Tried to set this old router up this weekend to accommodate my second computer. USB connection from dsl modem runs to this pc. Hooked up ethernet cable from modem to router, then patch cable from port on router to other pc. It didn't work. It worked last year with same modem and same two pc's. I got so into it, I went to wally world to buy another router...but there were routers, adapters, network cards. NO plain wired router to hook up two pc's. The pc lingo was way over my head. BUT last year I hooked this router up and had both pc's running....go figure.
Yes, I've looked up site after site on internet. Read all they have to say. Too complicated, and I sure didn't do all that junk last year. Any advice?

Thanks, Seal. This router was a hand-me-down so I only got a cord and the blue/black box. I probably can find a phone number for LinkSys on the internet, and I will try it again sometime. I was just so afraid that I would screw up my connection to this computer through my speedstream dsl modem....
Thanks for answering. I appreciate it.

If it worked before, it should work again.
Is it all hooked up correctly? Is it possible you have a defective cable? Are you getting any error messages?
I have never used DSL or a router, so I can only offer some basic ideas at this point DW.

I suggested calling Linksys because I have had two or their routers that did not work when first installed. They walked me through some trouble shooting steps and it was the default configuration that was the problem. Anyway they got it working.

Door, run the ethernet cable from the DSL Modem over to the Internet port (or port 0) in the back of the router. Then an ethernet cable to each computer out of two of the 4 ports (figuring a small 5 port router).
Start up the router, wait a little while, then start up the computers. That should do it.
I'm assuming a ton of things on this. That you're using the DSL Modem in bridge mode and letting your ISP give your modem an IP number, and that your router doesn't have IP info in it, and that you're just using it from default settings, and that also your PCs are set on their default settings (which will mean they are set to accept IP numbers from your router and your router will do the communicating with the modem).
I hope that helps. I know my answer was fairly technical and figured a lot, but really you should be able to just click and play with this stuff without a lot of intervention into getting it's settings right.
Btw, the answer of calling Linksys is an excellent one as well. Live support can be way better than trying to figure out what people like me are typing! Good luck either way!

Buy one from Road Runner.
Sorry, I work for Road Runner. This is all I do in a day.
I take calls from Americans (I'm in Canada) and it's usually because they need a new router. They're generally not pleased with that.

If it worked before, it should work again. Not necessarily. Routers are equipment. What is equipment good for?
Have you checked to see if your drivers are installed? If you can directly connect your modem to the back of your PC and get online, you know it's definitely a problem with your router. I wouldn't suggest calling your ISP unless they provided you with that router. They can only do so much, like bypassing the router and directly connecting to make sure your modem isn't the issue.

Door, I apologize, I missed one thing because I'm used to regular network gear or cable modem.
You have probably had to enter your username and password to connect through the DSL. If you entered it into the DSL Modem when you first set things up, then you should be able to do as Hidden mentions which is connect directly to the modem with your PC and away you go!
If not, and you created a PPPoE connection from your computer and you double click that to create the connection and 'then' go surf the web or whatever, you'd need to put that information into the router to have the router create the connection for you instead, and then once the router did that (if it 'can' create a connection like that in it's setup) then your computers should be able to connect without a problem, and you wouldn't have to create the connection from your PC.
DSL modems add that one more step in getting out that add a bit more hassle, but it's something that you can definitely work with honest!
If you go to linksys' site, click Support at the top, and then click the drop down in the --Please select a product-- and choose your router. They have several different versions, I suggest version 1, or check the label on the router, it might tell you.
Again, hope that helps!

USB connection from dsl modem runs to this pc. Hooked up ethernet cable from modem to router, then patch cable from port on router to other pc. It didn't work. It worked last year with same modem and same two pc's Make sure you are not trying to use both the Ethernet and the USB connections from the DSL router at the same time. You have to plug the Ethernet cord from the modem into the router (on the WAN port), then plug both computers into the router as well (on 2 of the LAN ports).
Make sure to configure your settings using the router's web interface (see the manual; download a copy if you don't have a printed one). Since you have DSL, you'll probably need to configure it for a PPPOE connection.
You might want to download & apply the latest version of the firmware just for good measure.
Good Luck,
Cowboy X

This issue has probably been resolved already but i thought i'd toss in my two cents because its the same router i use.
First of all be very careful on firmware updates as it can render that router useless if anything goes wrong! Thought I fried mine once when it was interrupted during an update. (blinking red light = still ok / solid red light = TOAST! lol
Most Speedstream DSL modems (DSL in general) already have routing capabilities anyway and you really only need a small 4 port switch or hub linked to the modem with straight through patch cables. Some even have ports for multiple pc's in the back of the modem. In my case, using Road Runner (cable) a router is needed for multiple pc connections.
I myself would just link the modem to the router then branch off from there using patch cables and eliminate the USB (twisted 4 pair is faster than any serial connection IMO). You only need to be sure the router is seeing the modem if linked properly
Easy way to test if the router is seeing the modem (internet) is have at least one pc connected to the linked router using the 192.168.1.1 addy in your browser. If you get a login screen you should be good to go. By default the username is left blank and the password is admin but you shouldnt have to do anything in any settings as the connectivity is excellent with that model Linksys router if wired correctly. Resetting that router to factory defaults wouldnt hurt either. This is done by holding in the reset button for 30 seconds which is the first thing I would do.
Boot sequence is important too ... modem > router > pc's
I have always been pleased with any Linksys products on my network for their connectivity and free support if needed!
