Anyone out there a vegetarian? I want to stop eating meat and was wondering how any of you felt after the conversion. I would also like some hints for protein replacement. THX

I am, since 1973...(no that is not why I am thin)

Almost all veggies have protein (esp beans), maybe supplement a little brewers yeast everyday.

It would be wise to eliminate meats slowly, and not all at once.
Get a good veggy cookbook, and do some reading.
Legumes are very good.. and mixed grain breads is the best way to go.

I am an ovo lacto vegetarian, which means i do eat some dairy products.
I think this is wise at first too... and not total vegan.
Also get a good vitimin for now Just in case, you are missing something.
i drink soy milk but i still love cheese.

I will eat meat once in a while... but very seldom any more, and most of my cooking can be altered to allow for both.... just add some meat to things for others.

Congrats on going Vegan and becoming pro-active with your health!

If you go to www.animalplace.org they have a good listing of vegan dietary
alternatives for you to get started.

Here's a few:

Hamburgers: Boca Vegan Original, Gardenburger, Natural Foods Tofu Burger by Wildwood, Grillers Burger, Better Burgers by Morningstar Farms, Organic Vegan Veggie Burger by Whole Foods Market

Hotdogs: Smart Dogs by lighlife, Tofu pups by Lightlife.

Bacon: Smart Bacon by lightlife; Canadian Veggie Bacon by Yves, Veggie Breakfast Patties by Yves.

Ground Beef: Gimme Lean Ground Beef Style or Smart Ground by Ligthlife or Ground Meatless crumbles by Morningstar.

Turkey: Unturkey by Now and Zen

Baking: Ener-G Egg Replacer (simulates eggs in baked goods) or
Wonderslim Fat & Egg Substitue

Or 1/4 Cup Applesauce and tsp. of baking powder = 1 egg
1/3 flax seeds ground up with 1 cup water: 3 tbs. = 1 egg
1/2 half banana mashed = 1 egg

Amy's Kitchen Frozen Entrees have many vegetarian options.

Other sources of protein: Legumes/beans, peanut or almond butter, nuts, tofu
(the hard types you can stir fry with sesame oil) silk tofu mix makes great protein shakes when you put it in a blender with ice and your favorite fruits.

Other meatless options:
Tempeh (fermented soybeans/nutty and tangy taste to it)
Tofu: Hard or silk (see above)
Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP) what's left after the oill is extracted from soybeans and very healthy. Available in granules or chunks.
Seitan: made from Wheat gluten (the protein part of flour). You can purchase the premade version.
CHEESE!

Vegan Cookies Manufacturers are:
Alternative Baking Co.
Sunflour Banking Co.
Newman's Own
Healthy Valley
Hain Animal Cookies
Country Choice

Of which you can look up the company's and see where they sell it in your area.

Soymilk: Silk by White Wave (industry favorite right now)
Westsoy
Edensoy
Vitasoy
Ricemilk: Rice Dream

Instead of butter I spread a 1 teaspoon of coconut oil on my morning raisin bread
(it's good!). The coconut oil helps rev up the metabolism. (That's a little known secret).

I can not remember the last time I was in McDonald's or Burger King and frankly
I don't miss it!

I still eat eggs and other dairy products. But NO meat whatsoever.
I do see a difference with my health check ups since I became a Vegetarian.
My overall cholesterol, blood pressure and weight have decreased due to my
change away from meat. I only get the occasional negative comments from family members during the Holidays, but that's expected, they are just not used to a more heathy way to eat.

Best of luck on your Vegan diet!!!!!

I have to say, I tried Boca burgers and ended up taking it out of the bun and eating the bun with the condiments.
They taste like cardboard-only IMO.

Try Morning Star Original Grillers they are great and I agree with you, Boca burgers are nasty.

side note, regardless if meat or a substitute the condiments make the burger.

Yes, the Morningstar burgers are pretty good.

I've probably been off meat for about a month now. I do eat eggs and use dairy products, so my diet remains pretty balanced. I try to incorporate whole grains as often as I can.

Hello,

I've been a vegetarian (ovo-lacto) for over 25 years and, as far as I understand, our bodies don't need loads and loads of protein as long as we have the recommended daily allowance. The following are quite good sources-

chick peas
milk
lentils
tofu
soy milk
nuts

There are loads more of course.

On the whole, I'd be more concerned about iron. Vegetarian sources of iron can be harder for the body to absorb. Vitamin C helps this process and certain things (e.g. tea) impede it so it's good to be aware of this when combining foods. Our bodies need B12 to absorb iron too and so it's important to make sure that you get the RDA of that as well, which probably means taking a supplement. But maybe you know all about that - you did ask about protein, not iron, after all....

I became a vegetarian for humanitarian reasons rather than because I don't like meat. In fact I think some meat tastes really nice (as far as I can remember!) and there are lots of vegetables that I really dislike. I just mention this as a way of showing that if I can be a vegetarian, anyone can!

Best of luck,

SeaWhite gotlost

I became a vegetarian for humanitarian reasons

I became one because my ex-wife decided she would not cook meat anymore

After a bit it became the norm...go figure. (much more to it but why take up space in da forum)

Essential Amino acids and how to get them from a strict plant source alone it is done by combing two foods....Otherwise one needs a lacto vegetarian diet

A good article on this from WebMD

I just started a vegetarian diet 2 months ago, but didn't think I was getting enough protein, so I added eggs...now, I have expanded to an ovo-vegetarian, but sure do miss bacon with the eggs...too bad...along with protein, the other nutrients needed are B-12, calcium and iron, and get them from supplements and plants...I read the book The China Study by 2 doctors named Campbell and changed my way of thinking about eating animal based protein...I also read that cow's milk is 87% casein which is not so good for you, plus being pastuerized and homogenized, the milk is useless for any nutrients...the milk sold now in grocery stores is just milk-colored water which has anti-biotics, BGH, and other chemicals in it from the cow...if you want to drink milk, get it raw if you can find it...I even started drinking goat's milk till I found out about the casein in it also...but an ovo-vegetarian diet is just right for me.
