Give it a couple of years for others to work the bugs out.

MS will have a 0.5 Gb service pack ready in six months likethey did with XP.
When I was with Newport News Shipbuilding, Bill Gates' investment company procured 10% of their sstock one night. The joke was that MS was going to buy all of NNS, prematurely comission the new aircraft carriers, and then send out the patch six months later.

For the first time ever I'm getting the newest Windows when it comes out...and I've been working with computers for 15 years!
What's important to me is support for the latest hardware standards. Support for hot-swap of SATA drive, large drives, processor features, and other things that you can only do now with a load of service packs for 2K or XP.
For work, I need to make sure all the code I write works properly in Vista. So there's reason enough for me to get it right away.

The reports are coming in and they are grim. Supposedly Microsoft is pulling all of the XP products off the shelf so now you will be forced to use the Vista software. It already has a buttload of problems namely, just trying to figure out how to use it. Even with the first service pack out it doesn't correct the problems of playing video games or complex business software which easily runs on XP and earlier versions of Windows...... way to go Microsoft. You'll probably spend 10's of hours justing getting aquianted with it if not overcoming the installations of your personal programs.
It's just better and safer to buy a second computer.

I just bought my new computer with Vista on 11 Feb. It was great until I installed my printer. After that I kept getting a message that Internet Explorer is not connected to windows or something like that when I tried getting back on internet. Well....FINALLY....I did find the cure......uninstall the OMNIPAGE se (it somehow gets installed when putting in the printer)....NOW I can just click on the internet button and get online. Vista is nice.....and it does have it's bugs but so did Windows XP on my last computer. This too shall pass

I would wait six months or so for the first serious patch set to arrive before even considering going to Vista... Operating systems are notoriously buggy on first release... My standard wait time is six months to one year before taking the plunge...

For Vista users, WGA is more dangerous on these systems. It can incorrectly indicate you have tried to tamper with the OS, when it was done by another app that Defender is suppose to protect you from. Defender fails in this regard too, so if you are not careful, you end up in reduced functionality mode.

Give it a couple of years for others to work the bugs out. MicroSoft is notorious for releasing products that require constant patching to resolve vulnerabilities...
I think I'll stick with my XP Professional until it's no longer supported by them... which they are also notorious for doing... ceasing support on their operating systems...
*gotta love technology*

I think I'll stick with my XP Professional until it's no longer supported by them. I would still use an operating system even if it was not supported. I run Win98SE on two machines here and switch to MS-DOS when I prefer to do things without Windows (MS-DOS supports use of a mouse and many programs even have drop down menus and a Graphical User Interface). Besides, I can support an older OS myself.

It's always risky to jump into any new MS Operating system early on.XP has been around for 5+ years and only now after 2 service packs and countless other patches is it reasonably secure and reliable (relatively speaking).
You should certainly take time to check that all your hardware and vital software is fully compatible,or you could have many headaches ahead.

To me, just lots of hype. Just getting used to my windows XP. Reply: I'm still using Windows ME. I won't even go to Windows XP much less Vista. Notice, I didn't say "upgrade".. it's more like DOWNGRADING...tee hee..
The product activation was the main reason I won't switch. In Vista, there's crap like product verification, where Microsoft basically has given itself the right to shut down your operating system remotely, if they believe you violated their "EULA".
I've never pirated this software, nor would I ever, but I'm sorry, I value my privacy and I want to have complete control over my computer. I don't want a piece of software with a back door or drop-dead mechanism installed in it. It's kinda hard to get interested in an OS, when you feel like you don't have any control over your own computer.
I plan to use Windows 98SE and MS-DOS for a very, very long time to come. I agree with you Tim, but as for DOS, I don't even use that anymore - it's obsolete. I use something called Dosbox, and it's awesome (not to mention, it's free!). It runs Dos programs on a pentium that M$Dos can't. Also, there's FreeDOS, which is a whole new open source, freeware operating system that runs all DOS programs.
One more thing: Anyone looking for an alternative to Windows, that will one day soon be able to run all your windows programs, should have a look at an exciting new operating system being developed called ReactOS. You can find it at http://www.reactos.org. While it is still being worked on at this time. it is expected to have the capability to run most of your windows software and hardware by mid 2008!

Reactos is very promising as a direct Windows replacement.Exactly how compatible it will be remains to be seen.
There are other options, such as Freespire which offers a Linux distro with a very familiar 'Windows like' interface.

Like the others here, I don't plan to "upgrade" anytime soon - at least not until the first service pack. If you run it before the first service pack, you are essentially a paid beta tester (with you as the payer and tester).
I installed Vista as a dual-boot just to play with. It looks different.. that's about all I can say about it right now. Maybe I'll have more to say in a year or so (after I really begin to use it).

no I do not trust it enough yet to dual boot. Good point. Maybe I should keep it on one of my old 10 GB drives and keep all other HD's out of the machine when I boot from it... then take the Vista HD back out before booting XP again.
Good ol' Microsoft. At least Bill gives away half the money he makes.

Printer drivers and/or support software might be a problem, try the manufacture’s website.
