By new I assume you mean 7.0? Firefox is a good alternative. And if you want to use 6.0 all you have to do is remove 7.0 and it will default you back to 6.0.

Yes Bev, on XP, IE 7.0 kept hanging, or would crash. I took it off at add/remove programs and went back to 6.0 and ran the updates for security.
I use Firefox as well and I like it... has spell check, tabs like IE 7.0 and many other add ons available... open source. I don't know much about Opera, other than it works fine.

I like the IE browser. It's compatable with everything. But I'm afraid to upgrade to 7.0. I wish there were more people posting about how it works for them.
There are new features on Gmail that I'd like to try, but I need 7.0.

Just download Firefox, or Opera. Both are free.
You can even get Safari for Windows, free as well.

Yeah, IE 7 sux at times. Hangs up, then crashes all your other windows when it does close. You lose your toolbar for no explainable reason. I do like the tabs tho and firefox is so much slower. I could never get the whole page to open in dialup.

What do you get?
The only web browser you all should be using.
Opera!
By the way, Opera was the first browser with a tabbed interface. They are the leader of the pack. The others are just copycats.

Oh, I am not so sure I want to download something new. Then find out it is incompatible with other programs I am using. Like Norton. I have never heard of Opera.

IE7
Memory Hog, leaks memory when Multiple Tabs are open im lucky to open 7 at a time before it crashes and if you try to do normal pc things while multiple tabs are open The pc lags almost seems to freeze sometimes
Improperly render's some web images and Scripts
When Playing back more than one divx file always freezes and crashes
When trying to render anything above flash 7 , usually has lapses can freeze or crash
A few Pluses
Supports tab something we have had For a Long time in the Browsers below
Opera http://www.opera.com/
Maxthon http://www.maxthon.com/
And Firefox http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/
IE7 They have a New Anti-Phishing tool to help prevent sites from Phishing you
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phishing
Phishing is an attempt to criminally and fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as usernames, passwords and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. eBay, PayPal and online banks are common targets. Phishing is typically carried out by email or instant messaging,[1] and often directs users to enter details at a website, although phone contact has also been used.[2] Phishing is an example of social engineering techniques used to fool users.[3] Attempts to deal with the growing number of reported phishing incidents include legislation, user training, public awareness, and technical measures.
There new built in pop up Blocker works very well But tends to block more than you want Block , but that ends up being a trade off
Better to be safe than sorry
They have a Better Parental Controls for Parents
http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/03/01/541701.aspx
They support RSS feeds
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS_(file_format)
RSS (formally "RDF Site Summary", known colloquially as "Really Simple Syndication") is a family of Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines or podcasts. An RSS document, which is called a "feed", "web feed", or "channel", contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with their favorite web sites in an automated manner that's easier than checking them manually.
Other than that I would stick with IE 6.1 Unless you have Vista your stuck with IE7 which surprisenly runs pretty smoothe and stable just not on xp
Personally my new Favorite Browser is Safari by Mac for Windows
It has the cleanest Interface Supports tabs, Shows Pictures so vivid and almost lifelike
Ive found it to be stable and I'm able to open up to 34 tabs before it crashes , I can run multiple videos at once including divx
It has a very fast rendering engine, supports RSS
uses new security features, has advance settings for javascript and
a really good pop u blocker that you can customize
http://www.apple.com/safari/
Hope this Helps

The only problem I have with IE7 is Page not Found. I have to go back and try again. Then it finds it. It didn't take long to figure out that the google toolbar was a waste and how to get the buttons straightened out. I can only get dialup service here, so will a hard modem work any better than a winmodem? I get connected at 26.4 and 28.8 speeds only. I hate to spend the money and then find out that it was a waste.

I have found that certain modem chip sets work better with certain ISP servers than others. Sometimes you can call your ISP and ask them, although many times the people that answer the phones dont know. For instance when using my earthlink dial up, if i use a 56 K or V 90 modem with a intel chipset I get about 28 K rate, but if i use a 56K or V 90 modem with the motorola chip set I get between a 48 to 50 K rate. You really need to find out which chip set optimises the speed of your ISP and sometimes it just takes experimentation by trying several.
Also for additional speed, the only web accelorater that seems to work is Proxyconn, but it cost $3.99 per month for a year prepayed service or $5.95 a month by the month, it makes surfing much faster on a dial up.
Good luck

For me with dial up Internet Explorer seems faster but less stable than Firefox. On Internet Explorer 7.0 I've been getting the dreaded page not found previously mentioned.

Seems to me those so called web accelerators only use up memory and don't do anything. I even had several techs at my servers warn me off them when I was on dialup.
