Trying to get back in shape after so many years and went for a short run hoping to work up to more ventually but even this was grueling and made me wonder if this long- distance thing was natural. I mean were our bodies even designed to run on miles on end....???

I think walking is a more natural exercise than running. And I love water aerobics!

I'm thinking of getting back into running as well, but personally, I think a 5-10km jog, a few times a week, is good enough to get back into shape.
I prefer swimming though - it tends to be more relaxing.

Swimming is good for you, but the chlorine you absorb into your body from a swimming pool is not good for you. If you use a swimming pool, salt water is the way to go, or of course there are the oceans, lakes and rivers.

Our pool has a Ozinator.......and I have been swimming since I was 7 years old...and my skin is silky smooth. The thing to do is when you get out of a pool...use club soda or baking soda to rinse your body and then follow up with lotion.....

There is nothing wrong with distance running. It takes dedication and training. Most aren't willing to put that kind of commitment in. It is as fulfilling as it is challenging as only another distance runner would know.

Goodness yes.
It also releases endorphins and makes you feel great.
However, you need to be in shape before you run distance. Obese people would get hurt by it.

And my humble tip would be to avoid running long distance on concrete - jarrs your knees and back.

I've heard that running, for women, isn't good over the long haul for the inners.

Or the knees...mine look like they're broken in x-rays, the cartilage is so broken down. Osteoarthritis is no respector of persons...and mine started in my twenties, when I was officially underweight.
I think I'd pay attention to family history before even embarking on LDR (running, not relationship!). My own, especially among the women, shows early and severe arthritis. No need to invite trouble...BTW though, what I found helps is weight training...I have less trouble at 65 than I had at 50. Leg presses and back extensions are great.
Running though? Little history of arthritis? Your choice, but I think water aerobics (hi Painter ) and weight training, or walking on composite surfaces rather than concrete, are a much kinder way to care for our bodies.

Heaven. ...and there are some great pools in your area. I have put on clinics there in years past... and women over 50 need to add weights to their workout....Just read a study about this a few weeks ago. Im not much into lifting weights, but I did start to add some light weights to one of my land exercise classes a month ago...................

I ride bicyle and rollerblade. I only run when I play basketball and it really is bad for your legs and knees. Water exercise sounds like the way to go!

Flame......deep water fitness, where you wear a floatation belt and maintain verticality. You could compare it to water polo. The workout is intense....
