and makes my knees and hips hurt like hell within just a minute or so and the stairmaster. Give me a building with more than 10 floors and I would do that anyday versus a stairmaster.

I am lucky. The gym I go to has a tv in front of all the cardio machines. I hate the stair master too, but the time goes by a lot faster when I get into watching something that I like. Thank goodness for cable.

What I hate more than the stairmaster is this company and the outrageous claims they make about their bike. http://www.fastexercise.com/

So 'nilla... when can you work out again??? I mean...your not getting in SOME light workouts is counter-productive- you need the workouts...however light to maintain muscle tone ...otherwise,you'r body will start to feed off itself.

Buy a Wind trainer for home and use your own bicycle 10 speeds or more you can increase the resistance on the wheel then go through the gears to simulate going up hill. It exercises the same muscles a stair master does without putting stress on the knees. Your target pedal rate should be 80-85 beats per minute at all resistance levels. 20 minutes of this is more than enough if you vary the intensity including getting out of the saddle to emulate hills at high big gear resistance.
Having competed in endurance cycling for 4 decades and 10,000 or more miles per year this is my regular off season routine.
