My cousin is having a problem with the BSOD on Win XP. He is getting a black screen too after restart. Does anyone know how to fix this, so I can help him with it? Could it be a virus?

BSOD can occurr for many different reasons. It is difficult to make any sort of diagnosis with out specific information on how, what, where, when this occurrs. If he does not have any valuable files that need to be saved it may be easier to format the hard drive and reload XP and the programs than it will be to figure out what the exact problem is. Are you getting an error code? That can be helpful but it will require some research to figure it out. And even then some of the available information is vague.

I had a problem with that once or twice and the error code was well documented however there was no straighforward solution. I just started over. Pain in the butt but it worked out well.

For me I always like to know WHY someone is getting the Blue Screen. First thing I would check is for file corruption viruses, power supply, then memory, etc. Yes it takes time and in some cases it might be quicker to reformat but then if it is hardware this will not solve the problem.

Yep that's the problem. You are right about the vague information.

That's right it won't. But it will confirm that the problem is not software related. He didn't (warrior) say if it just started or it is on a fresh system. If it just started and the computer was running fine previously then it probably is not hardware unless something suddenly went ary. If it is not hardware then it has to be sorftware and a reformat and reload will correct that, or it should. The two times I had that problem one was a bad OS load in the first place and the other was a MB that was not functioning correctly.

Read this as a starting point:

Post or Google Search some of the information in your BSOD.

The BSOD was immortalized in verse by Peter Rothman in his Salon.com haiku.

Windows XP crashed.
I am the Blue Screen of Death.
No one hears your screams.

I have seen many BSOD on computers, the last two:

One was memory (mine last week) which took 10 mins to find and fix, the other was virus (about 100 infections…a friend’s computer) which took 20 mins to fix. As you can see down time was much less than if I had formatted.

The thing is too many people only have one partition so if they format without thinking to back up their personal data everything is lost. In really bad cases I will take the hard drive out, save all data then reformat and install.

That's exactly why I have either had 2 hard disk drives or a single HDD with 2 partitions on my systems.

Big time!

People really need a OS partition and a data partition.
