I just got this today on Yahoo Messenger. . .

chat_software.downloads_wq (12/7/06 3:47:13 PM): Want to read the conversations your husband, wife and kids are having on Yahoo and MSN? This and other great programs can be found here: http://chat-detectives.com

First of all, I would not even bother with some site that sends me IM spam. Secondly, it's probably just some type of keylogger or message archive reader that is bundled with adware and/or spyware.

Bottom line: don't waste your sweet precious time on this one.

Are you looking for a program that will let you monitor what's happening on your computer?

I had "SpectorPro" on my computer for a couple of years, keeping an eye on my kids' behavior online when they were younger. It was a really good program. Screen captures, key strokes, etc.

If it's still out there, I'd recommend it.

No, Razz...it popped up on my screen as a message from Yahoo IM. All it said was one of those audibles that says something to the effect of "I think it's best if you turn off your computer right now." The name of the poster was Chat Detective(s?). When I googled it, it came up as a tool for Law Enforcement to check IM's and email!! That scared me, to put it mildly. Was just checking with you guys to see if any of y'all had any additional information.

Door, the Chat Detective Law Enforcement tool and that Yahoo IM involve two completely separate things. The Yahoo IM was just spam. I looked at their site. That Chat-Detectives site has a program that lets a person open and read IM Archives stored on a person's computer. That's not anything new at all.

So are you saying (I had the same thing happen to as Door, the IM audible popped up with a written message saying I should do everyone a favor and turn off my computer). And its id was Chat Detective.

So was that message is suppose to be spam?

It is certainly malware related. You should run a couple of scans to remove it.There are plenty of good free utilities such as Spyware Terminator,AVG Antispyware and A-Squared.One of these should pick it up.

I have a friend that someone is trying to look at their accounts to view chats... is this Chat Detectives a Free program? I have this pop up on my computer too. I just X it out. I am Very Leary of it. I figured it was a key logger for them to watch ME... all in all.

I had some guy stalk me and I am just sure that he hijacked my account one time. His other screenname that I new about showed up in the top of my yahoo messenger list... not in the friends but in the frame structure of the window itself... was very faint. I started copying files and sending them to another account... then Boom... I could not use my account anymore... it took me 10 days... finally through yahoo chat with a tech to get it going again.

He tried to send me a link about a week before. I just X'd the window. The day this hijack happened, he came online so I asked him what the link had been for and he didnt reply... a few hours later is when his other sreenname appeared very faint in the window structure. Just too frickin weird !!

I want to learn all I can about all this crap... its too bad we have to be scared of people online... there has been other instances too from a few other people that seem to figure out I am on... even when I am invisible... Such BS. I dont have myself visible in the other yahoo places... so I cant figure out how they do it.

I have been told that they know when I am talking to other people too. Does anyone have some knowledge that they can share with me to help me really be Incognito and help me figure out if someone has access to see my computer?

I know about the Remote Assistance and dont have anyone listed for access. I allowed someone to try and do it one time, but he said he couldnt get in. Could this port be left open without me knowing? I thought it closed out when i closed the invitation. I know about the (Screen Viewer program)... I have that for my computers that are networked with my kids... but I dont have them operating yet since we just got all them set up... I dont see anything to alert me that anyone else can access them either.

Hope someone can help me figure out who is Hacking me !! Or is it that they are just screwing with my head? Too many things are said by several guys that makes me think I have something that is accessible with my knowledge.

Interesting question, Chat Detective.

Suspicious sounding to be sure. Unfortunately most IM programs are not terribly secure. I think this may be helpful..

Chat Detective - Investigative Software Tool (for AOL chat only)
This tool allows the investigator to log and maintain Instant Message conversations along with other background information. The logs produced are in a format that is consistent with evidence gathering guidelines. This tool is deployed with a private agency only. For further information, see our Contacts page.

Apparently it is their product, but seemingly only for AOHell. So if you are using something else, it's unlikely that's the same thing. But if you are using AOL, then that's probably what they're referring to. However they don't seem to elaborate at their site, which raises eyebrows too. I've dealt with one of these "Detective" Sites in the past and it was a real hokey, scam operation they had going on. So when I see that sort of thing, talking about forensics and investigators and the like, it raises big red flags.

Here's the link, but there's nothing more about it at the site as far as I can tell. , although I was only there briefly. You might want to look at more pages there if you use AOL. There are other similar programs there too.

Supposedly Forsenic Software Producer

HonestNiceWoman, I would suspect you are quite right. My first suggestion for you would be to go to this site (below) and run a full scan for Trojans, Key-Loggers, Viruses, Malware and the like. They are even a little overzealous about what they call Viruses/Trojans/Hacker Tools..

Trend Micro's Housecall

But too much is better than too little. And don't worry they are very reputable. I've done it many times and have recommended them to dozens of folks for similar problems. All went very well. .

This will very likely tell you a lot about your system and what might be wrong. But be prepared for quite a bit of time in the process. It's worth it though, having the suspicions that you do.

There are quite a few other things you can do beyond that, but that's a very good first step. Be sure and note everything the scan tells you. But you can do that at the end. In fact I if I recall correctly, you can print out the results page, or pages and/or save them to a file. But I think you'll be surprised at how thorough they are.

Oh, one last thing. You probably have a virus scanner on-board. But they are all a bit different, and Trend is rated right up at the top of the commercial products. Still though, their online scanner seems to detect more than does their on-machine scanner. I can't quite explain that one. But I use and recommend them both.
