When we are in a lot of pain - why does the animal scream or become so expressive about their pain (and it's my understanding that in fact, not all animals are expressive about their pain - some tend to hold it in)?
But if exposed to some sudden malady that returns in painful bodily injury - why do we scream? Is there a biological reason behind this?
just curious....

I've never done any research on the issue but my personal guess would be that maybe screaming releases endorphins. Those endorphins might partially turn down the reactions from nerve endings in our brain.
I wish I had a better answer but good luck in your search.

Its 50/50 with me, sometimes I just silently make faces in pain...other times I'll scream my word of choice...either way, helps releive some pain I guess.

Screaming throws off the focus of your mind away from pain. It also channels your energy by using your breath in a deliberate manner. Martial artists use the yell, a kiai yell, to help focus the mind and momentary activating your adrenal glands and tightens your abdominals. Screaming is the body's natural way of enduring stress. It helps release endorphins that helps block pain.
