I am planning to buy an LCD monitor within the next couple of weeks and was wondering if anybody has any specific brand recommendations. I am considering Samsung right now, but I will consider just about any brand except Gateway (which I loathe.) Thanks in advance!

I really love my HP new computer sytem I just purchased a few weeks ago. Came with the LCD monitor. This brand and model I have was recommended built to last. The monitor can be adjusted on contrast with touch of the buttons. Sound adjustments on monitor and keyboard as well. Easy to keep clean from dust and takes little desk top space too!
But what ever brand you choose, I sure you will love it!
Oh forgot to mention on the screen cleaning, don't use any chemical cleaners. Use wet/dry wipes or a lint free damp cloth. I also use a small soft bristle paint brush to keep dust of it.

Samsung makes good monitors, just get one that has a fast response time...8ms or lower. You might want to consider one that has DVI and D-Sub ports.

Thanks for the tip, waterfire. I had not considered those factors. I have not yet purchased the monitor because I have a fluorescent workshop lamp directly above my desk in my office which cannot be relocated and I am concerned about the effect of that constant glare on a LCD monitor. Would that diminish the useful life of an LCD monitor? Do those type of monitors reflect light more readily than the older monitors?

Since LCD monitors do not have glass there is no glare and I have never heard of light affecting the screen life of one.
You will love LCD, to me they are much easier on the eyes.

I have a DELL LCD Monitor it used to belong to my sisters pc but after having issues with her dell pc i took it. I also took the old hard drives and put them in enclosures so i can use them as external hard drives. But this dell pc has been great as i dont notice any ghosting or dead pixels and when ive played 3 computer games i bought they all played amazingly.
Now if i wanted to i would get one of those Samsung LCD monitors. My friend has one and its 100% clear and all that.

Sansung is certainly worth your look and if you are looking around you might want to also check out ViewSonic they make a very nice one and are usually very fairly priced. Best of luck and you will love it when you get it which ever one you chose.

I'm currently using a Viewsonic VA902b LCD monitor and have been happy with it so far. Its got a fast response time, so there have been no noticeable ghosting effects when I play a fast paced game on it. Be careful of dead pixels though(a.k.a. bright dots). When I got mine, it had several dead pixels on it, but the place I bought it from(Newegg)had a policy of not being able to return a monitor for dead pixels unless there were more than 7 if I remember right. Luckily, the dead pixels were near the edge of the screen, and usually I don't notice them unless I am looking closely for them.
I'm really looking forward to the new OLED screens coming out soon, they use less power, are lighter and take up less space. I saw a 20 inch model made by Toshiba(if I remember correctly) that was demonstrated at a computer show that looked really nice. Here's some more info on OLED monitors for those who may be interested. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organic_light-emitting_diode

Ok that is cool giant but wikki is not a reputable source of information of any kind. It has been banned from usniversitites as a source that is credible. Not only is it not accepted now but you can get penalized if you use it as a source in any of your course work. It really stinks. Is there some other source on this OLED item?

Thank you very very much.
When they say that these LED's are organic do you think that may be a result of research into glowing insects that has been going on for quite some time. Does anyone know what the organic source for electrical excitement is?

Thanks for the advice, folks. I bought an NEC MultiSync 90GX2 19" LCD monitor. As I suspected, however, the fluorescent light does indeed interfere with the display, so I will have to obtain some sort of shield to block the light above it. The resolution is certainly better, but the fellow who reviewed the monitor at Amazon was definitely right: NEC monitors are very bright. I had to turn down the brightness by almost 50%! Apart from that, I am quite satisfied with my new monitor.
