Has anybody ever had it, had a family member that had it, etc etc?

If so, what were your experiences with the testing, diagnosis and treatment?

I was diagnosed with stage 2 papalary thyroid cancer July 2002. I under went a total thyroidectomy and have gone through 4 massive doses if I-131 Radiation. I just recently went through a total body scan and the scan shows no signs of cancer. WOOO HOOOO but my blood levels are still elevated. Its a very scary time but I have been told by several physicians it's the best kind of cancer to have because the recovery rate is much greater then any other kind.

I underwent all the scans, tests, and finally the biopsy (fine needle aspiration FNA) for the first nodule.... doing the FNA twice since the results were satisfactory the first time..... it was decided it was benign and I was fine other than that because of complications with the nodule I would still have to have surgery to remove it at a later date. Then they found the second one. I've started hurting again, sick again, etc etc etc...... I have to start all over again with the ultrasounds, the scans, and the worse part to me -- the FNA. That was the most intense pain I've ever experienced. Yes, that's what I was told too.... my doc told me if I had to choose of all the cancers in the world, it would be the one to go with. I feel I was extremely lucky the first go around.... and now that I'm talking to my doctors again and making plans and arrangements for the testing..... I'm extremely nervous to go through all this again.

Thank you so much Victory..... would you mind if I sometimes emailed you, outside of the forums?

Baby, I HATED... HATED the FNA .THANK GOD I only had to do it once because when they went in to operate the right side was covered with nodules too. But after taking my whole thyroid they discovered that only the left side was cancerous --- in all reality I should have pieces of my thyroid left but they took the whole thing, this is why I have had the trouble I have had getting rid of the nasty stuff!.

Yes please email me

BabyFairy and Victory, why were your needle aspirations painful? I had two, about 17 years ago, and they deadened the area before doing the aspirations. Result--didn't hurt at all, except the for shot to deaden it, which was basically nothing.

A coworker had a needle aspiration done about 3 years ago, and she said it was painful...they didn't deaden it. Why not?

I tell ya, if you have to have another one, insist that they deaden it. I know they can, as they did for both of mine. That was years ago, but if it happens again, I will insist, you can bet on it.

The results came back benign, so no cancer.....

Sylvan, They didn't deaden the area because according to the medical professionals it's best to endure the pain in order for them to have a clearer image on the ultrasound so that they can see where they are sticking the needle. When they use a deadening solution it clouds the monitor and causes them to not be able to see where they are sticking the needle. Anything to make their jobs easier ... ya know!

They didn't use a monitor because they didn't do an ultrasound on me, either time. They stuck the needle in, then took out fluid and sent it off to run tests.

Why didn't my doctors (different ones, a couple years apart) need an ultrasound back then to see where to stick the needle, I wonder? They just stuck it in there, pulled out fluid, said that since it was fluid and not solid tissue it was probably not cancerous, but they would send it off to be tested to be sure.

?????

Times change I guess. They are changing things all of the time. First two radiation treatments I had, I was hospilized in isolation for 4 days. The last 2 I had I was able to drive myself home and stay in my house isolated for only 2 days. Thank God for the changes in that because I can't stand being in a hospital room for 4 days with nothing to do. At least at home there's TV, computer, books etc. Different Doctors have different methods though. My surgeon screwed up when he operated on me though that's why I have had to have several more tests and treatments then I should have but it all turned out ok in the end, and that's the important part

I had the needle biopsy done about 10 years ago now on a suspicious nodule...hurt like hell, even with the anesthetic spray. Fortunately it was fine, but I've been on replacement hormone therapy ever since. Hope everything turns out ok Baby.
