I kinda know how a tv works, but not sure how monitors are designed....when i bootup the monitor screen has been staying dark(no raster) for longer periods up to many hours...i switched monitors and thought that cured the problem, but this morning the monitor was dark for 15 min as comp. booted...
could this be a problem with both old monitors, or vid card or what else???
Is the raster controlled by circuitry in monitor or vid card?...seems like i did turn on one once without being connected to computer and it did have a raster...but when on computer and showing dark screen , then vid card has some control over raster or brightness???,,
using small hd's with os98 on one and os95 the other...
thanks

The monitor produces raster on it's own.
You problem is in the computer.
Try physically removing and reinserting the video card or change it out entirely.
Test the monitor on another computer.
Make sure you are getting AC power to the monitor.

Thanks, Tim....
While pwr was off i did "jiggle" vid card....will reseat it as you suggested...
I have two monitors..both old....the one i am using now has messed up colors and pic. width, but it did come up with screen on bootup.....will shut down and see if original monitor will work now.....
it has been an intermittant problem which has gotten worse...would almost rather have smoke which helps to find problem....
thanks for info....

I see.
Well then, since both monitors are old, it's quite possible they both have problems. You could have problems with both monitors and the computer. Anything's possible.
Since you are basically just swapping out entire devices you should be able to localize the trouble by the process of elimination. You will need known working devices to accomplish this however.

The first step would be to change the graphics card, since although not impossible,it's unlikely both monitors have the same fault. It seems likely to be one or more faulty capacitors on the video card,or perhaps even the motherboard. The high temperature in some cases often dries out capacitors over time.
