If so, what kind?
I still take Flintstones chewables alot.......no, they arent JUST for kids, and taste alot better than the adult variety. I have a new one Im trying now......Onesource Mens.
I know your body doesnt absorb nutrients from pills as well as it does naturally, but hey.......its better than nothing.

I take pre-natal vitamins because my OB/GYN told me they're the best multi vitamin a woman can take, whether pregnant or not.

I take One A Day for women, when I remember to, but that's only 3 or 4 times a week.
About prenatal vitamins -- I heard they had too much iron in them for a non-pregnant woman. It's not always the case that more is better, especially in vitamins.

I heard somewhere that the body does not completey absorb vitamins taken in pill form.
Many tablet vitamins are very cheap, mass produced and sold in supermarkets across the world. When you go shopping to your local store you will likely come across them in multivitamins etc. They are also made with the cheapest excipients – This is what puts the ingredients together, resulting in tablet form.
Because of this, the nutrients are mostly released in the stomach and destroyed by stomach acids.
In the case of these types of supplements, a large percentage will simply be wasted when you go to the toilet.
The best delivery system for vitamin absorption and the other nutrients in the tablet is called enteric coating.

There really isn't a difference in the vitamin in a supplement versus those that come from food, the only difference is that in some cases the food will naturally possess factors that help in the absorption of the vitamin.
Also in order for a drug to be absorbed it has to be dissolved in the fluids of the gastrointestinal tract. Depending on the solubility of the drug, whether it is soluble in acidic environments or basic environments it will be dissolved either in the stomach or the intestines. Of course poorly formulated drugs may be incompletely absorbed, which causes them to pass through the system unchanged.
I'm not entirely sure how the approval system for vitamins work, especially not in the entire world, but in the United States I don't know if vitamins are required to go through FDA approval. However, when it comes to disintegration of a vitamin I know that the vitamin industry is required by law to perform tests to make sure the vitamin will dissolve properly. There is also something known as cGMP which regulates buildings, equipment, laboratory controls, records/reports, organization and personel of labs...a good way to make sure a vitamin is of good quality is to see if the lab in which this manufacturer conducts tests is FDA approved, not necessarily the vitamin itself.
And yea, enteric coatings are good for tablets to make sure the drug/vitamin makes it to the intended site of absorption.

I don't know if vitamins are required to go through FDA approval I'm not sure about vitamins but I do know that all other dietary supplements like you get at stores like GNC are not FDA approved and I THINK vitamins are not as well.

this is such a great topic. Thanks for bringing it up. I am learning lots. As I move deeper into my 50's these types of questions are important to me...I don't have anything intelligent to add, but keep on...

CaNatBlonde - you're correct, they're not subject to FDA approval. Some are water soluble (like vitamin C) and as long as you're drinking plenty of water, you're okay. Others are fat soluble (like vitamin A) and can be problematic - you need to be careful not to overdo it.
Personally, I try to keep my diet varied, but I take a diabetes formulation every day, in addition to CoQ10. Since I'm post-menopausal I avoid iron supplements, bt I make sure I take my lutein (eyes) and plenty of anti-oxidants like green tea (good thing I love my veggies and red fruits!).
