I thought I had found the perfect approach to managing weight control; for several months - prior to the holidays - I had simply chosen an eating plan, followed it faithfully, and, without weighing myself even once, had achieved my goal of finding that my clothes were fitting as I desired.

I certainly must have relaxed my vigilance between Thanksgiving and Christmas, though, for I now feel that uncomfortable physical, as well as emotional, tautness that declares I have to revisit, revise or review my dietary plan

If anyone else is feeling that call to diligence, what are you trying or recommending to get back on track?

The holidays get to you all the time.....there are so many parties to go to an then there are work parties and everyone is bringing in the snacks You will get back on track.........everyone always has there up's and downs.......

In my case it's been more that I was in denial and need help in digging myself out; I was fortunate to find that I qualified for a clinical study of a drug called Lorcaserin, intended to replace the Fen of Fen-Phen, without the side effect of heart valve damage. The study includes working with a dietician, an M.D. and an advisor. It had also included about 4000 participants, including a friend at the office who told me about it.

Long story short, these are definitely pros. Their advice was to take it slow - if you try to make too many changes at once, you're more likely to fall back into old habits. If you take things one at a time, you're more likely to build new habits that will make other changes easier...nothing succeeds like success.

I've lost four pounds in just under three weeks, but I had the flu just before I started taking the medicine - no effect on the study part, but it's kept me from upping my activity level, which is usually key for me in any extended weight loss program.

I don't know if I'm on the medication or a placebo - I'm highly suggestible and know this is supposed to curb appetite, and lo and behold, my clean plate approach is now going to the 'half for lunch, remainder for dinner' style. I still don't know which I'm taking but I'm not going to fight it.

By the way, for me the incentive was far more critical than just disgruntling - this particular study is to test the drug's effects on Diabetes II folks. My blood glucose level was out of control, even with meds. Following this approach, my Bg. level on day 1 was 389, today's (day 17) was 145.

The allotted calories per day are 1600, plus 125 'fudge factor' calories, considerably higher than the usual 1200 or so that I always tried for before. Lots of fluids, especially water and fruit/veggie juices. Have some dairy and some protein at every meal, have snacks if and when you need them, but journal everything. I've always been bad about journalling but now that I have to turn in my journal every two weeks, I've become pretty danged thorough!

The icing on the cake - I'm getting free medical care, including several echocardiograms, that would probably cost several thousand dollars, and I'm being paid $740 for participating.

That is great Heaven............I used to work for a research company..........so I know very well how it works..........when patients come in........it is a great thing..for people wanting to participate......we had all kinds of studys

It is incredible what you see behind the scenes......of how each study goes...

After a week back on track, I modified my eating plan.

I eat oatmeal with dried fruit for breakfast (as usual) and two small fruit servings mid-morning and mid-afternoon.

I had been eating Progresso soups - the whole tin, which is two servings, but still usually under 200 calories - for lunches, along with a few crackers and cheese, often, depending on the protein in the soups.

Danger time ( i.e., dinner) had left me ravenously inept at taking the time to make my normal meals of normal protein serving and fairly large vegetable servings. I had found myself nibbling over-eagerly at things I had decided I should not eat. Feeling that I had maimed my plan, I had become more likely to overeat.

I started taking for lunch a small sandwich of peanut butter and honey, tuna salad made with plain yoghurt and served on romaine.

In switching my lunch - soups,etc. - to dinner, I overcame the tendency to panic at the thought of preparing a meal at the end of a long and busy day. Being able to eat something satisfying and filling (soups) soon after arriving home gave me the sense of "management" that helped me make wiser decisions about how I would eat the rest of the evening.

I still treat myself to a frozen fudge stick or creamsicle (100 calories or less) most evenings.

Heaven is right in saying that 1500 to 1600 calories is a much more manageable caloric target than the 1200 or 1000 that many of us aim for (I know - the preposition rule was just broken , Heaven ).

Each "managed" day makes the next "managed" day easier and makes any slip of commitment a stumble instead of a collapse.

My next stumble may be Super Bowl offerings tomorrow; I may be the only Pittsburgher eating romaine

Ah Super Bowl Sunday...for me it will be DiGiorno Supreme pizza with cheese stuffed crust, and damn the calories!! It's 350 calories a slice but I may even go for three...actually it's been a non-stop day, during which I totally forgot about lunch and didn't actually have a whole lot else during the day...my usual 300 calories breakfast (Jimmy Dean D-Light) and a Tai Pei shrimp fried rice with veggies, under 600 for the day in fact, so I can pig out pretty freely tomorrow.

I do have sparkling clean windows in the living room, all 120 square feet of them, floors are all scrubbed, furniture and mirrors all polished and it smells amazing in there....yay, I'm finally feeling well enough to 'exercise' but my house has been so neglected this month I have to concentrate on using them to play 'catch up.'

Madame, prepositions aside, I'd just like to mention the sodium content of those Progresso soups (which I really, really enjoy)...if you have the whole can, you've probably already exceeded your recommended sodium allowance for the day. If you're not salt-sensitive it's no big deal, but if you have any blood pressure issues, check your pressure occasionally to see if it's being affected. I'm one of the salt-sensitive types, and even the low sodium soups are problematic for me.

But I'm down another pound and my Bg. level has gone down to 130.

Yep, Heaven; I was aware of the sodium issue. Fortunately, my only health issues are extra padding and an occasional nasty attitude

My goal in this "program" was to eat mostly as naturally and simply as I could; I have eliminated sugar and artificial sweeteners, rarely (and only during lapses) eat anything pre- or fast-prepared, and realize that this is not a life-time program, just a tolerable one.

Unfourtunately, my windows are no match for yours. I will jubilate with you, though, on each and every pound that falls off our hips or other regions.

That is wonderful Heaven.................I watch my salt intake..........it's why I drink tons an tons of water an......I don't even have salt or sugar in the house I use alternate..........ways of seasoning........ but.........every once in awhile......hello..................to the good stuff
