Microsoft Word 2002 error |

Whenever I attempt to insert a symbol in a word-processing document via the Insert --> Symbol option in the menu, Word 2002 crashes. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Word 2002 without effect. I googled for a solution and learned that occasionally a faulty printer driver can be the problem. I uninstalled and reinstalled the software for my printer. (I also verified that I had the most recent drivers.) It had no effect. I am using Windows XP, SP2. Does anybody know why this happens and how I can fix it?

"Quester", check your autocorrect funtions. When in word, click on tools, then autocorrect. Then check the "autoFormat" as you type to be sure it is checked. I hope this is it!

I read some of that link "Waterfire", it reminded me one time a few years ago, I had to uninstall OutLook because it conflicted with Outlook Express. I had a lot of errors and crashes at the time. That fixed all the problems. Not sure if this could be the case for Quester though. Computers are so finikie like women sometimes. lol

I can't help you with your Word problem, but if you are needing to use the Character Symbols, you might try an alternate route.
Go to:
Start All Programs Accessories System Tools Character Map
See if you can copy/paste from there to Word. I have used it in MD posts, and it works great.

Thanks for all the suggestions and links. I regret to report that I still have not fixed the problem. I considered upgrading to Microsoft Works Suite Version 8, but am not sure that is the right solution. I would rather figure out what caused the problem in case it is a system error that needs to be repaired before it destroys the whole drive.

I like said sometimes an error message will help but not in this case.
Things I would try
Try to remember if you installed or updated any software (including drivers) before this error with Word began, if so uninstall or look for a solution from the authors.
Scan for viruses and spyware
Run check disk
Install Word into another location
Check to see if any updates for Word.

Could possibly be a corrupt Normal.dot template. Close Word. Browse to the location for Normal.dot [C:\Documents and settings\Application data\Microsoft\Templates] Rename Normal.dot to Normal.old Restart Word...a new Normal.dot will be created.
Uninstalling and reinstalling isn't always a clean process and remnants of corrupt files can be left behind. Renaming the Normal.dot template will ensure that Word creates a new, clean one.

If you are referring to the Repair option the installation CD, I have indeed tried that. To date no solution has been effective and it may be that I will have no choice but to reformat my hard drive and reinstall all of my programs.

Questor,
For what it's worth, I found the following on a message board.

"S. Diva" wrote: Word 2002 quits every time I try to click on "Insert Symbol" - does anyone know why this might be happening and what I need to do to fix it? I've got a huge project and it entails inserting a lot of these special characters. Please HELP!!!!

I do not know if you still have the problem... I recommend you go to http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdate/default.aspx and check for any updates and update your Office XP Pro. I did it and it is working fine now. Good luck.

The link that you provided, Tim, only works if you use Office XP Pro. I probably should have mentioned earlier that I am using the Word 2002 word-processor that was bundled with Microsoft Works Suite 2003. I have not upgraded to the latest version of Microsoft Works Suite because I do not know why this is happening. Word 2002 worked just fine up until perhaps two months ago.
The irony is that the latest version of Office XP was preinstalled on my computer when I bought it, but I would have had to pay almost $500 to activate it!
