I live in the boonies, and dial-up is my only option, I have been experiencing what I believe to be a loss of my phone connection. How do I know for sure? I assume it is like a hic-up, nothing tells me I'm disconnected, but I am stuck, nothing works (except the moties still blink ) I get a page cannot be displayed, wrong addres, ( i'm only going through MD threads ) so I have to disconnect and reconnect. I will say things are working much better since I updated Explorer. So, before I take the puter in to get looked at. Is there anyway of checking to see if I am holding my phone connection through out .........( one other reason I think it may be my connection, is a friend of mine turned on their webcam and the pic on my end froze, and they had to start it up again.........this happened for the entire time we were on. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't think the cam and dial up are really connected, mine does it occasionally using DSL.

I would suggest ....

1) making sure your garbage cookies, cache and temp files are cleaned in IE, not necessarily a connection helper but it never hurts ... ( also, try Firefox if you haven't yet )

2) run your regular Windows utilities ( disc defrag, disc cleaner and all that, again just good basic maintenance )

3). get a registry cleaner and run it ( CCleaner does hard drive/browser/registry cleanup, and its free )

4) download a utility to test/optimize your dial up connection and keep you connected .... many are free, can get {email address removed}, aplusfreeware.com, and countless others

5) make sure you have all of your Windows updates installed

6) see if your modem has any available updated drivers

7) open your PC case and blow out any dust with a can of compressed air ( dust can make things heat up and start to fail )

No guaranteed fixes here, but maybe something will help.

Blu, do you have call waiting on your phone line? If so, then make sure your dialer is disabling call waiting otherwise when someone tries to call in, your internet connection drops.

Check for noise and static on your phone line by picking up the phone and dialing 1 and then listen. It should be quiet, except for a slight hiss and the occasional, very faint background sounds like dialing, etc. If there is static or a hum, get it fixed. Dial the 1 and listen when you are not connected to the Internet.

Use a better web browser like Opera or K-Meleon (or Firefox if your computer is fairly new).

To see if you are still connected to your Internet provider when the trouble occurs, just pick up your phone and listen. You should still hear the modem noise.

What are your connection speeds? Being far from the telephone switching office is known to be a source of trouble all its own.

Does your ISP support V.92? You could get a new modem (they are cheap).

Server not found

Firefox can't find the server at www.matchdoctor.com.

This one of the pages I get , I will contact the phone co. to check the line. I have a new phone line from the box, and there is no difference.

* Check the address for typing errors such as
ww.example.com instead of
www.example.com

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

You can check your internet speed here :

http://us.mcafee.com/root/speedometer/default.asp

If you have a poor connection it's quite possible that some sites (those containing a lot of graphics) will time out.

The connection has timed out

The server at www.matchdoctor.com is taking too long to respond.

* The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
moments.

* If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
connection.

* If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

I had 40 kbps, since the phone co. was here, I have had 40+kb. but it still locks up within minutes, and now I have realized it is only on MD. I just spent 30+ minutes reading my mail with no problem, logged on here, and locked up, before i could post this.........Oh well........

I would say its cause of your dial up internet account. Maybe its not pushing the speed as much as it should and thats why it times out on you. Like there is so much info that can come through after a while it gives up.

Too bad you cant get highspeed.

Try another ISP and see if things are any better.

Ace Web has a free trial and you don't have to install any dialer software unless you want to.

http://www.aceweb.com

See if you have undocumented access numbers that will work better. To find those numbers, pick up your phone and dial sequentially up or down from a known working access number that you are now using. For example: if you have a number like 275-0005, try 275-0000, 0001, 0002, 0003, 0004, 0006 and so on. If you hear a modem answer, then try it with your Internet dial up. Sometimes an access number for another service provider will work for other services. You just have to try them and see what happens.

You can also ask the phone company to run a line test...by law they have to when requested.

I have had them out twice, I just want to make sure the problem is not in my puter.

But here is another problem I need help with,I have AVG free edition, and after my scan it shows I have "embeded files"? The infected files are.-user32dll, and ntuskml.exe. I tried to read how to fix them, seems confusing, any help, and could this be my problem? I found a link to 'registry mechanic" they want $30 to fix some ( 629 to be exact ) problems, is it worth it? I already paid for registry smart, that fixed a bunch of problems, but obviously not all of them. Any advice would be appreciated. I had to log back on 59 times Easter Sunday.
