I have been trying to find a way to convert .flv format videos to .avi viedos using some freeware. I am not sure I have a correct solution so I was wondering if anyone here has done that before and what you used to do that with. I have a modified firefox plugin that allows you to download any .flv file from the internet to your computer. But they can only be played with an flv player which is not recognized by windows or other media manipulation tools. So if you want to do anything with flv downloads beside post them right back on the web you have to convert them to a mainstream type of format. Perhaps there is a better way than this, any suggestions?

I got a lot of hits with a Yahoo search (hardly use google), some shareware and a few freeware.
You may find help at this site
http://www.doom9.org/
I did a search for flv but it was a no go. This does not mean users in the forum can not help you.
If no luck with links or doom9 then give me a yell, will dig up some sites I used when into video encoding/decoding.

I found a converter that is free to use. Unfortunately it puts a banner into the video stating that it is a free version of that software. It works just fine but if you don't pay for the upgrade then you are stuck with this banner in the vid. Oh well at least I found a way to make the conversion. Thanks for the help ya'll.

Well I'll give that a shot when I get some time. It looks really good from the reviews and the disclaimer at the eRightSoft site. How did you find this little gem? Thanks WF this is absolutely great. Have a good weekend.

For those with older computers like me, the minimum system requirements for Super © are:
Windows 98SE, ME, 2000, XP, 2003 or Vista. At least 1800MHz Intel Pentium 4 processor or equivalent (64-bit CPU support NOT guaranteed). 512MB of RAM or more. 20GB of free space (or more) on the hard disk where the OS is installed. 1024 x 768 video resolution or larger. 32,000 color video or more. IE 5.01 or later. Internet connection.
Super © is a 25.6MB download.

It was a by product when searching for ‘convert flv to avi’
Yes Super does look good, I might try it with some large avi files, convert them to mpeg then burn to DVD.
Oh that site is great, I used to read the forums, software reviews and how to guides all the time when into video transcoding.

I got a lot of hits with a Yahoo search (hardly use google). . . Curious. Why do you prefer Yahoo over Google?

Because I get too many junk hits with Google, seems I get better results when I use Yahoo. Once in a while I will use Google or some other search engine if I am not satisfied with my search.

Waterfire I wanted to thank you for directing me to that software. I used it last night for the first time and it is really really good, high quality stuff. There are so many choices, it really covers all the bases. And you can go from any format you like to any other and back again. The controls are simple but it takes a few minutes to figure it out only because there are so many options. Anyway it is much better than swf tool box was and you have to pay for that. It is hard to believe that Super is free.
Thanks again for a great tip.

Anytime Seal.
Yes it is powerful and like you said it does take a bit getting used to because of the number of options. Videohelp.com is a great place to go if you have any questions about encoding or decoding.
