While I know some of you morally object to these sites, I prefer to "assemble" my own brand of CD's. I have paid out thousands and thousands of dollars over the years for my music collection so I feel no remorse in being able to find those "hard to find" tunes that I love.
I refuse to pay to join sites like Napster etc. The one I used to use was BearShare and after I downloaded it my Norton went nuts seeking out all the ad-aware and spyware that "isn't" in it. After it removed the offending file the program wouldn't work any more.
Any ideas?

WW, I absolutely, 100%, no-doubt-about-it agree with you on this one. The record companies have gotten their money from me ten times over. I've paid literally thousands of dollars for my music collection, over years, only to see everybody get their music for free when the original Napster came out. I couldn't take advantage of it back then because I only had dial up, so I never downloaded anything---then they went under. So now I don't feel the slightest bit criminal getting free stuff.
As for the adware and spyware, that's the price you pay for getting the songs free. I don't know of any free service that doesn't have it. You can always download iTunes and be rid of it all, but then you'll have to pay 99cts for every song.
Btw, I use Bearshare and like it because most of the songs are actually real and not bogus spam, song loops, or truncated.

Hi Wicked
I use Ares, go to http://aresgalaxy.sourceforge.net/ and download the program. It is very good and I have never had a problem with spyware or adware.
Make sure you have your virus protection on as mine has caught a few before they got in.
Happy Downloading
Jim

There's a fee involved with the site you suggested?
Jim? There's a fee on yours too. Have I got the right sites?
Dar
PS Motown? LimeWire is the "sister" of BearShare.. BearShare is the one that got my Norton internet and ad-aware hopping like crazy.

It is not the record companies--who almost certainly deserve it--who are getting ripped off. It is the songwriters. Songwriters, like musicians, get paid a royalty for every album sold. Some songwriters have seen their royalties (i.e. their income) plunge by fifty to eighty percent because more people are downloading music rather than buying it.

I use iTunes. I usually buy music from new artists so I enjoy supporting them.

like frenchoak said i also use emule, just make sure your connectable if your using a router you need to forward ports for fast download speeds, emule is best for old stuff however if u want the latest stuff of anythink u need to use bittorent sites and again forwarding the right ports are key to fast downloads as lots of isp throttle common ports. i can get any xbox, xbox 360 game or anthink i want for piddley squid, this is what makes broadband worthwhile in my view. at least your getting somthink in return for the electric bills u pay and the isp u pay.

I tried Ares and had a lot of trouble downloading it. It appears as a "bin" and then won't open or install.

I use Morpheus.......its waaaayyyyyy better than the old napster or kazaa. The biggest difference I can see, is that it lets you download from several users at the same time......you are getting one song file, but you are getting it from multiple users at the same time.......its lightning fast, and you never hear any breaks in the songs whatsoever.

Questor, I used to feel a bit guilty (not much) about the artists getting ripped off with all the file sharing, until a read a few things about how struggling artists/bands themselves downloaded free stuff (or getting promos from radio stations) like crazy in their salad days, before they started making money off their music. They said it was a great way to hear musical influences and hone their craft because they certainly couldn't afford getting CD's. Yeah, right.....talk about hypocrites?
I still buy music when I can't find what I'm looking for on the fileshares, but I always check them first.

Hi Wicked,
I just downloaded it again and the installer downloads. I will go step by step.
Go to the Ares page. At the top hit download.
Go to the Seattle Washington mirror site anhit download.
A warning should come up and ask you if you want to RUN or SAVE it. Click RUN.
It should automatically install. Ares is OPEN SOURCE and is absolutely FREE
Good Luck
Jim

Unless you are very well protected and understand about malware, spyware, viri, trojans, and hijackers there are no good shareware sites. Be very very careful or you may find that your computer is not your own any more.
