I just read a study that's been out a yr. or two already that the less you sleep the more likely you are to gain weight and the more yOu sleep vice- versa! I don't know about you but I associate more sleep with less physical activity and less with more! It's like God played a trick on the people Who work out regularly or at least AREactive and working throughout the day. LOL!

from what I can tell... you are disagreeing with the study due to the fact that in your personal life, you feel less sleep is better to lose weight..?
my thoughts are..
a good nights sleep = ...You have more energy..You are more inclined to be active. Your body is in a "get up and go mode". And so ..you burn calories off..
less sleep = You are tired.. You drag throught the day.. Your body is in a conservation mode..And so..you do not burn off calories
same with eating.. just eating less every now and then could actually make you gain weight unles you go into a starvation diet mode.. which is not healthy...

Generally the more you sleep the less you eat so it should make you lose weight. My friend is on a diet called the HCG diet where you eat alot of food and you still lose alot of weight.

GH, Actually there'a lil more to it than that? They're talking necessity for a lot of sleep like nine hours, and it's physiologically based on chemicals which was why I wrote what I wrote.

Eight hours of sleep per night might be ideal, researchers report.
They studied 323 men and 417 women in Canada's Quebec province. Those who reported sleeping seven to eight hours per night were leaner than those who noted five or six hours of nightly sleep.
The study was presented at the North American Association for the Study of Obesity's annual scientific meeting held in Vancouver, Canada.
The researchers included Jean-Philippe Chaput, a doctoral candidate in kinesiology at Laval University in Quebec City.
Slumber Study Participants completed surveys about their sleep habits. They also took blood tests that screened for leptin, a hormone involved in regulating hunger.
The researchers estimated how much leptin participants should have, based on body fat.
Leptin is a hormone that is made predominately in fat cells. The amount of leptin in the blood is proportional to the amount of body fat. It is thought to decrease appetite. However, most obesity is characterized by resistance to leptin and its appetite-suppressing effect.
Participants who reported less sleep tended to have lower leptin levels than predicted. That might mean that their bodies weren't using leptin very efficiently.
Our bodies and behavior are complicated. So it's not as simple as saying, "Less sleep, less leptin, more hunger, more eating, more weight, more fat."
Instead, it may be more like a jumbled knot -- tackle one thread, and another may bunch up. So sleep may not fix weight problems all by itself. Don't expect it to overrule the calories you eat and burn during the day.
But there are still plenty of reasons to get enough sleep.
For starters, driving while drowsy is a hazard to yourself and everyone on the road. That dragged-out feeling can dull your entire day, too.
Easier Said Than Done? Sleep sounds lovely, you say, but it's just not happening.
Sometimes, we skimp on sleep because we're burning both ends of the candle with work, school, or family demands. In other cases, sleep problems are signs of other medical problems. For instance, depression can wreck sleep (by causing either too much or too little slumber).
Lack of sleep isn't always that complicated. For some, it's a matter of breaking that late-night TV habit and turning in earlier.
Here are some "sleep hygiene" rules that may help you get adequate sleep:
Get up at the same time every day (including weekends). Get as much light as you can during your desired waking hours. Go to bed at night only when you think you can fall asleep. If you're having trouble sleeping, minimize daytime naps. Make the bedroom dark. Get heavy drapes, if necessary. Minimize caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol, especially before bedtime. Exercise regularly, but not too close to bedtime. Unwind for an hour first. Try taking a warm bath, journaling, switching off the news, or drinking some warm milk. Make your bedroom a sanctuary. There have been studies to indicate that you actually burn more calories sleeping than watching TV...... I need to change my habits 
I wonder how many calories are burned on late-night posting in the MD forums
We should conduct a study! Any volunteers?

I don't have a TV, so when I'm not sleeping I'm doing late night MD posting, then doing some more sleeping (not counting all the naps I take in the day)
Want me to weigh in or just get ya to follow my routine, T~?
I wonder how many calories are burned on late-night posting in the MD forums Don't forget: to get an accurate count, everyone would have to shake out their keyboards every night to see who's cheating buy the crumbs they left behind.
(I'm only teasing because my keyboard needs to be shaken upside down all the time -- when I keep dropping the same letters when I'm typing, I know it's time for another shake-up...which doesn't burn nearly as many calories as the crackers and popcorn and cookies and pistaschios that caused it to jam up )

~ I read some-wwwhere recently, - that the US Navy has done(& continues to do): *Extensive Sleep/Health Studies on submarine crews. There was 'Mega' information discussed; -including weight to food intake ratios, 'on the ball' alertness, etc. - The distilled bottom line was/is that: ~ 6 hours,40 minutes sleep is Better than more or less.
(Assuming a well person eating correctly for activity level.)
~ Considering the 'laboratory' of submarines, being devoid of -'normal' day & night cycles, and knowing how 'Controlled food offered, and Exercise regimens are in such a Work environment; I think they likely have some top-notch findings. -Some of them stay down for years I think.

Its a controlled environment.....a way of life. same as one should look at when trying to lose weight. Its not just a matter of cutting back on what you eat, but also changing your lifestyle...jmo

My cousin's a retired submarine commander, I'll try to remember to ask him what he thinks of that study.
Sidebar though, I've been sleeping up a storm since I came back from vacation totally exhausted, and I've never lost weight this rapidly before. I'm grabbing cat naps every chance I get, and I've lost six pounds in a week, without even trying. The exhaustion was mostly from the travelling, no sleep on the plane, landing at midnite and going right in to work, not from lots of exercise.
Bad thing is that my blood sugar's waaaaaay out of control, I'm embarrassed to even post the numbers. Biggest contributing factor's been not being careful about my meds - the good news is that I've gotten it down 200 points in two days, bad news is that there's still a long way to go. Doctor's visit on Thursday, I suspect he'll want to put me on insulin, at least temporarily.
