Let's talk about anything and everything about the world of video gaming.

What are your favorite games of all time? Graphics cards, how to build or select a gaming machine and/ or components, best websites to review gaming hardware/ software, cheat codes, bogus games, etc.......

I really loved Descent. My first experience with it was on the original Sony PlayStation. I made it through all the levels without any cheats. I have it and Descent 2 for PC nowadays, and D2 has cool Virge Stealth 3D support.

I also have a collection of original arcade game ROMs running on MAME including Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Tempest, Centipede, Star Trek, Tron, Disc of Tron, Zaxxon and Battlezone since those were the ones I played at the arcade many years ago.

I don't play any of them all that much these days, just from time to time. I sold my PlayStation and the CDs back in 2000. I never got into online games at all.

Emulation - if you're into computers - you're aware of it, but just in case - let me tell you about emulators. They are a piece of software that you run on your computer, and depending on the particular emulator you are using, you can run pretty much ANY old video game.

There are emulators that let you run old Atari games, emulators that let you run old Commodore 64 games, and the list goes on and on, Sega Master System, Nintendo Entertainment System, SNES, Genesis, TurboGrafx, N64, NeoGeo (very cool) and endless amounts of arcade games.

The only trick is you have to search the internet to find the games themselves (generally referred to as "roms") but if you're even slightly internet saavy - it's not difficult at all (hint: newsgroups).

When i first found out about this, i had only dial-up service - and i had a download manager and set it to download all through the night. Basically, at this time i have hundreds of old video games from this method. Do i play them, eh - hardly - but i like the feeling of knowing i have them...sicko that i am.

disclaimer - there can be dubious legality issues involved

as for my favorite video games (not necessarily in the order listed below)

Boulderdash for that Atari 8 bit computer (also out for the C64) and now there's even an exact replica for the Gameboy Advance. There are also UNTOLD amount of remakes and copies, ad infinitum...it's addicting like nothing else - play it!!!

Fooblitzky - Atari 8 bit

Wonder Boy - Sega Master System

Lightforce - C64 - simple space shooter, very addicting

Croc - 3d platform game (akin to Mario 64) - out for various platforms, i played the PC version

Oddworld - Stranger's Wrath - XBox - sweeeeeeeeeet

Ratchet and Clank - PS2 - just the sound of picking up the pieces is so addicting

Little Computer People - C64 (think: Sims of today)

Wolfenstein 3D - 3DO version - spent weeks finding every hideable and exploring 100% of the levels. got 3/4 of the way through the game. "life" got in the way and i had to stop playing for a couple of months. i came back to play - my gamesave was corrupted - i don't think i ever quite got over that

Spy vs Spy - 8 bit computers (Atari/C64)

Alex Kidd - Sega Master System (never did finish it)

Champions of Norrath - Return to Arms - PS2 (finished it - GREAT!!)

Hunter the Reckoning - PS2/XBOX

Black Cauldron - PC

Leisure Suit Larry - PC

The Labryinth - C64

Super Mario World - SNES

Donkey Kong Country - SNES

Conker's Bad Fur Day - N64 (now out for Xbox)

I did mention this as well in my post. I have used MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator) for years and I like the DOS ones best (there are Windows versions too). A search on Google for MAME will get anyone curious about it headed in the right direction. As far as legal issues are concerned, all one really has to do is say they own the actual game hardware they obtained the ROM from at the start of each play of a game simply by typing OK. My guess is that the MAME writers put that in as some sort of legal loophole, though I never looked into it.

Game ROMs are rather small files. Tempest, for example, is just 31KB. So, a person on dialup shouldn't have much of a wait.

There are all kinds of emulators out there to run Atari, Apple, Commodore and other old software. One I have used is called Gemulator. It's freeware.

I did mention this as well in my post.

you're correct. my apologies. Admittedly, i saw the Tempest thing and (never being a particular fan of Tempest) my eyes sort of glazed over - oops - sorry about that.

You're right, the roms aren't difficult to get by any stretch. I mentioned about the dubius legality issue because i'm sure that all of our kind, caring, good citizens on MD will very much want to take that issue into high concern before contemplating the download of any game they don't actually own ...ummm.... (sorry)

the funny thing is - with many of the emulated games - some companies threw a fit (ummm....read "Nintendo" heh heh heh). People couldn't understand it because these were like very old games that were being emulated (well, not really - some of the games were fairly recent - of the time - games like many N64 hits, anyhow..........). So people were crying foul about Nintendo's sour puss attitude (i don't think Sega ever really put up any sort of fuss).

But...............fast forwarding a couple of years, to the new Nintendo Wii (wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!) - and Nintendo is going to make big bucks (i think) off of old emulated games.

Of course, if you have a laptop with an s-video port, you could run the emulator and have the video go out to your tv and play the game using a gamepad but ssshhhh - i didn't say that. Actually, i think Nintendo's idea will be GREAT (serious) and i'm looking forward to it.

The best thing about emulation - is compared to when you're playing the game on the console and you have only so many abilities to save the game - with emulation - you can save the game ANYWHERE (can you say ....Major Cheat....heh heh heh) but finally, you can finish all of those games you slaved your life over (or is that only me) struggling to finish...

Ok, well i'm off to play some Pyschonauts.....

I especially love pressing the key that acts like dropping in the quarters for credits. Oh, the money I spent in the arcades (and the occasional gas station or quick stop shop) years ago.

One of these days I'd like to put together a controller setup just like in Tron and Disc of Tron. Even with a customized keyboard and mouse configuration, it's still not the same. Other games translate to keyboard and mouse pretty well though.

I got into MAME for a bit, was fun reliving old games.

A friend of mine went full hilt, he bought a old arcade machine, gutted it, installed a monitor and computer with every MAME ROM available on it, connected joystick and buttons (electronic wiz)......ultimate game machine!

is anyone else here pysched about the Nintendo Wii? It's supposed to be released on 11/16 and i'm guessing they won't have the distribution problems exhibited in the past by the other video game companies.

Normally, I ~~never~~ buy a video game console upon launch - preferring to wait a couple of years for it to come way down in price. But i dunno, with the new controller scheme and the low price point ($250) - well "low" considering the prices of the other consoles - i'm thinking i may just treat myself. I might actually buy a couple of games on launch too, Metal Slug Anthology and also Rayman.

I think the PSP is slowly beginning to die a humble death. Although technologically superior to the Nintendo DS - the DS has better games, a wider variety of games, better gameplay (though, please forgive me if i refuse to pay $20 or $30 or even $5 for what amounts to a portable electronic dog - oops - did that like 20 years ago with the C64 "Little Computer People").

Some of my favorite pc games are Disciples 2, Everquest 2, Fantasy General(an older DOS strategy game, but had a great cd soundstrack), Gothic 1-3, Elder Scrolls: Morrowind, Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, Warlords Battlecry 3 and too many other to list.
Most of these games require a high end pc to get the most out of. When I read a pc game box, I usually take the recommended requirements and consider those the minimum requirements and disregard what they say the minimum requirements are because if you play using the minimum requirements, likely the game will run poorly and not look near as good as it could if you had above the recommended requirements. If you want the best gaming experience, always try to be well above the recommended requirements.

For console games, I'd say Soul Calibur 3 is my favorite that I've played so far.

I am currently playing battlefield 2142. I stoped playing battlefield 2 because of all the cheating and never ending updates. I use to play world of warcraft but that just took up too much time. Halo was a big favorite of mine for a long time and im really upset about halo 2 for the pc being for vista only. I think that my all time favorites have to be age of empires and diablo, still playing those after all this time.

Well, I really like Rainbow six Vegas and Ghost Recon on the Xbox 360. Also, Resistance Fall of Man for the Ps3. I'm looking forward to Unreal Tournament the most, since it will be released on both the PC and Ps3 this Fall. Of course, Halo 3 will be on my list as well.
