....why does it have to be soooooooooooooo difficult to quit smoking?

Really have to give it my BEST, because of previous health issues, and the FIRST, but apparently very serious orders form my NEW physician.

Smoking is/was my only vice, I do not drink, nor have I ever indulged in drugs; but I am smart enough to know that smoking (nicotin) is an ADDICTION.

In the grace of GOD, my Creator and Savior, I pray and plead for success.

Suggestions, tips and comments are welcome

Have you considered hypnotherapy? There are therapists who are trained in the art of hypnosis. I never used it myself but I heard that it does work. You could be hypnotized to dislike smoking or get hypnotized to eat less.

My husband smoked for 40 years, had quit once years ago but due to weight gain he immediately started again. This time around the things he did that made a difference for him:

1) Picked a date....in his case it was his son's 40th bday.

2) Started on Wellbutrin/Zyban at least two weeks before starting the quit.

3) Used the 3-step patch (NOTE: some folks have nightmares and end up doing without the patch at night)

He said he had very little in the way of cravings and was really surprised. He felt that both setting the date and using the Wellbutrin were the key for him....the patch alone wouldn't have been enough.

Good luck to you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh, and here's a fun countdown you can put on your computer desktop to tell you how long it's been since you quit, how many cigarettes you didn't smoke and how much money you've saved. Just a little added visual incentive.... http://standalone.quitmeter.com/

The first thing you have to do is decide who's in charge of your life, you or your addictions. Then you have to find something to take its place, eating is just another addiction. You also need to change a lot of your lifestyle habits and diet, to take out the triggers that make you want to smoke, like coffee, sweet, fatty foods and alcohol. Each time you feel like a smoke, get up and go for a walk until you don't feel like a smoke. Even if you walk miles, push your self, or exercise then have a glass of water, nothing sweet

It's not easy, but it can be if you are prepared to re-invent yourself and create a new life. Substitutes don't work only dedication and change. After all if you were walking down a road and saw a truck heading to run over you, you'd get out of the way. Well cigarettes are like a truck, yo can see death coming from them, but live in hope it will miss you when it runs over everyone else. Living in hope or expecting prayers to help is not very sensible considering 99.99999% of prayers are never answered. I life, it boils down to you and no one else, you either take control, or your just a slave to the inevitable outcome of a painful death and short restricted life.

You may need some patches or gum to help you with cravings.
Don't think of it as difficult... think of it as something you just dont want to do anymore and start living like you don't smoke.
They say it takes 21 days to form a new habit. Not smoking would be your new habit.
Try to subsitite the bad habit of smoking with something healthy, like taking a walk.

So how has it been going for you?

Hi Mysterious_URS, good for you, quitting smoking is one of the hardest things to do, worse quitting heroin! I will tell you of my success story and hope it will inspire you to keep with it. I had tried to quit a few times, once for 3 years, once for one year and then the last time... 25 years ago I went to a acupressure doctor who showed me 3 pressure points in my ears. It worked.. the reasons.. I really wanted to quit, I had to seek help from a specialist, I had to pay for the session $22.00 for a broke musician it was a lot back then!, it was physical I got to play with the pressure points whenever I wanted a smoke instead of reaching for a smoke and it was psychological, I had to think about the pressure points. I had to quit for my singing, I know there were more reasons but this should give you a good start on your own list. YOU CAN DO IT! MM good luck!

Hi Mysterious,

Well, I quit last Christmas day after smoking for 46 years. I just decided to quit one day and did just that...cold turkey. I always kept a pack around just in case I had a panic attack, I guess, but never touched it. I just got through one moment at a time and now I'm fighting the battle of the bulge and, as a lot of people know, losing weight isn't easy, either. But I will win this battle, also!

Just take it one day at a time and like dieting if you fall off the wagon just get right back on it. Good luck!

Since you have given it to the Lord He will, in HIs time, set you free from this addiction too. But you know once He is done with that He will show you something else that needs to be addressed.

I smoked for about 11 years, two packs a day, unfilterd camels or pall mall's. After two or three years of struggling I became angry with myself for letting some weed control my like that. So I earnstly prayed, and threw what I had left in the trash. Two years later I smoked one just to see if I was really done. It was horrible and I have never tasted one since. I can hardly stand to smell the darn things any more either. It was not easy and quitting was a bumpy ride up and down. But in the end the Lord took the desire away from me or I doubt that I would have quit. I know you can do it just follow Jesus's advice " Don't fear, only believe." Sorry but that is the best I can give you. Hope you get what you need when you need it. God bless.
