There's a reason they give you the pain meds, Sweet. If you're "mellow" and not in a whole lot of pain you won't tighten up as much and will likely at least feel like you've healed faster.
When I had similar surgery, I was given only 10 Roxicet (acetaminophen and oxycodone, like Percoset or Tylox) -- stingey docs!! I only took 2 right after I got home, but found that the surgery pain wasn't nearly as bad as my everyday chronic pain is -- it was only in one arm and definitely "doable"...so I squirrelled them away for "emergency days" (days when I want to function like a human)
I could have killed the jerk who was with me at the time, though. He ratted around in my closet and found my "stash" and took FOUR of them "recreationally" That was one of the most selfish, cruel acts anyone has ever done to me...I was totally disgusted at his lack of compassion and respect. I coped with the surgery after-effects so that I could have something to help me cope with my "bad" days and he only allowed me two chances at "good" days after his "fun".
Welllllll.... If you're not gonna take your meds, wanna send 'em to me? (j/k...honest, lol. )
You might as well take your Rx, hon...so what if you sleep? Got anything more pressing to do other than healing?
And no, you're not going to become addicted or dependent...if that's what's worrying you.

Sweet I am with sunbabie..........take the meds........I just nibble on mine........as needed.......but the first couple of weeks is what they want you to do.......your body goes into shock when you have surgery...........even if you feel fine....you don't get the needed care and you really need your rest that is the whole purpose to keep the patients down and so they can get the extra rest they need because as I stated....your body goes into a huge shock and needs to heal and so many people jump the gun and overdo it........ the risk involved of overdoing it and not taking care of you........is a bad healing process and could put you off work more and find you have problems later cuz you did not listen to the dr........don't worry about being addicted I hate pills to but.....I nibble on them like just a bite here and there sometimes I take the whole thing no driving of course.....but prepare everything as needed.....the more rest you get the faster you heal .....that is the secret of any surgery...... Just don't drive...walk careful if you have stairs when taking your meds and have your meals plan so your not loopy if you get those kinds of meds so you don't forget to turn off the stove or stuff......that would be me.......and I have had situations that.........were scary......so be careful and get rest you will be just fine......

As much as I hate to disagree with two lovely ladies, on this occasion I do. Each person has his/her own tolerance to pain and I firmly believe that the minimal amount of pain medicine that you can use (none, if possible) is best. Our bodies are wonderful creations and have many mechanisms to heal themselves.
While I have never had major surgery, I have had several broken bones and hundreds of stitches...and have thus far managed to recover without the use of pain killers. It was tough at times, but I wanted to be aware of what was going on with my body without anything being masked by pain medicines.
The only time I have numbed myself was with tequila!!!

IF the doc prescribed them then I'd say take them, but the choice is ultimately yours.

From a nurse, Sunny is right. You need to take them, especially if you are doing exercises for your wrist. Pain medicine makes movement tolerable.
If they make you too sleepy, then call your doc and get something else

do what the doctor tells you to do.
I had a seperated shoulder when i was wrestling in high school and it was right before regionals when i was aloud to wrestle again, but the doc wanted me to take 2 vikadin before i went out and wrestled, he origanally didnt want me to wrestle but i told him how important this match was, well i didnt take them b/c i didnt want to feel all loopy for my match. Needless to say i lost the match b/c i was in so much pain, so i started taking the meds and went on to win a district title.

I have had 3 hip surgeries and now have severe arthritis in several joints in my body. I take generic vidodin, was just upped to way over 500 mg. I take one every morning and then only take another if I have a really bad day. I also have some meds for the arthritis that I'm supposed to take twice a day but I usually forget to take the 2nd one. But I've gotten such a tolerance for the pain meds that they don't help much anymore. My doctor and I both don't want to go on to the narcotic drugs, at least not yet.
