Wondering what software you're using for IM security. Being cheap (and broke), I downloaded and installed IMSecure from ZoneLabs. It was free and I already use ZoneAlarm.

Donna: (Rather than Froggi...)
I use ZoneAlarm for one of my firewalls, but am unfamiliar with IM Secure. How do I get it??? Any tricks to downloading? I'm quite interested.....thanks...

The free download (for personal use only) is the smaller red button sort of in the middle of the page. The installation is pretty self explanatory as was the setup.
So far the only downside I've seen is that unless the person you are communicating with uses the same product, the encryption is useless. But I could be wrong....
Hoping someone who knows more will jump in....I'm still looking at the Pro to see if it's worth the upgrade (under $20).

I have used both the free version and the pro version of IM Secure and cannot report any difference. As noted, the encryption feature is worthless unless the person that you are chatting with also has IM Secure installed. IM Secure does have a spam blocker that blocks messages from people not on your friend list, but that feature is also available in Yahoo IM. In sum, it is probably not worth the expense of registering it. The free version should be just fine for most casual users.

Thanks, RQ. I have to admit to not being aware of all the security issues involved in using messenger type services. Someone recently mentioned that sharing photos via IM gives the other person access to your computer. YIKES! Guess I won't be doing that!!

Hmmmm I don't often use my IM, but I don't have any security in place for it. BUt if this thing about photos is true, then I deffo will get some in place.

All the articles I find are about securing the corporate environment....IM Secure has been the only free, personal use product I have found. It's limited but don't think it blocks the access hole when sharing photos. The recommendation I read was to store your photos online and post a link to them, rather than doing the direct share.

I only accept IM from someone I know.....BUT once I've met someone here, how much do I really know. I use IMSecure, no popups, but did share some photos back & forth. Have since read that opens up access to my computer (don't know if IMSecure would stop that or not). Thoughts?

I have, knock on wood, never gotten a virus. I manage several domains, have over 25 active POP accounts, get hundreds of emails a day and visit way more sites than I should. LOL! I use multiple layers of protection from a firewall, to a mail pre-screen, to anti-virus software and run things like SpyBot, SpySweeper and Ad-Aware every once in a while.
But this whole IM thing is new to me....I avoided when AOL first started with it over 12 years ago, it was a time waster to me and if I was online I was working. My kids talked me into finally loading it last spring. I have used it for chatting a couple of times with folks I've met in the dating sites and hopefully have used okay judgment in their selection. Most folks I just tell "No IMs".
Thanks for the tips...

To me this program is something to kluge your computer, follow jamie’s advice and you should not have problems.
Like him I have never had a virus and the only security I have is a firewall (I do need this since some of the connections I have …uh require it….LOL)
One thing to add, if you do accept a program from someone please scan it before running even iff they tell you it has been scanned.

Thanks, WaterFire. I just also downloaded Trillian and Miranda to test them out. Gave up on Trillian but Miranda seems to be a nice small, tight program. Doubt it offers any additional security but I hate all the extra garbage with Yahoo IM.

On Yahoo, you can still use an older version of Messenger if you don't want all the extra stuff that comes with the latest version. I am still using version 5 build 1254.
YahElite is my choice for an alternative to Yahoo Messenger. I never liked Trillian.
