As you well know, I have been having problems staying on line. I have tried everything, I even have the phone company coming back out just to make sure. But here is something I have noticed, when I was downloading emails, (videos ) while roaming on MD< my puter works fine, but if I start to post, especially a long one, while I'm typing, I lose me connection, so as long as the puter is always busy, I can stay logged on for hours, but if I close all my tabs, and just say ......write this post, I have to re- log on. Does this make any sense to anybody? Or is this just a coincidence? One of the reasons I bring this up,( windows task manger ) in processes, at the bottom, system idle process is using 90-97 cpu. is that normal? My regular cpu usage is 4-7, after I got booted. I also have 42 processes going at the same time, and the idle system is the only one showing cpu usage..........I hope I explained this well enough for anyone to understand.

So....if you're online but not doing anything that is interacting with your connection, you lose it .... if you are continually interacting or transferring data, you're fine .....?

Try this ....

Step 1: Do not connect to the Internet before changing settings.

Click "Start, Programs, Connect To", and then "Show all connections". The Network Connections window will open. If you do not have "Connect To" on your menu you can locate "Network Connections" by clicking "Control Panel" on the Start Menu.

Internet Connection Settings Start Menu

Step 2: The Network Connections window displays the information about your dial-up accounts and any network connections your computer might be able to make.

In this window under "Dial-up" you will see your Internet connection. It will be labeled with the name it was given when it was created. It will probably not be labeled "Internet Connection".

Internet Connection Settings Network Connections

Step 3: Right-click on the Internet Connection icon. In the drop-down menu left-click on "Properties". The "Internet Connection Properties" window will open.

Internet Connection Settings Dropdown

Step 4: Click on the "Options" tab. Check the "Idle time before hanging up" drop-down menu. If anything other than "never" is in this box, select "never" from the menu. Click "OK" to close this window.

I have been logging on and not allowing yahoo messenger to open before I open firefox, and so far things are working much better. Perhaps that was my problem the whole time, I thought I tried everything, and maybe it took everything I have done so far to help narrow it down, either way thanks for all your help.

Any type of activity over the internet should reset your idle time. You should be able to do a google search to find a small program which will keep your connection alive.

But again, you don't need anything special. You can run an email program in the background (like Outlook or Outlook Express) & have it check your mail every 5 minutes (2 minutes, whatever). The possibilities are infiniate.

Here's a couple right here...

KeepRAS 1.0.6

Stay Alive 2000

Or keep a tab with this URL open http://www.sector101.fsnet.co.uk/keepalive/

I'm sure there are many, many more options
